Evolution variable dependence of jet substructure

Studies on jet substructure have evolved significantly in recent years. Jet substructure is essentially determined by QCD radiations and non-perturbative effects. Predictions of jet substructure are usually different among Monte Carlo event generators, and are governed by the parton shower algorithm implemented. For leading logarithmic parton shower, even though one of the core variables is the evolution variable, its choice is not unique. We examine evolution variable dependence of the jet substructure by developing a parton shower generator that interpolates between different evolution variables using a parameter Ī±\alpha. Jet shape variables and associated jet rates for quark and gluon jets are used to demonstrate the Ī±\alpha-dependence of the jet substructure. We find angular ordered shower predicts wider jets, while relative transverse momentum (pāŠ„p_{\bot}) ordered shower predicts narrower jets. This is qualitatively in agreement with the missing phase space of pāŠ„p_{\bot} ordered showers. Such difference can be reduced by tuning other parameters of the showering algorithm, especially in the low energy region, while the difference tends to increase for high energy jets.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure

Equity Mispricing, Firms\u27 Innovation and Institutional Investors

First essay has two primary objectives. First, I investigate the relation between institutional investors and firmsā€™ innovation activities and second, the impact of different types of institutional investors on firmsā€™ innovation by classifying institutional investors into five groups. After controlling for other determinants of innovation, the results show that higher institutional ownership stability boosts innovation activities measured by the number of patents and citations. The results also indicate that banks, insurance, and investment companies have a positive and significant effect on firmsā€™ innovation, while investment advisors could affect innovation activities negatively. Moreover, when I classify the institutional investors based on the degree of their activism level, the results reveal that more active institutional investors tend exacerbate the firmsā€™ innovation, while most passive institutional investors donā€™t have any statistically significant effect on patent activities. Second essay examines the impact of intuitional investors on equity mispricing by considering their stability, proportion and investment horizon. I find that intuitional ownership stability and proportion can mitigate equity mispricing. Furthermore, by classifying institutional investors to short-term and long-term based on their investment horizon, the results show that long-term institutional investors reduce equity mispricing. In contrast, short-term institutional investors promote equity mispricing

Japan-South Korea relations - a downward spiral: more than "just" historical issues

The latest dispute between Japan and South Korea over compensation for former Korean forced labourers appears to be following a familiar pattern. Historical spats between two most important democracies in Northeast Asia -especially over the phase of Japanese colonial rule- are nothing new. But the tensions run deeper this time, and mutual mistrust has hit unseen heights. Japanese frustration has grown markedly, with Tokyo feeling duped by Seoul. While there have always been tussles over diverging interpretations of history, current domestic and regional developments are an exacerbating factor. Now leaders in both capitals are publicly questioning whether the other side still shares similar core values and strategic goals. The growing rift could easily affect the regional balance of power, weakening America's position as ally of both Japan and South Korea. (Autorenreferat
