    Utilizing online serious games to facilitate distributed requirements elicitation

    Requirements elicitation is one of the most important and challenging activities in software development projects. A variety of challenges related to requirements elicitation are reported in the literature, of which the lack of proper communication and knowledge transfer between software stakeholders are among the most important. Communication and knowledge transfer are becoming even bigger challenges with the current increase in globally distributed software development projects due to the temporal, geographic, and sociocultural diversity among software stakeholders. In this study, we propose a new approach to requirements elicitation, which employs online serious games for gathering requirements from distributed software stakeholders. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach were evaluated in an empirical study with encouraging results. These results especially reveal that our suggested approach enables less-experienced individuals to identify a higher number of requirements. Our results also reveal that for the majority of subjects, especially individuals with less technical experience, this approach was a pleasant and easy way of participating in requirements elicitation. Based on these results we suggest that using online serious games not only enhances innovation and creativity among end-users but also facilitates collaboration and communication among software stakeholders.     Service Design is a comprehensive and collaborative design approach for creating value for all stakeholders. Service Design includes several methods and tools for the improvement of a new or an existing service. The implementation of Service Design into software development has been only partially studied. Likewise, research regarding the benefits and challenges concerning the utilization of Service Design precisely in software development is rather deficient. The aim of this study was to experiment applying Service Design methods and tools into software development through a pilot project carried out in a Finnish software development company. This research presents possible benefits and challenges that implementing Service Design into software development may have. In addition, critical factors to be considered while implementing Service Design are proposed.</p

    ACTIVE INNOVATION — CASE STUDY IN SMART EXERCISE ENVIRONMENTS: COMPARING TRADITIONAL AND EXPERIMENTAL INNOVATION METHODS

    The purpose of this paper is to improve the existing methods of building new product concepts in a qualitative "two-case" case study with action research approach combined with method comparison. Companies need an effective method to create radical product concepts and product visions. The commonly used focus group method is too simplistic for achieving deep understanding about the user needs. Innovation competitions are seen as a solution to the following major industry challenges: ineffectiveness of traditional market research, structural innovation gap, closed innovation paradigm, and the low amount, low quality and low variance of innovation opportunities. A new design for next generation innovation competition, the "InnoCoop" method, is introduced. InnoCoop produces more holistic product concepts, involves management in participation, is active in terms of working methods, offers more surprise elements, and produces more creative ideas.
