    No Far-Infrared-Spectroscopic Gap in Clean and Dirty High-TC_C Superconductors

    We report far infrared transmission measurements on single crystal samples derived from Bi2_{2}Sr2_{2}CaCu2_{2}O8_{8}. The impurity scattering rate of the samples was varied by electron-beam irradiation, 50MeV 16^{16}O+6^{+6} ion irradiation, heat treatment in vacuum, and Y doping. Although substantial changes in the infrared spectra were produced, in no case was a feature observed that could be associated with the superconducting energy gap. These results all but rule out ``clean limit'' explanations for the absence of the spectroscopic gap in this material, and provide evidence that the superconductivity in Bi2_{2}Sr2_{2}CaCu2_{2}O8_{8} is gapless.Comment: 4 pages and 3 postscript figures attached.     Raman scattering in a two-dimensional electron gas: Boltzmann equation approach

    The inelastic light scattering in a 2-d electron gas is studied theoretically using the Boltzmann equation techniques. Electron-hole excitations produce the Raman spectrum essentially different from the one predicted for the 3-d case. In the clean limit it has the form of a strong non-symmetric resonance due to the square root singularity at the electron-hole frequency ω=vk\omega = vk while in the opposite dirty limit the usual Lorentzian shape of the cross section is reestablished. The effects of electromagnetic field are considered self-consistently and the contribution from collective plasmon modes is found. It is shown that unlike 3-d metals where plasmon excitations are unobservable (because of very large required transfered frequencies), the two-dimensional electron system gives rise to a low-frequency (ωk1/2\omega \propto k^{1/2}) plasmon peak.     The incorporation of14C‐glycerol into different species of diglycerides and triglycerides in rat liver slices

    The relative rates of de novo synthesis of species of diglycerides and triglycerides from14C‐glycerol were examined in rat liver slices. Diglycerides containing one or two double bonds per molecule and triglycerides containing four or more double bonds per molecule represented 70% and 60% respectively of the newly synthesized diglycerides and triglycerides. The newly synthesized triglycerides were more unsaturated than the endogenous triglycerides. Our results suggest that a nonrandom synthesis of species of diglycerides occurred followed by an almost random utilization of the various diglyceride species for the biosynthesis of triglycerides.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/142207/1/lipd0411.pd

    Doping dependence of the superconducting gap in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O{8 + delta}

    Bi2Sr2CaCu2O{8 + \delta} crystals with varying hole concentrations (0.12 < p < 0.23) were studied to investigate the effects of doping on the symmetry and magnitude of the superconducting gap. Electronic Raman scattering experiments that sample regions of the Fermi surface near the diagonal (B_{2g}) and principal axes (B_{1g}) of the Brillouin Zone have been utilized. The frequency dependence of the Raman response function at low energies is found to be linear for B_{2g} and cubic for B_{1g} (T< T_c). The latter observations have led us to conclude that the doping dependence of the superconducting gap is consistent with d_{x^2-y^2} symmetry, for slightly underdoped and overdoped crystals. Studies of the pair-breaking peak found in the B_{1g} spectra demonstrate that the magnitude of the maximum gap decreases monotonically with increasing hole doping, for p > 0.12. Based on the magnitude of the B_{1g} renormalization, it is found that the number of quasiparticles participating in pairing increases monotonically with increased doping. On the other hand, the B_{2g} spectra show a weak "pair-breaking peak" that follows a parabolic-like dependence on hole concentration, for 0.12 < p < 0.23.Comment: 9 pages REvTex document including 8 eps figures; new table II; changes to Fig. 5 and tex

    Carrier relaxation, pseudogap, and superconducting gap in high-Tc cuprates: A Raman scattering study

    We describe results of electronic Raman-scattering experiments in differently doped single crystals of Y-123 and Bi-2212. The comparison of AF insulating and metallic samples suggests that at least the low-energy part of the spectra originates predominantly from excitations of free carriers. We therefore propose an analysis of the data in terms of a memory function approach. Dynamical scattering rates and mass-enhancement factors for the carriers are obtained. In B2g symmetry the Raman data compare well to the results obtained from ordinary and optical transport. For underdoped materials the dc scattering rates in B1g symmetry become temperature independent and considerably larger than in B2g symmetry. This increasing anisotropy is accompanied by a loss of spectral weight in B2g symmetry in the range between the superconducting transition at Tc and a characteristic temperature T* of order room temperature which compares well with the pseudogap temperature found in other experiments. The energy range affected by the pseudogap is doping and temperature independent. The integrated spectral loss is approximately 25% in underdoped samples and becomes much weaker towards higher carrier concentration. In underdoped samples, superconductivity related features in the spectra can be observed only in B2g symmetry. The peak frequencies scale with Tc. We do not find a direct relation between the pseudogap and the superconducting gap.Comment: RevTeX, 21 pages, 24 gif figures.     Use of the internet by Italian pediatricians: habits, impact on clinical practice and expectations

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Medical professionals go online for literature searches and communication with families.</p> <p>We administered a questionnaire to members of the Italian Society of Pediatrics to assess determinants of their use of the Internet, of social platforms and of personal health records during clinical practice.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>All the 9180 members of the Italian Society of Pediatrics were invited to fill in a questionnaire concerning use of the Internet and usefulness of Internet-based tools during clinical practice. The questionnaire was administered through the SurveyMonkey<sup>® </sup>web platform. Logistic regression analysis was used to study factors affecting use and influence of the Internet in clinical practice.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 1335 (14.5%) members returned the questionnaire. Mean age was 49.2 years, 58.6% were female. 32.3% had access to the Internet through a Smartphone. 71.9% of respondents used the Internet during clinical practice, mainly searching for guidelines and drug references. Use of the Internet during clinical practice was more frequent among younger pediatricians (OR 0.964; 95% CI 0.591-0.978), males (OR 1.602; 95% CI 1.209-2.123) and those living in Northern and Central Italy (OR 1.441; 95% CI 1.111-1.869), while it was lower among family pediatricians. 94.6% of respondents were influenced in their clinical practice by information found on the Internet, in particular younger pediatricians (OR 0.96, 95% CI 0.932-0.989), hospital pediatricians (OR 2.929, 95% CI 1.708-5.024), and other pediatric profiles (OR 6.143, 95%CI 1.848-20.423). 15.9% of respondents stated that social networks may be useful in pediatric practice. Slightly more than half (50.5%) of respondents stated that personal health records may be clinically relevant. Registrars and hospital pediatricians were more likely to perceive personal health records as useful tools for clinical practice. Additional resources pediatricians would like to access were free bibliographic databases and tools for interacting with families.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Italian pediatricians frequently use the Internet during their practice. One-third of them access the Internet through a Smartphone. Interaction with families and their empowerment can be improved by the use of Internet tools, including personal health records, toward which respondents show a significant interest. Though, they show a general resistance to the introduction of social networks in clinical practice.</p
