Palouse Prairie: Ethics Behind the Loss of an Ecosystem
There is an ethical tradeoff between growing high-yield agricultural products and the integrity and goodness of an ecosystem. Why must we protect an ecosystem and prevent extinction of other organisms? One might claim that the human benefit gained from environmental destructions for the purpose of agriculture is more valuable than any life or structure that existed in the ecosystem. In the case of the Palouse Prairie in Eastern Washington, early white settlers in the area valued the monetary gains from agriculture more than any goodness of an intact ecosystem. Unlike the benefits gained from farming (which could be attained through more sustainable means), what is lost with the destruction of an ecosystem or the extinction of a species can never be restored. I will argue that humans are morally obligated to not destroy living lineages when altering a landscape. A brief case study of the Palouse Prairie will illustrate that the small-scale, land-altering decisions made by the few farmers of the Palouse have caused long-term harms for the current and future inhabitants of the ecosystem, and that humans ought to make reparations for those harms. Because evolution grants the potential for any lineage to advance and better its individuals, the processes of evolution must be respected in any ecosystem. Any lineage’s process of perpetuation must be morally considerable, as is any living organism’s will to live. To offer a practical guideline for land alteration, I conclude with the suggestion that all lineages of life receive freedom of environment, perpetuity, and adaptation
The costs and potential savings of a novel telepaediatric service in Queensland
BACKGROUND: There are few cost-minimisation studies in telemedicine. We have compared the actual costs of providing a telepaediatric service to the potential costs if patients had travelled to see the specialist in person. METHODS: In November 2000, we established a novel telepaediatric service for selected regional hospitals in Queensland. Instead of transferring patients to Brisbane, the majority of referrals to specialists in Brisbane were dealt with via videoconference. Since the service began, 1499 consultations have been conducted for a broad range of paediatric sub-specialities including burns, cardiology, child development, dermatology, diabetes, endocrinology, gastroenterology, nephrology, neurology, oncology, orthopaedics, paediatric surgery and psychiatry. RESULTS: During a five year period, the total cost of providing 1499 consultations through the telepaediatric service was A1,553,264; thus, telepaediatric services resulted in a net saving of approximately A$600,000 to the health service provider. CONCLUSION: Telepaediatrics was a cheaper method for the delivery of outpatient services when the workload exceeded 774 consultations. A sensitivity analysis showed that the threshold point was most sensitive to changes related to patient travel costs, coordinator salaries and videoconference equipment costs. The study showed substantial savings for the health department, mainly due to reduced costs associated with patient travel
Low energy antideuterons: shedding light on dark matter
Low energy antideuterons suffer a very low secondary and tertiary
astrophysical background, while they can be abundantly synthesized in dark
matter pair annihilations, therefore providing a privileged indirect dark
matter detection technique. The recent publication of the first upper limit on
the low energy antideuteron flux by the BESS collaboration, a new evaluation of
the standard astrophysical background, and remarkable progresses in the
development of a dedicated experiment, GAPS, motivate a new and accurate
analysis of the antideuteron flux expected in particle dark matter models. To
this extent, we consider here supersymmetric, universal extra-dimensions (UED)
Kaluza-Klein and warped extra-dimensional dark matter models, and assess both
the prospects for antideuteron detection as well as the various related sources
of uncertainties. The GAPS experiment, even in a preliminary balloon-borne
setup, will explore many supersymmetric configurations, and, eventually, in its
final space-borne configuration, will be sensitive to primary antideuterons
over the whole cosmologically allowed UED parameter space, providing a search
technique which is highly complementary with other direct and indirect dark

[CII] 158 micron Luminosities and Star Formation Rate in Dusty Starbursts and AGN
Results are presented for [CII] 158 micron line fluxes observed with the
Herschel PACS instrument in 112 sources with both starburst and AGN
classifications, of which 102 sources have confident detections. Results are
compared with mid-infrared spectra from the Spitzer Infrared Spectrometer and
with L(IR) from IRAS fluxes; AGN/starburst classifications are determined from
equivalent width of the 6.2 micron PAH feature. It is found that the [CII] line
flux correlates closely with the flux of the 11.3 micron PAH feature
independent of AGN/starburst classification, log [f([CII] 158 micron)/f(11.3
micron PAH)] = -0.22 +- 0.25. It is concluded that [CII] line flux measures the
photodissociation region associated with starbursts in the same fashion as the
PAH feature. A calibration of star formation rate for the starburst component
in any source having [CII] is derived comparing [CII] luminosity L([CII]) to
L(IR) with the result that log SFR = log L([CII)]) - 7.08 +- 0.3, for SFR in
solar masses per year and L([CII]) in solar luminosities. The decreasing ratio
of L([CII]) to L(IR) in more luminous sources (the "[CII] deficit") is shown to
be a consequence of the dominant contribution to L(IR) arising from a luminous
AGN component because the sources with largest L(IR) and smallest
L([CII])/L(IR) are AGN.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa
SN 2010jl: Optical to Hard X-ray Observations Reveal an Explosion Embedded In a Ten Solar Mass Cocoon
