Full-size solar dynamic heat receiver thermal-vacuum tests
The testing of a full-size, 120 kW, solar dynamic heat receiver utilizing high-temperature thermal energy storage is described. The purpose of the test program was to quantify receiver thermodynamic performance, operating temperatures, and thermal response to changes in environmental and power module interface boundary conditions. The heat receiver was tested in a vacuum chamber with liquid nitrogen cold shrouds and an aperture cold plate to partly simulate a low-Earth-orbit environment. The cavity of the receiver was heated by an infrared quartz lamp heater with 30 independently controllable zones to allow axially and circumferentially varied flux distributions. A closed-Brayton cycle engine simulator conditioned a helium-xenon gas mixture to specific interface conditions to simulate the various operational modes of the solar dynamic power module on the Space Station Freedom. Inlet gas temperature, pressure, and flow rate were independently varied. A total of 58 simulated orbital cycles, each 94 minutes in duration, was completed during the test conduct period
Ground test program for a full-size solar dynamic heat receiver
Test hardware, facilities, and procedures were developed to conduct ground testing of a full size, solar dynamic heat receiver in a partially simulated, low Earth orbit environment. The heat receiver was designed to supply 102 kW of thermal energy to a helium and xenon gas mixture continuously over a 94 minute orbit, including up to 36 minutes of eclipse. The purpose of the test program was to quantify the receiver thermodynamic performance, its operating temperatures, and thermal response to changes in environmental and power module interface boundary conditions. The heat receiver was tested in a vacuum chamber using liquid nitrogen cold shrouds and an aperture cold plate. Special test equipment were designed to provide the required ranges in interface boundary conditions that typify those expected or required for operation as part of the solar dynamic power module on the Space Station Freedom. The support hardware includes an infrared quartz lamp heater with 30 independently controllable zones and a closed Brayton cycle engine simulator to circulate and condition the helium xenon gas mixture. Poor school attendance and exclusion: A systematic review protocol on educational risk factors for self-harm and suicidal behaviours

Available from BMJ Publishing Group via the DOI in this record.Introduction Schools have an important role in recognising and preventing self-harm and suicidal behaviour in their students, however little is known about which educational factors are associated with heightened risk We will systematically review the existing evidence on two key educational performance indicators that are routinely collected by school administrative systems: School attendance and exclusion We will investigate their association with self-harm and suicidal behaviour in school-age children and adolescents Knowledge of this association could help inform suicide prevention strategies at clinical, school and population levels Methods and analysis We will conduct a systematic search of Medline, EMBASE, PsycINFO, British Education Index and Education Resources Information Centre (ERIC) from 1 January 1990, and conduct a manual search for additional references We aim to identify studies that explore the association between poor school attendance or exclusion and self-harm or suicidal behaviours in school-age children and adolescents Two independent reviewers will screen titles, abstracts and full-text documents and independently extract relevant data for analysis Study quality will be assessed using a modified Newcastle-Ottawa Scale A descriptive analysis will be performed, and where appropriate, results will be combined in meta-analyses Ethics and dissemination This is a systematic review of published literature, and therefore ethical approval will not be sought We will publish reports in health and education journals, present our work at conferences focused on school mental health and communicate our findings to practitioners and managers in public health, education and child mental health.Wellcome TrustMedical Research Council (MRC)National Institute of Health Research (NIHR
Theory and simulation of gelation, arrest and yielding in attracting colloids
We present some recent theory and simulation results addressing the phenomena
of colloidal gelation at both high and low volume fractions, in the presence of
short-range attractive interactions. We discuss the ability of mode-coupling
theory and its adaptations to address situations with strong heterogeneity in
density and/or dynamics. We include a discussion of the effect of attractions
on the shear-thinning and yield behaviour under flow.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure
Psychopolitics: Peter Sedgwick’s legacy for mental health movements
This paper re-considers the relevance of Peter Sedgwick's Psychopolitics (1982) for a politics of mental health. Psychopolitics offered an indictment of ‘anti-psychiatry’ the failure of which, Sedgwick argued, lay in its deconstruction of the category of ‘mental illness’, a gesture that resulted in a politics of nihilism. ‘The radical who is only a radical nihilist’, Sedgwick observed, ‘is for all practical purposes the most adamant of conservatives’. Sedgwick argued, rather, that the concept of ‘mental illness’ could be a truly critical concept if it was deployed ‘to make demands upon the health service facilities of the society in which we live’. The paper contextualizes Psychopolitics within the ‘crisis tendencies’ of its time, surveying the shifting welfare landscape of the subsequent 25 years alongside Sedgwick's continuing relevance. It considers the dilemma that the discourse of ‘mental illness’ – Sedgwick's critical concept – has fallen out of favour with radical mental health movements yet remains paradigmatic within psychiatry itself. Finally, the paper endorses a contemporary perspective that, while necessarily updating Psychopolitics, remains nonetheless ‘Sedgwickian’
A deep ATCA 20cm radio survey of the AKARI Deep Field South near the South Ecliptic Pole
The results of a deep 20 cm radio survey at 20 cm are reported of the AKARI
Deep Field South (ADF-S) near the South Ecliptic Pole (SEP), using the
Australia Telescope Compact Array telescope, ATCA. The survey has 1 sigma
detection limits ranging from 18.7--50 microJy per beam over an area of ~1.1 sq
degrees, and ~2.5 sq degrees to lower sensitivity. The observations, data
reduction and source count analysis are presented, along with a description of
the overall scientific objectives, and a catalogue containing 530 radio sources
detected with a resolution of 6.2" x 4.9". The derived differential source
counts show a pronounced excess of sources fainter than ~1 mJy, consistent with
an emerging population of star forming galaxies. Cross-correlating the radio
with AKARI sources and archival data we find 95 cross matches, with most
galaxies having optical R-magnitudes in the range 18-24 mag, and 52 components
lying within 1" of a radio position in at least one further catalogue (either
IR or optical). We have reported redshifts for a sub-sample of our catalogue
finding that they vary between galaxies in the local universe to those having
redshifts of up to 0.825. Associating the radio sources with the Spitzer
catalogue at 24 microns, we find 173 matches within one Spitzer pixel, of which
a small sample of the identifications are clearly radio loud compared to the
bulk of the galaxies. The radio luminosity plot and a colour-colour analysis
suggest that the majority of the radio sources are in fact luminous star
forming galaxies, rather than radio-loud AGN. There are additionally five cross
matches between ASTE or BLAST submillimetre galaxies and radio sources from
this survey, two of which are also detected at 90 microns, and 41 cross-matches
with submillimetre sources detected in the Herschel HerMES survey Public Data
