    Conference Theme: The New Generation LearnersThe majority of university students worldwide use social media in their everyday life. However, the extent to which students use such online technology for educational purposes is worth exploring. This paper reports on a research that examines university students’ current and potential educational use of social media with an emphasis on students’ learning processes with social media as supportive learning tools. The research also relates students’ learning to five major claims of social media – user generated content (UGC), prosumer, co-creation, sharing, and communities. Before addressing students’ use of social media for learning, this research first examines what students do with social media in both non-academic situations and university-related educational contexts. It then examines their perceived usefulness of various social media activities for academic and non-academic contexts. Various approaches in applying social media to facilitate students' work will also be discussed in this paper.postprin

    Media awareness in the age of new media: a case study of Primary 4 students in Hong Kong

    This study examined media use and media awareness for Primary 4 students from four schools in Hong Kong (equivalent to Grade 4 in America) and how well their teachers understood their habits of and preferences for media use. The media awareness and media use patterns of students with regard to newspapers, television programmes, radio channels and the Internet were investigated. Results showed that, these students, despite being the new generation of the new media still believed that the news from television, radio and newspapers are more reliable. In addition, they were found to be more proactive media users than their teachers thought. They were more content-oriented in choosing a particular newspaper or TV channel instead of being influenced by their teachers and parents. The teachers were also not able to make very accurate predictions of their students' skills in media evaluation. The findings suggested that more contextual and in-depth approaches are needed to assess the students' media use patterns, from which relevant media education models can be derived.postprin

    Using wikis for collaborative learning: a case study of an Undergraduate Students’ Group Project in Hong Kong

    This research investigates the use of wiki in a collaborative project by undergraduate students in a university in Hong Kong. The wiki contents and work patterns of undergraduate students who were engaged in a collaborative group project were examined and MediaWiki’s potential for knowledge building was explored. Over a period of three months, 21 undergraduate students in a Knowledge Management course were divided into four groups. They used MediaWiki as a collaborative platform for communication and for working on a group project. After completion of the group projects, wiki log data were collected from MediaWiki, which included the number and dates of contributions, version changes, and discussions. Data obtained from the wiki logs were analyzed using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods.     Factors influencing knowledge transfer among Internship Students using Facebook

    Keeping in contact with and sharing knowledge ubiquitously among peer students and teachers during professional internship are utmost important in supporting students both cognitively and affectively to overcome difficulties in their new workplaces. This paper examines the potential factors and its relative impact on influencing the effectiveness of using Facebook as a knowledge-sharing tool during students’ professional education. A case study was implemented to study a group of university students’ perspectives on using Facebook in their internship. The findings are presented in 4 dimensions, ranging from Human, Policy, Technology, and Knowledge aspects as the theoretical framework with 17 potential factors identified. Among the findings, Social Tie got the highest impact in Human aspects as Facebook could create a peer support network among students. Scaffolding reflections has the highest impact among Policy factors because guidance can assist students to formulate content for their reflective journals. Facebook’s News Feed function has been recognized as the highest influence among Technology factors because this function enables students to be updated instantly and frequently on the latest development within the internship activities. Explicit knowledge transfer reached the highest impact among Knowledge factors as students can apply Information Management related model into their working situations. All in all, the findings of the study also proved that factors from the literature are applicable to the professional experience internship context. This study provides insights for universities to better utilize Facebook to support knowledge transfer in students’ internships. The theoretical framework used in this study may serve as a basis for further research on the use of Facebook for knowledge transfer.published_or_final_versio

    Development of information search expertise: Research students' knowledge of databases

    Purpose - This paper sets out to report on a study of 12 postgraduate research students' development of information search expertise. It focuses on students' perceived importance and growth of knowledge of different databases as they progress through their studies. Design/methodology/approach - Taking an in-depth longitudinal approach, this study makes use of surveys, direct observations of students' searching of various databases, students' verbalization of their thoughts while searching databases and interviews during a one-year period. The paper focuses on analyzing the data from surveying and interviewing the students with regard to their use of databases. Findings - It was found that many students were initially unfamiliar with many of the databases important to them and that the familiarity developed during the year contributed importantly to their development of information search expertise. This suggests that much work has to be done to inform and instruct students about these "treasures". Research limitations/implications - This study adopted an in-depth longitudinal approach to study 12 students. Although it reveals various interesting observations and findings, it lacks the power of generalization due to its small sample size. Based on the results of this study, it would be meaningful to carry out further studies with a bigger sample to see whether the findings identified in this study will still hold true. Originality/value - Based on the findings, this paper further identifies features that may increase the usefulness of a journal database and makes suggestions on ways to improve library support for the effective use of databases.postprin

    MediaWiki and Google Docs as online collaboration tools for group project co-construction

    This paper reports and describes the use of MediaWiki and Google Docs as online collaboration tools for co-constructing knowledge in a group project. Undergraduate Information Management students used MediaWiki and Google Docs as collaboration tools for carrying out two separate projects. We assessed and compared students’ perception on the effectiveness of MediaWiki and Google Docs after the completion of the projects. Results indicated positive experiences from using the tools for online collaboration in the group projects for some of the students.
