    Ultra-Sensitive Hot-Electron Nanobolometers for Terahertz Astrophysics

    The background-limited spectral imaging of the early Universe requires spaceborne terahertz (THz) detectors with the sensitivity 2-3 orders of magnitude better than that of the state-of-the-art bolometers. To realize this sensitivity without sacrificing operating speed, novel detector designs should combine an ultrasmall heat capacity of a sensor with its unique thermal isolation. Quantum effects in thermal transport at nanoscale put strong limitations on the further improvement of traditional membrane-supported bolometers. Here we demonstrate an innovative approach by developing superconducting hot-electron nanobolometers in which the electrons are cooled only due to a weak electron-phonon interaction. At T<0.1K, the electron-phonon thermal conductance in these nanodevices becomes less than one percent of the quantum of thermal conductance. The hot-electron nanobolometers, sufficiently sensitive for registering single THz photons, are very promising for submillimeter astronomy and other applications based on quantum calorimetry and photon counting.Comment: 19 pages, 3 color figure

    Background Problem Statement: There are subsets of patients with traumatic intracranial hemorrhage who are low-risk for clinically significant hemorrhage expansion and/or neurologic deterioration requiring procedural intervention, yet these patients often undergo multiple serial head CT’s requiring an extended length of stay that may not be necessary. The Brain Injury Guidelines1,2 (BIG) and subsequent modified Brain Injury Guidelines3 (mBIG) sought to categorize these low-risk subsets and provide an algorithm for more efficient care for these patients.     Tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy is one of the most frequently performed surgeries in the United States, with over 500,000 performed annually. Post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage is one of the most feared complications; thus, medications that could increase the risk of postoperative bleeding traditionally have been avoided. With recent FDA guidelines encouraging a departure from codeine-based medications in pediatric patients undergoing tonsillectomy, we examined the use of ibuprofen for post-tonsillectomy pain control. The records of 449 children who underwent tonsillectomy and received ibuprofen for postoperative pain control were reviewed and compared to a cohort of 1731 children who received codeine for pain postoperatively. Outcomes measured included rates of secondary post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage (PTH), secondary PTH requiring operative control, and emergency room evaluation for dehydration. Use of ibuprofen after pediatric intracapsular tonsillectomy was found to be associated with a statistically significant increase in secondary PTH and secondary PTH requiring operative control; however, ibuprofen was found to provide pain control that is at least equivalent to narcotic. Rates of secondary PTH with postoperative ibuprofen use remain within the national average. We propose that, despite the increased risk of bleeding, the use of ibuprofen is appropriate for use postoperatively in pediatric tonsillectomy patients, given its ability to control pain and lack of respiratory depression effects

    Stable isotope analysis (ÎŽ<sup>13</sup>C and ÎŽ<sup>15</sup>N) of soil nematodes from four feeding groups

