Morphological and Bactericidal Effects of Different Antibiotics on Helicobacter pylori
Background: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a spiral Gram negative bacteria that can transform to the coccoid form in adverse conditions.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the in vitro morphological and bactericidal effects of metronidazole, amoxicillin and
clarithromycin on H. pylori.
Materials and Methods: The standard strain 26695 of H. pylori was cultured on Brucella agar (BA) and the minimum inhibitory
concentrations (MICs) of three antibiotics were determined by E-test method. The bacteria were exposed to antibiotics at 1/2 MIC, MIC and
2X MIC concentrations in Brucella broth (BB). Induced coccoid forms were confirmed by Gram staining and light microscopy. The viability
of cells as well as the susceptibility of viable coccoids to antibiotics were examined using the flow cytometry method.
Results: All of the three antibiotics at sub-MIC induced coccoid forms. The highest rates of coccoids (> 90%) were induced at 0.008 μg/
mL concentration (1/2 MIC) of amoxicillin, 72 hours postexposure. Metronidazole and clarithromycin with 1/2 MIC (0.5 and 0.125 µg/mL
respectively) induced lower rates of coccoid forms (60% and 40% respectively). Potent bactericidal effects on coccoids were observed with
Metronidazole at 2X MIC and clarithromycin at MIC (0.25 µg/mL) (80 - 90%). Amoxicillin with MIC and 2X MIC had no bactericidal effect on
coccoid forms.
Conclusions: Despite the good in vitro bactericidal effect of amoxicillin on spiral forms of H. pylori, this antibiotic has little effect on
induced coccoids that may develop after the inappropriate in vivo antibacterial treatment. Hence, for successful therapy, it is essential not
only to eradicate the spiral forms, but to eliminate the viable coccoids
Blow-up profile of rotating 2D focusing Bose gases
We consider the Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing an attractive Bose gas
trapped to a quasi 2D layer by means of a purely harmonic potential, and which
rotates at a fixed speed of rotation . First we study the behavior of
the ground state when the coupling constant approaches , the critical
strength of the cubic nonlinearity for the focusing nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger
equation. We prove that blow-up always happens at the center of the trap, with
the blow-up profile given by the Gagliardo-Nirenberg solution. In particular,
the blow-up scenario is independent of , to leading order. This
generalizes results obtained by Guo and Seiringer (Lett. Math. Phys., 2014,
vol. 104, p. 141--156) in the non-rotating case. In a second part we consider
the many-particle Hamiltonian for bosons, interacting with a potential
rescaled in the mean-field manner w\int\_{\mathbb{R}^2} w(x) dx = 1\beta < 1/2a\_N \to a\_*N \to \infty$

Phlebosclerotic Colitis in a Cirrhotic Patient with Portal Hypertension: The First Case in Korea
Phlebosclerotic colitis is a rare form of ischemic colitis characterized by the thickening of the wall of the affected colon due to fibrous degeneration of submucosal layer of colon and fibrotic obstruction of the colono-mesenteric vein, resulting in the disturbance of venous return from the colon. The pathogenic mechanism of this entity remains unknown but chronic liver disease with portal hypertension is maybe thought to be one of the speculated mechanisms. Here we first report the case of surgically confirmed phlebosclerotic colitis, that was in the early stage but showed the aggressive nature, in a 61-yr-old cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension in Korea
The Composition of the Cuticular and Internal Free Fatty Acids and Alcohols from Lucilia sericata Males and Females
GC, GC–MS, and HPLC–LLSD analyses were used to identify and quantify cuticular and internal lipids in males and females of the blow-fly (Lucilia sericata). Sixteen free fatty acids, seven alcohols and cholesterol were identified and quantitatively determined in the cuticular lipids of L. sericata. Cuticular fatty acids ranged from C6 to C20 and included unsaturated entities such as 16:1n-9, 18:1n-9, 20:4n-3 and 20:5n-3. Cuticular alcohols (only saturated and even-numbered) ranged from C12 to C20 in males and C10 to C22 in females. Only one sterol was found in the cuticular lipids of both males and females. 23 free fatty acids, five alcohols and cholesterol were identified in the internal lipids. Internal fatty acids were present in large amounts—7.4 mg/g (female) and 10.1 mg/g (male). Only traces of internal alcohols (from C14 to C26 in males, from C14 to C22 in females) were found in L. sericata. Large amounts of internal cholesterol were identified in L. sericata males and females (0.49 and 0.97 mg/g of the insect body, respectively)
