Due to the high volatility in the field of information technology (IT) and the rapid technological advancements, all IT professionals constantly have to be able to evaluate trends and put them into context. This is especially true for those who fulfill the role of a company’s chief information officer (CIO). But if there is a gap between the required set of skills and those needed, training becomes necessary. In order to plan training programs, one has to know the skill set of current CIOs. This paper conceptualizes a hybrid package of products and services which ensures the energy efficient planning, realization and operation of IT infrastructure. It follows the well-established procedure model of product-service systems engineering and pursues a qualitative research approach that is based on two industry workshops with more than 60 participants from science and practice and on semi-structured interviews with 8 experts. Based on the findings from the interviews and the workshops, customer requirements to the hybrid package are described, a product model is developed and evaluated. Sustainable Enterprise Engineering: Mit Informationssystemen zur nachhaltigen Unternehmensgestaltung

In einer zunehmend komplexen und dynamischen Welt sind Unternehmen mit zahlreichen Herausforderungen konfrontiert: Permanenter technologischer Fortschritt, verschärfter globaler Wettbewerb bei simultan knapper werdenden Ressourcen. Neben der Gewinnung von Rohstoffen und Energieträgern sind auch die Beschaffung von Information und geeigneten Personen (Stichwort demographischer Wandel) zunehmend heraufordernd. Gleichzeitig wird von Unternehmen die Übernahme von gesellschaftlicher und ökologischer Verantwortung verstärkt eingefordert. Diese Entwicklungen sorgen in ihrer Gänze dafür, dass Unternehmen Nachhaltigkeit nicht mehr als „grünen“ Zusatz, sondern als strategische Notwendigkeit begreifen. Nachhaltigkeit zielt als integratives Gesamtkonzept auf die sogenannte Triple-Bottom-Line aus interdependenter ökonomischer, ökologischer und sozialer Nachhaltigkeit, so dass die Beschäftigung mit dem Themengebiet eine besondere Komplexität aufweist. Gleichzeitig erlaubt die Durchdringung sämtlicher Lebens- und Wirtschaftsbereiche mit Informationstechnik und Informationstechnologie (IT) die Nutzung von IT als Enabler für die Erreichung von Nachhaltigkeit. Da für IT aber auch Ressourcen genutzt werden, muss auch die IT selbst Gegenstand von Nachhaltigkeitsbemühungen sein. In der vorliegenden Schrift wird dies adressiert, indem untersucht wird wie nachhaltige IT genutzt werden kann, um Unternehmen nachhaltiger zu gestalten. Dabei wird unter dem Begriff Nachhaltige IT sowohl IT als Enabler für wie auch als Gegenstand von Nachhaltigkeitsbemühungen inkludiert. In einem ersten Schritt wird der Status Quo in Forschung und Praxis der Wirtschaftsinformatik untersucht. Darauf aufbauend werden konkrete Artefakte konstruiert und diskutiert, bevor schließlich die Fragestellung untersucht wird, wie nachhaltige IT auf der Ebene der (IT-)Führung, insbesondere durch Weiterbildung und IT-Governance, verankert werden kann

Sustainability in Business Process Management Research – a Literature Review

Sustainability and business process management (BPM) are both on today’s IS research agenda. BPM on the one hand is even seen as one of the core aspects of the discipline. Sustainability on the other hand is a practical problem for business managers around the globe. In this paper we investigate if and how aspects of this trend towards more sustainable enterprises have been adopted and incorporated into current BPM research. We do so in form of a structured literature review. This liter-ature review should help to discuss if today’s BPM research provides the right tools and methods to green the underlying business activities or if it is rather embracing sustainability only on a descriptive/argumentative level without true incorpora-tion into its methodological foundations. Based on the literature review the paper closes with some ideas for a future research agenda at the intersection of BPM and sustainability

Vorgehensmodelle systematisch vergleichen - Konzeption und Implementierung eines webbasierten Werkzeugs

Vorgehensmodelle haben im Software Engineering eine lange Tradition. Durch die diesen Modellen innewohnende Abstraktionsleistung können komplexe Zu-sammenhänge der Organisations- und Informationssystemgestaltung unter-suchbar sowie verständlich und gestaltbar gemacht werden. Eine große Zahl unterschiedlicher Vorgehensmodelle beansprucht dabei Referenzcharakter für die Lösung bestimmter Problemstellungen oder für einen definierten Adressatenkreis. Für eine sinnvolle Gegenüberstellung der vorhandenen Menge an Modellen fehlt es bislang an einer spezialisierten Werkzeugunterstützung, stattdessen wird häufig auf Excel oder andere tabellarische Datenerfassungen gesetzt. In diesem Beitrag wird aus existierenden Vergleichsarbeiten ein Anforderungskatalog für eine dedizierte Werkzeugunterstützung abgeleitet. Zur Erfüllung dieser Anforderungen wird ein webbasiertes Werkzeug konzipiert und implementiert. In der abschließenden Evaluation wird die Auswahl von Vorgehensmodellen mit Unterstützung des Werkzeugs beispielhaft angewendet

Sustainability as a Topic of IS Research: Reviewing a Decade of Literature

Sustainability becomes more and more important for business and research alike. Whilst the trend might be in full swing, we would like to reflect on the published research results in the IS field’s top research outlets. We do so in form of a structured literature review on the AIS Senior Scholar’s Basket of Six (B6) plus the primarily German-language journal Wirtschaftsinformatik (WI). We chose those 7 outlets to reflect on the different research streams and traditions within the global IS discipline as well. In this paper we present the first results from our analysis and outline some preliminary implications

Nachhaltige IT in Unternehmen: Eine Exploration des Status Quo im Mittelstand

Nachhaltigkeit wird, auch für die IT, immer stärker als wichtig wahrgenommen. Die bereits länger geführte Diskussion unter Schlagworten wie Green IT oder Green IS, deutet auf die wissenschaftliche und praktische Relevanz hin. In diesem Arbeitsbericht wird empirisch untersucht, inwiefern diese Diskussion in der unternehmerischen Praxis angelangt ist und umgesetzt wird. Dabei fassen wir unter dem Oberbegriff Nachhaltige IT sowohl Nachhaltigkeit in der als auch durch die IT zusammen. Die Exploration erfolgt mit Hilfe einer strukturierten Befragung. Die befragten Unternehmen des Mittelstands stammen sowohl aus der inhärent mit IT befassten IKT-Branche wie auch aus reinen Anwenderbranchen. Als Ergebnis werden Hindernisse als auch konkrete Maßnahmen zur Umsetzung von nachhaltiger IT ermittelt. Enabling IT Professionals to Cope with Technological Change through Skill-based Coaching

The constant advancement in technology poses unprecedented complexity and challenges to companies. Information technology (IT) is at the forefront of this trend. Skills to assess and embrace modern IT are becoming a major factor for innovation and success. IT professionals have to stay either up to date or fail. All professionals working in the IT field are affected by this trend, from the software engineer implementing a new solution to the head of the IT department (Chief Information Officer, CIO). The purpose of this article is to conceptualize skill-based coaching as a new approach for helping IT professionals cope with today’s challenges. We conduct two in-depth case studies. In the first case, an agile software development project at a food industry company is investigated. In the second case, a structured teaching and coaching program offered by an university is analyzed. The coaching cube is used to compare both cases. Through measuring a significant increase in skills the suitability of the concept is shown. Based on the results of the case studies, skill-based coaching is conceptually described and explained. Results show that skill-based coaching is a feasible approach to empower IT professionals and enable them to work with modern and future technologies
