Optimal Energy Estimation in Path-Integral Monte Carlo Simulations
We investigate the properties of two standard energy estimators used in
path-integral Monte Carlo simulations. By disentangling the variance of the
estimators and their autocorrelation times we analyse the dependence of the
performance on the update algorithm and present a detailed comparison of
refined update schemes such as multigrid and staging techniques. We show that a
proper combination of the two estimators leads to a further reduction of the
statistical error of the estimated energy with respect to the better of the two

Technology development for lunar base water recycling
This paper will review previous and ongoing work in aerospace water recycling and identify research activities required to support development of a lunar base. The development of a water recycle system for use in the life support systems envisioned for a lunar base will require considerable research work. A review of previous work on aerospace water recycle systems indicates that more efficient physical and chemical processes are needed to reduce expendable and power requirements. Development work on biological processes that can be applied to microgravity and lunar environments also needs to be initiated. Biological processes are inherently more efficient than physical and chemical processes and may be used to minimize resupply and waste disposal requirements. Processes for recovering and recycling nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur also need to be developed to support plant growth units. The development of efficient water quality monitors to be used for process control and environmental monitoring also needs to be initiated

The Subcolonization and Buildup of \u3ci\u3eTetrastichus Julis,\u3c/i\u3e (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) a Larval Parasitoid of the Cereal Leaf Beetle, (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan
Following initial establishment of the parasitoid, Tetrastichus julis (Walker), at a carefully managed field nursery, releases of parasitized Oulema melanopus larvae were made by Michigan county agents at preselected sites throughout the lower peninsula during 1970-74. A follow-up recovery program during 1971-75 revealed continued dispersion and population increase for T. julis. An independent census verified the increasing rates of parasitism

Electron Photodetachment from Aqueous Anions. I. Quantum Yields for Generation of Hydrated Electron by 193 and 248 nm Laser Photoexcitation of Miscellaneous Inorganic Anions
Time resolved transient absorption spectroscopy has been used to determine
quantum yields for electron photodetachment in 193 nm and (where possible) 248
nm laser excitation of miscellaneous aqueous anions, including
hexacyanoferrate(II), sulfate, sulfite, halide anions (Cl-, Br-, and I-),
pseudohalide anions (OH-, HS-, CNS-), and several common inorganic anions for
which no quantum yields have been reported heretofore: SO3=, NO2-, NO3-, ClO3-
and ClO4-. Molar extinction coefficients for these anions and photoproducts of
electron detachment from these anions at the excitation wavelengths were also
determined. These results are discussed in the context of recent ultrafast
kinetic studies and compared with the previous data obtained by product
analyses. We suggest using electron photodetachment from the aqueous halide and
pseudohalide anions as actinometric standard for time-resolved studies of

Betaine, organic acids and inulin do not affect ileal and total tract nutrient digestibility or microbial fermentation in piglets
The study was conducted to investigate the effects of betaine alone or combined with organic acids and inulin on ileal and total tract nutrient digestibilities and intestinal microbial fermentation characteristics in piglets. In total, 24 four-week-old barrows with an average initial body weight of 6.7 kg were used in two consecutive experiments with 12 piglets each. Betaine, organic acids and inulin at a level of 0.2, 0.4 and 0.2%, respectively, or combinations of these supplements were added to the basal diet. The supplementation of betaine, organic acids and inulin or any of their combinations did not affect ileal and total tract nutrient digestibilities. The microbial fermentation products both at the ileal and faecal level were not affected by any of the treatments. In conclusion, combining betaine with organic acids and inulin did not have any associated effects on the variables that were measured