    Soil nematode feeding groups are a long-established trophic categorisation largely based on morphology and are used in ecological indices to monitor and analyse the biological state of soils. Stable isotope ratio analysis (13C/12C and 15N/14N, expressed as ÎŽ13C and ÎŽ15N) has provided verification of, and novel insights into, the feeding ecology of soil animals such as earthworms and mites. However, isotopic studies of soil nematodes have been limited to date as conventional stable isotope ratio analysis needs impractically large numbers of nematodes (up to 1,000) to achieve required minimum sample weights (typically >100 ”g C and N). Here, micro-sample near-conventional elemental analysis–isotopic ratio mass spectrometry (ÎŒEA–IRMS) of C and N using microgram samples (typically 20 ”g dry weight), was employed to compare the trophic position of selected soil nematode taxa from four feeding groups: predators (Anatonchus and Mononchus), bacterial feeders (Plectus and Rhabditis), omnivores (Aporcelaimidae and Qudsianematidae) and plant feeder (Rotylenchus). Free-living nematodes were collected from conventionally and organically managed arable soils. As few as 15 nematodes, for omnivores and predators, were sufficient to reach the 20 ”g dry weight target. There was no significant difference in ÎŽ15N (p = 0.290) or ÎŽ13C (p = 0.706) between conventional and organic agronomic treatments but, within treatments, there was a significant difference in N and C stable isotope ratios between the plant feeder, Rotylenchus (ÎŽ15N = 1.08 to 3.22 mUr‰, ÎŽ13C = –29.58 to –27.87 mUr) and all other groups. There was an average difference of 9.62 mUr in ÎŽ15N between the plant feeder and the predator group (ÎŽ15N = 9.89 to 12.79 mUr, ÎŽ13C = –27.04 to –25.51 mUr). Isotopic niche widths were calculated as Bayesian derived standard ellipse areas and were smallest for the plant feeder (1.37 mUr2) and the predators (1.73 mUr2), but largest for omnivores (3.83 mUr2). These data may reflect more preferential feeding by the plant feeder and predators, as assumed by classical morphology-based feeding groups, and indicate that omnivory may be more widespread across detritivore groups i.e. bacterial feeders (3.81 mUr2). Trophic information for soil nematodes derived from stable isotope analysis, scaled as finely as species level in some cases, will complement existing indices for soil biological assessment and monitoring, and can potentially be used to identify new trophic interactions in soils.     Green concrete production incorporating waste carpet fiber and palm oil fuel ash

    With the increasing amount of waste generation from various processes, there has been a growing interest in the utilization of waste in producing building materials to achieve potential benefits. This paper highlights the results of an experimental investigation on the performance of concrete incorporating waste carpet fiber (WCF) and palm oil fuel ash (POFA) as partial replacements of ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Six volume fractions varying from 0 to 1.25% of 20-mm-long carpet fiber were used with OPC concrete mixes. Another six mixes were made that replaced OPC with 20% POFA. The specimens were cured in water and tested for fresh and hardened state properties. The combination of WCF and POFA decreased the slump values and increased the VeBe time of fresh concrete. The addition of WCF to either OPC or POFA concrete mixes did not improve the compressive strength or modulus of elasticity. At 91 days, the compressive strength was in the range of 38.1e49.1 MPa. The positive interaction between WCF and POFA, however, leads to high tensile and flexural strengths, thereby increasing the concrete ductility with higher energy absorption and improved crack distribution. The maximum increases in tensile and flexural strengths compared to those of plain concrete were achieved by the addition of 0.5% carpet fiber at the age of 91 days. The ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) was examined and was classified as good quality concrete. The study showed that the use of waste carpet fiber and palm oil fuel ash in the production of sustainable green concrete is feasible both technically and environmentally

    Mathematically gifted and talented learners: Theory and practice

This article reviews policy developments and current research and theory on giftedness in mathematics. It includes a discussion of the nature of mathematical ability as well as the factors that make up giftedness in mathematics. The article is set in the context of current developments in Mathematics Education and Gifted Education in the UK and their implications for Science and Technology. It argues that early identification and appropriate provision for younger mathematically promising pupils capitalizes on an intellectual resource which could provide future mathematicans as well as specialists in Science or Technology. Drawing on a Vygotskian framework, it is suggested that the mathematically gifted require appropriate cognitive challenges as well as attitudinally and motivationally enhancing experiences. In the second half of this article we report on an initiative in which we worked with teachers to identify mathematically gifted pupils and to provide effective enrichment support for them, in a number of London Local Authorities. A number of significant issues are raised relating to the identification of mathematical talent, enrichment provision for students and teachers’ professional development