Some supernovae (SNe) may be powered by the interaction of the SN ejecta with a large amount of circumstellar matter (CSM). However, quantitative estimates of the CSM mass around such SNe are missing when the CSM material is optically thick. Specifically, current estimators are sensitive to uncertainties regarding the CSM density profile and the ejecta velocity. Here we outline a method to measure the mass of the optically thick CSM around such SNe. We present new visible-light and X-ray observations of SN 2010jl (PTF 10aaxf), including the first detection of an SN in the hard X-ray band using NuSTAR. The total radiated luminosity of SN 2010jl is extreme—at least 9 × 1050 erg. By modeling the visible-light data, we robustly show that the mass of the circumstellar material within ~1016 cm of the progenitor of SN 2010jl was in excess of 10 M☉. This mass was likely ejected tens of years prior to the SN explosion. Our modeling suggests that the shock velocity during shock breakout was ~6000 km s–1, decelerating to ~2600 km s–1 about 2 yr after maximum light. Furthermore, our late-time NuSTAR and XMM spectra of the SN presumably provide the first direct measurement of SN shock velocity 2 yr after the SN maximum light—measured to be in the range of 2000-4500 km s–1 if the ions and electrons are in equilibrium, and ≳2000 km s–1 if they are not in equilibrium. This measurement is in agreement with the shock velocity predicted by our modeling of the visible-light data. Our observations also show that the average radial density distribution of the CSM roughly follows an r–2 law. A possible explanation for the ≳10 M☉ of CSM and the wind-like profile is that they are the result of multiple pulsational pair instability events prior to the SN explosion, separated from each other by years
A Large Area Detector proposed for the Large Observatory for X-ray Timing (LOFT)
The Large Observatory for X-ray Timing (LOFT) is one of the four candidate
ESA M3 missions considered for launch in the 2022 time-frame. It is
specifically designed to perform fast X-ray timing and probe the status of the
matter near black holes and neutron stars. The LOFT scientific payload is
composed of a Large Area Detector (LAD) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM). The LAD
is a 10 m2-class pointed instrument with 20 times the collecting area of the
best past timing missions (such as RXTE) over the 2-30 keV range, which holds
the capability to revolutionize studies of X-ray variability down to the
millisecond time scales. Its ground-breaking characteristic is a low mass per
unit surface, enabling an effective area of ~10 m^2 (@10 keV) at a reasonable
weight. The development of such large but light experiment, with low mass and
power per unit area, is now made possible by the recent advancements in the
field of large-area silicon detectors - able to time tag an X-ray photon with
an accuracy <10 {\mu}s and an energy resolution of ~260 eV at 6 keV - and
capillary-plate X-ray collimators. In this paper, we will summarize the

ATG5 is essential for ATG8-dependent autophagy and mitochondrial homeostasis in Leishmania major
Macroautophagy has been shown to be important for the cellular remodelling required for Leishmania differentiation. We now demonstrate that L. major contains a functional ATG12-ATG5 conjugation system, which is required for ATG8-dependent autophagosome formation. Nascent autophagosomes were found commonly associated with the mitochondrion. L. major mutants lacking ATG5 (Δatg5) were viable as promastigotes but were unable to form autophagosomes, had morphological abnormalities including a much reduced flagellum, were less able to differentiate and had greatly reduced virulence to macrophages and mice. Analyses of the lipid metabolome of Δatg5 revealed marked elevation of phosphatidylethanolamines (PE) in comparison to wild type parasites. The Δatg5 mutants also had increased mitochondrial mass but reduced mitochondrial membrane potential and higher levels of reactive oxygen species. These findings indicate that the lack of ATG5 and autophagy leads to perturbation of the phospholipid balance in the mitochondrion, possibly through ablation of membrane use and conjugation of mitochondrial PE to ATG8 for autophagosome biogenesis, resulting in a dysfunctional mitochondrion with impaired oxidative ability and energy generation. SHINING, A Survey of Far-infrared Lines in Nearby Galaxies. I. Survey Description, Observational Trends, and Line Diagnostics
We use the Herschel/PACS spectrometer to study the global and spatially resolved far-infrared (FIR) fine-structure line emission in a sample of 52 galaxies that constitute the SHINING survey. These galaxies include star-forming, active-galactic nuclei (AGN), and luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). We find an increasing number of galaxies (and kiloparsec size regions within galaxies) with low line-to-FIR continuum ratios as a function of increasing FIR luminosity (), dust infrared color, to molecular gas mass ratio (), and FIR surface brightness (). The correlations between the [CII]/FIR or [OI]/FIR ratios with are remarkably tight ( dex scatter over almost four orders of magnitude in ). We observe that galaxies with and kpc tend to have weak fine-structure line-to-FIR continuum ratios, and that LIRGs with infrared sizes kpc have line-to-FIR ratios comparable to those observed in typical star-forming galaxies. We analyze the physical mechanisms driving these trends in Paper II (Herrera-Camus et al. 2018). The combined analysis of the [CII], [NII], and [OIII] lines reveals that the fraction of the [CII] line emission that arises from neutral gas increases from 60% to 90% in the most active star-forming regions and that the emission originating in the ionized gas is associated with low-ionization, diffuse gas rather than with dense gas in HII regions. Finally, we report the global and spatially resolved line fluxes of the SHINING galaxies to enable the comparison and planning of future local and high- studies
