Fifty years of the CERN Proton Synchrotron : Volume 2

This report sums up in two volumes the first 50 years of operation of the CERN Proton Synchrotron. After an introduction on the genesis of the machine, and a description of its magnet and powering systems, the first volume focuses on some of the many innovations in accelerator physics and instrumentation that it has pioneered, such as transition crossing, RF gymnastics, extractions, phase space tomography, or transverse emittance measurement by wire scanners. The second volume describes the other machines in the PS complex: the proton linear accelerators, the PS Booster, the LEP pre-injector, the heavy-ion linac and accumulator, and the antiproton rings.Comment: 58 pages, published as CERN Yellow Report https://cds.cern.ch/record/1597087?ln=e

LHC Status and Outlook to the HL-LHC

    No full text
The CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is in its final year of Run 2. The 2-year long shutdown (LS2) will start in 2019 during which the LHC injector Upgrade (LIU) project will be deployed, the first step towards the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) that will be fully deployed during the long shutdown 3 (LS3) in 2024 and 2025. This contribution gives an overview of the present status of the LHC and will provide a brief and non-exhaustive outlook on the HL-LHC

Operational challenges and performance of the LHC during Run II

    No full text
The CERN Large Hadron Collider Run II saw an important increase in beam performance through both, improvements in the LHC and an increased beam brightness from the injectors, leading to a peak luminosity that exceeds the LHC design luminosity by more than a factor two. This contribution will give an overview of run 2, the main challenges encountered and it will address the measures applied to deal with and make use of the increased beam brightness. Finally potential areas where further performance improvement can be a realized will be identified