    Ultrasonic Nondestructive Evaluation Using Laser Transducers

    A program is described which employs lasers for ultrasonic NDE. A high-power laser is used to generate a brief sound pulse in the test specimen. A second low-power laser then measures the response of the specimen to that sound pulse. The response of the specimen is measured by a “Laser Vibrometer.” This is a novel type of heterodyne interferometer which focuses a Helium-Neon laser beam onto the surface of the specimen and measures its displacement. Displacements as small as 2×10-12 meters on a 0.15 sec averaging time can be detected and also displacements of 1.5×l0-9 meters on a 10-MHz bandwidth. The Laser Vibrometer has a well defined frequency response and does not introduce distortion. The sound generating laser is either a pulsed carbon dioxide TEA laser or a YAG laser. The peak power exceeds 10 M watt. Two mechanisms for generating the sound are discussed. The thermoelastic mechanism relies on the thermal expansion of the surface, causing it to move. The reaction to this causes a pressure pulse in the specimen. Another mechanism allows a small amount of the surface to be ablated and the reaction to this causes a substantial pressure pulse in the specimen. Both laser beams can be scanned over the surface of the specimen by a microprocessor controlled mirror. The microprocessor generates a raster scan of arbitrary size, number of lines, step size and speed. Eventually this technique will allow the inspection of complex specimens without direct contact. This will eliminate the tedium and contact reliability problems associated with conventional piezo-ceramic NDE

    Differential postural effects of plantar-flexor muscles fatigue under normal, altered and improved vestibular and neck somatosensory conditions

    The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of plantar-flexor muscles fatigue on postural control during quiet standing under normal, altered and improved vestibular and neck somatosensory conditions. To address this objective, young male university students were asked to stand upright as still as possible with their eyes closed in two conditions of No Fatigue and Fatigue of the plantar-flexor muscles. In Experiment 1 (n=15), the postural task was executed in two Neutral head and Head tilted backward postures, recognized to degrade vestibular and neck somatosensory information. In Experiment 2 (n=15), the postural task was executed in two conditions of No tactile and Tactile stimulation of the neck provided by the application of strips of adhesive bandage to the skin over and around the neck. Centre of foot pressure displacements were recorded using a force platform. Results showed that (1) the Fatigue condition yielded increased CoP displacements relative to the No Fatigue condition (Experiment 1 and Experiment 2), (2) this destabilizing effect was more accentuated in the Head tilted backward posture than Neutral head posture (Experiment 1) and (3) this destabilizing effect was less accentuated in the condition of Tactile stimulation than that of No tactile stimulation of the neck (Experiment 2). In the context of the multisensory control of balance, these results suggest an increased reliance on vestibular and neck somatosensory information for controlling posture during quiet standing in condition of altered ankle neuromuscular function

    The Australian national binge drinking campaign: campaign recognition among young people at a music festival who report risky drinking

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The Australian Government launched a mass media campaign in 2009 to raise awareness of the harms and costs associated risky drinking among young Australians. The aim of this study was to assess if young people attending a music festival who report frequent risky single occasions of drinking (RSOD) recognise the key message of the campaign, "<it>Binge drinking can lead to injuries and regrets</it>", compared to young people who report less frequent RSOD.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cross-sectional behavioural survey of young people (aged 16-29 years) attending a music festival in Melbourne, Australia, was conducted in January 2009. We collected basic demographics, information on alcohol and other drug use and sexual health and behaviour during the previous 12 months, and measured recognition of the Australian National Binge Drinking Campaign key message. We calculated the odds of recognition of the key slogan of the Australian National Binge Drinking Campaign among participants who reported frequent RSOD (defined as reported weekly or more frequent RSOD during the previous 12 months) compared to participants who reported less frequent RSOD.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Overall, three-quarters (74.7%) of 1072 participants included in this analysis recognised the campaign message. In the adjusted analysis, those reporting frequent RSOD had significantly lower odds of recognising the campaign message compared to those not reporting frequent RSOD (OR 0.7, 95% CI 0.5-0.9), whilst females had significantly greater odds of recognising the campaign message compared to males (OR 1.8, 95% CI 1.4-2.1).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Whilst a high proportion of the target group recognised the campaign, our analysis suggests that participants that reported frequent RSOD - and thus the most important group to target - had statistically significantly lower odds of recognising the campaign message.</p
