Frequency dependence of electrical conductivity and dielectric constant of UO2
The dielectric constant and electrical conductivity of single crystal and polycrystalline UO2 are found to be frequency dependent. The dielectric constant measured at low frequencies is anomalously large at room temperature but decreases to a limiting value (~25) below about 130 K. A knee observed in the temperature dependence of the conductivity of polycrystalline UO2 corresponds to a process having an activation energy of 0.15 eV
Homogeneity and projective equivalence of differential equation fields
We propose definitions of homogeneity and projective equivalence for systems
of ordinary differential equations of order greater than two, which allow us to
generalize the concept of a spray (for systems of order two). We show that the
Euler-Lagrange fields of parametric Lagrangians of order greater than one which
are regular (in a natural sense that we define) form a projective equivalence
class of homogeneous systems. We show further that the geodesics, or base
integral curves, of projectively equivalent homogeneous differential equation
fields are the same apart from orientation-preserving reparametrization; that
is, homogeneous differential equation fields determine systems of paths
PROFILE user's guide
User information for program PROFILE, an aerodynamics design utility for refining, plotting, and tabulating airfoil profiles is provided. The theory and implementation details for two of the more complex options are also presented. These are the REFINE option, for smoothing curvature in selected regions while retaining or seeking some specified thickness ratio, and the OPTIMIZE option, which seeks a specified curvature distribution. REFINE uses linear techniques to manipulate ordinates via the central difference approximation to second derivatives, while OPTIMIZE works directly with curvature using nonlinear least squares techniques. Use of programs QPLOT and BPLOT is also described, since all of the plots provided by PROFILE (airfoil coordinates, curvature distributions) are achieved via the general purpose QPLOT utility. BPLOT illustrates (again, via QPLOT) the shape functions used by two of PROFILE's options. The programs were designed and implemented for the Applied Aerodynamics Branch at NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California, and written in FORTRAN and run on a VAX-11/780 under VMS
Creep studies on oriented thermoplastics
The enhancement of many of the mechanical properties of thermoplastics
which may be achieved by orienting the molecules has been known for some
time. It has been exploited in the production of textile fibres end
oriented films. Molecular orientation also occurs during processes such
as extrusion, moulding or forming. Here, unless carefully controlled, it
may well cause a deterioration in the properties of the finished article.
In view of this a systematic study on the anisotropy of the mechanical
properties of thermoplastics, resulting from molecular orientation, is
being carried out at present in these laboratories ⊠[cont.]

A new multi-spectral imaging system for examining paintings
A new multispectral system developed at the National Gallery is presented. The system is capable of measuring the spectral reflectance per pixel of a painting. These spectra are found to be almost as accurate as those recorded with a spectrophotometer; there is no need for any spectral reconstruction apart from a simple cubic interpolation between measured points. The procedure for recording spectra is described and the accuracy of the system is quantified. An example is presented of the use of the system to scan a painting of St. Mary Magdalene by Crivelli. The multispectral data are used in an attempt to identify some of the pigments found in the painting by comparison with a library of spectra obtained from reference pigments using the same system. In addition, it is shown that the multispectral data can be used to render a color image of the original under a chosen illuminant and that interband comparison can help to elucidate features of the painting, such as retouchings and underdrawing, that are not visible in trichromatic images
Basic JCL for the CRAY-1 operating system (COS) with emphasis on making the transition from CDC 7600/SCOPE
Users of the CDC 7600 at Ames are assisted in making the transition to the CRAY-1. Similarities and differences in the basic JCL are summarized, and a dozen or so examples of typical batch jobs for the two systems are shown in parallel. Some changes to look for in FORTRAN programs and in the use of UPDATE are also indicated. No attempt is made to cover magnetic tape handling. The material here should not be considered a substitute for reading the more conventional manuals or the User's Guide for the Advanced Computational Facility, available from the Computer Information Center
