The research was descriptive and explanatory; data collection techniques were the interview and documentary analysis. A questionnaire was used as the instrument. Information was analyzed from a quali-quantitative perspective. Analyses revealed that literacy takes place predominantly in Spanish, based on traditional methodologies. Results showed that children are interested in the written language in Spanish but have some communication difficulties when the classroom teacher does not know their mother tongue. The main conclusion is that there is a need for implementing effective literacy policies that comply both with the legal framework for intercultural bilingual education and with the principles of second language teaching

Computer-aided design and analysis of arch dams

    Get PDF
Double curvature arch dams feature geometrical complexity with a significant amount of parameters involved. Different criteria exist to assist in the design task, from simplified geometrical approaches to optimization procedures. However, most of them present a lack of flexibility and are not integrated in computer-aided design tools. In this contribution, an interactive and flexible software tool is presented to support the complete design process: geometrical definition, FEM model generation (including the mesh, the loads and the boundary conditions) and thermo-mechanical analysis. The design can be performed with different levels of detail to adapt to the information available in each stage of the project. The tool allows defining the shape of the reference cylinder, the excavation depth and slope along the foundation, the crown cantilever thickness and curvature, the shape and location of horizontal arcs; all these steps were described in former contributions. Here, special attention is paid to the introduction of additional features such as joints, spillways, abutments of varying shape and outlet works. All steps have been defined with a high degree of flexibility in the design process. The tool is integrated with the pre and post process software GiD, which allows taking advantage of its functionalities, such as mesh generation and results analysis. It is also coupled with a specific application for thermo-mechanical analysis of dams, developed in Kratos Multiphysics – a framework for building parallel multi-disciplinary simulation software. The whole design process can be followed in a unique environment, because the structural response of preliminary designs can be computed and the results considered to refine the dam geometry

Preceedins of: 10th Workshop of the Cross-Language Evaluation Forum, CLEF 2009.Took place September 30 - October 2, 2009,in Corfu, Greece. The event Web site is http://www.clef-campaign.org/2009.htmlThis paper summarizes the participation of the MIRACLE team in the Multilingual Question Answering Track at CLEF 2009. In this campaign, we took part in the monolingual Spanish task at ResPubliQA and submitted two runs. We have adapted our QA system to the new JRC-Acquis collection and the legal domain. We tested the use of answer filtering and ranking techniques against a baseline system using passage retrieval with no success. The run using question analysis and passage retrieval obtained a global accuracy of 0.33, while the addition of an answer filtering resulted in 0.29. We provide an analy-sis of the results for different questions types to investigate why it is difficult to leverage previous QA techniques. Another task of our work has been the appli-cation of temporal management to QA. Finally we include some discussion of the problems found with the new collection and the complexities of the domain. This work has been partially supported by the Research Network MAVIR (S-0505/TIC/000267) and by the project BRAVO (TIN2007- 67407-C3-01).Publicad

In the present work, the cellular envelope of enterocin CRL35‐sensitive and resistant bacteria belonging to the Listeria genus was analyzed. In general, it can be stated that Listeria cells that were susceptible to this bacteriocin were less sensitive to lytic enzyme lysozyme. In addition, there were no significant differences in surface charges. On the other hand, the study of the adhesion to solvents did not allow to set a clear correlation between sensitivity to the antimicrobial peptide and the physicochemical properties of cell walls. Therefore, structural differences in Listeria cells resistant to enterocin CRL35 would be circumscribed to the plasma membrane.Fil: Farizano, Juan Vicente. Predictive modeling of Enterococcus sp. removal with limited data from different advanced oxidation processes: a machine learning approach

    Get PDF
The removal of contaminants through Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) is a complex task that demands the simultaneous consideration of multiple operating parameters, such as type and concentration of oxidant and catalyst, type and intensity of radiation, composition of aqueous matrix, etc. Designing efficient AOPs often requires expensive and time-consuming laboratory experiments. To improve this process, this study proposes a Machine Learning approach based on a Random Forest (RF) model, to predict Enterococcus sp. concentration in wastewater treated with various AOPs, even when dealing with limited data. To assess our approach under diverse conditions, a data partitioning methodology is used to categorize the different AOPs into three distinct study cases of increasing complexity, from Case I to Case III. The evaluation of the RF model’s performance, combined with the data partitioning methodology, demonstrated its usefulness in predicting missing or additional disinfection values at any instant during the AOPs. Specifically, in Case I, the model excels at generalizing predictions across various AOP treatments, followed by Case II and III, which achieve Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) values below or comparable to the average RMSE of Case I (0.72) in 8 out of 15 and 2 out of 4 treatments, respectively. Moreover, the effects of imbalanced data on model performance are discussed. This highlights the potential of our approach to assess AOPs performance and facilitate the design of new experiments of the same treatment type without the need for additional laboratory trials, even in challenging conditions. The publication is part of Projects TED2021-129969A-C32 and TED2021-129969B-C33 funded by MCIN/AEI/ 10.13039/501100011033 and by “European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR”.

Abstract: The quantification of soil organic carbon (SOC) is essential to agriculture and sustainable use of the land. However, there are difficulties to estimate it in large areas due to high cost of soil sample extraction, and laboratory preparations. There are approaches that may facilitate the estimation of SOC, such as the use of satellite imagery and the application of statistical models based on the spectral bands of the satellite under study. In July of 2017, this study proposed a prediction statistical model from optical-orbital data of the series Landsat, OLI sensor for estimating SOC content
