The origin and the purpose of the vow made by the Vootrekkers in 1838The vow made by the Voortrekkers in 1838, and its continued celebration by the descendants of the Voortrekkers - and Afrikaners in general - is often the subject of severe criticism from theologians, historians and politicians alike. By investigating the circumstances (historical and theological) leading to the taking of this solemn oath, an attempt is made to demonstrate that the vow was undertaken in good faith by simple believers, stating their dependence on God, and bringing praise to Him. Since it was their intention to include their descendants in the honouring of this vow, the modem Afrikaner should also take pleasure in praising God in this way

About the Functional Form of the Parisi Overlap Distribution for the Three-Dimensional Edwards-Anderson Ising Spin Glass

Recently, it has been conjectured that the statistics of extremes is of relevance for a large class of correlated system. For certain probability densities this predicts the characteristic large xx fall-off behavior f(x)exp(aex)f(x)\sim\exp (-a e^x), a>0a>0. Using a multicanonical Monte Carlo technique, we have calculated the Parisi overlap distribution P(q)P(q) for the three-dimensional Edward-Anderson Ising spin glass at and below the critical temperature, even where P(q)P(q) is exponentially small. We find that a probability distribution related to extreme order statistics gives an excellent description of P(q)P(q) over about 80 orders of magnitude.Comment: 4 pages RevTex, 3 figure

    Environmental effect on egress simulation

Abstract. Evacuation and egress simulations can be a useful tool for studying the effect of design decisions on the flow of agent movement. This type of simulation can be used to determine before hand the effect of design decisions and enable exploration of potential improvements. In this work, we study at how agent egress is affected by the environment in real world and large scale virtual environments and investigate metrics to analyze the flow. Our work differs from many evacuation systems in that we support grouping restrictions between agents (e.g., families or other social groups traveling together), and model scenarios with multiple modes of transportation with physically realistic dynamics (e.g., individuals walk from a building to their own cars and leave only when all people in the group arrive).

    Near-threshold K+K^{+} Production in Heavy-ion Collisions

Within a hadronic transport model we study in detail contributions to kaon yields and momentum spectra from various baryon (resonance)-baryon (resonance) and πN\pi N interactions in heavy-ion collisions at beam energies near the free-space kaon production threshold. It is found that the finite lifetime of baryon resonances affects significantly the shape of kaon spectra, and the high energy parts of the kaon spectra are dominated by kaons from πNΛK+\pi N\rightarrow \Lambda K^{+} processes. N(1440)N^{*}(1440) resonances are found to contribute about 10\% to the kaon yield. Effects of boosting the Fermi momentum distributions of the two colliding nuclei into their center of mass frame, centrality of the reaction as well as the nuclear equation of state on kaon yields and spectra are also discussed. Model calculations on K+K^{+}, π+\pi^{+} and π\pi^{-} spectra for the reaction of Au+Au at Ebeam/A=1.0E_{beam}/A= 1.0 GeV are compared with the experimental data from the KaoS collaboration.Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures available upon request.
