    A concept of water usage efficiency to support water reduction in manufacturing industry

    Increasing pressures on freshwater supplies, continuity of supply uncertainties, and costs linked to legislative compliance, such as for wastewater treatment, are driving water use reduction up the agenda of manufacturing businesses. A survey is presented of current analysis methods and tools generally available to industry to analyze environmental impact of, and to manage, water use. These include life cycle analysis, water footprinting, strategic planning, water auditing, and process integration. It is identified that the methods surveyed do not provide insight into the operational requirements from individual process steps for water, instead taking such requirements as a given. We argue that such understanding is required for a proactive approach to long-term water usage reduction, in which sustainability is taken into account at the design stage for both process and product. As a first step to achieving this, we propose a concept of water usage efficiency which can be used to evaluate current and proposed processes and products. Three measures of efficiency are defined, supported by a framework of a detailed categorization and representation of water flows within a production system. The calculation of the efficiency measures is illustrated using the example of a tomato sauce production line. Finally, the elements required to create a useable tool based on the efficiency measures are discussed

    Prediction of long and short time rheological behavior in soft glassy materials

    We present an effective time approach to predict long and short time rheological behavior of soft glassy materials from experiments carried out over practical time scales. Effective time approach takes advantage of relaxation time dependence on aging time that allows time-aging time superposition even when aging occurs over the experimental timescales. Interestingly experiments on variety of soft materials demonstrate that the effective time approach successfully predicts superposition for diverse aging regimes ranging from sub-aging to hyper-aging behaviors. This approach can also be used to predict behavior of any response function in molecular as well as spin glasses.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

    AdS/CFT correspondence via R-current correlation functions revisited

    Motivated by realizing open/closed string duality in the work by Gopakumar [Phys. Rev. D70:025009,2004], we study two and three-point correlation functions of R-current vector fields in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. These correlation functions in free field limit can be derived from the worldline formalism and written as heat kernel integrals in the position space. We show that reparametrizing these integrals converts them to the expected AdS supergravity results which are known in terms of bulk to boundary propagator.     Microstructural and geo-mechanical study on bio-cemented sand for optimization of MICP process

    Limited research has been reported on strength improvement of biocemented soils in relation to crystal patterns of microbially induced calcite (CaCO3) precipitation (MICP). In this study, sand samples were treated under the coeffect of different bacterial culture (BC) and cementation solution (CS) concentrations to evaluate the optimum BC and CS combination that yields the highest soil strength. It was found that for lower CS conditions (0.25 M), higher BC produced stronger samples, whereas for higher CS conditions (0.5 M or 1 M), lower BC was more dominant in improving the soil strength. This can be attributed to the effectively precipitated CaCO3 crystals, which were in rhombohedral shape and large size and were concentrated at the soil pore throat rather than deposited on the individual sand grain surface. This finding was confirmed with the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The strength and permeability of the optimized biocemented samples were also compared with sand samples treated with ordinary portland cement (OPC). The optimized biocemented sand provided higher strength and permeability than those obtained from the samples treated with similar content of OPC at a curing period of 28 days

    Load-settlement modelling of axially loaded drilled shafts using CPT-based recurrent neural networks

    The design of pile foundations requires good estimation of the pile load-carrying capacity and settlement. Design for bearing capacity and design for settlement have been traditionally carried out separately. However, soil resistance and settlement are influenced by each other, and the design of pile foundations should thus consider the bearing capacity and settlement inseparably. This requires the full load–settlement response of piles to be well predicted. However, it is well known that the actual load–settlement response of pile foundations can be obtained only by load tests carried out in situ, which are expensive and time-consuming. In this paper, recurrent neural networks (RNNs) were used to develop a prediction model that can resemble the full load–settlement response of drilled shafts (bored piles) subjected to axial loading. The developed RNN model was calibrated and validated using several in situ full-scale pile load tests, as well as cone penetration test (CPT) data. The results indicate that the developed RNN model has the ability to reliably predict the load–settlement response of axially loaded drilled shafts and can thus be used by geotechnical engineers for routine design practice

    A spatial modeling approach for linguistic object data : analysing dialect sound variations across Great Britain

    Dialect variation is of considerable interest in linguistics and other social sciences. However, traditionally it has been studied using proxies (transcriptions) rather than acoustic recordings directly. We introduce novel statistical techniques to analyze geolocalized speech recordings and to explore the spatial variation of pronunciations continuously over the region of interest, as opposed to traditional isoglosses, which provide a discrete partition of the region. Data of this type require an explicit modeling of the variation in the mean and the covariance. Usual Euclidean metrics are not appropriate, and we therefore introduce the concept of d-covariance, which allows consistent estimation both in space and at individual locations. We then propose spatial smoothing for these objects which accounts for the possibly nonconvex geometry of the domain of interest. We apply the proposed method to data from the spoken part of the British National Corpus, deposited at the British Library, London, and we produce maps of the dialect variation over Great Britain. In addition, the methods allow for acoustic reconstruction across the domain of interest, allowing researchers to listen to the statistical analysis.
