Age-Related Skeletal Muscle Atrophy in Humans: An Immunohistochemical and Morphometric Study

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to determine age-related changes in three human muscles with different function and location in the body. The cross sectional area and the percentage of fibers type I, type IIA and type IIX were studied in vastus lateralis, deltoideus and external intercostal muscle. Muscle samples were obtained from 30 male subjects, aged 20–80 years. Fiber types were defined immunohistochemically, using monoclonal antibodies specific for type I, type IIA and type IIX fibers. Cross sectional area of muscle fibers was analyzed morphometrically by computerized image analysis. All muscle fiber types (I, IIA, IIX) showed the reduction in the fiber size in all three examined muscles. In all muscles the proportion of type I and type IIA was changed, but not in type IIX. With increasing age results showed the increase in proportion of type I, while proportion of type IIA fibers decreased, with vastus lateralis muscle being the most affected. These results suggest that age-related muscle atrophy is not a general phenomenon, and does not affect all muscles equally

    Dietary Supplements in Multiple Sclerosis

Replacement therapy is a treatment that is not based on accepted medical knowledge and science that is not in accordance with current medical doctrine. Additional treatment is not contrary to the accepted doctrine of medical schools, but serves only as a supplement to the accepted treatment. Most general practitioners in England and Germany do not contradict these forms of treatment. On average 2/3 of patients with MS in the course of the disease try alternate options and additional treatment. Alternate forms of treatment that are most commonly used are: diet, homeopathy, chiropractic procedures and methods of relaxation Detrimental effects of alternative and complementary treatments for patients with MS is not known, but we must avoid the use of active substances entering the body and blood of patients, because in that way we can start a modified immune response. Used are acupuncture, and particularly yoga. Cannabis takes special place. Cannabinoids have antioxidant and neuroprotective eff ect. Oral cannabinoids and marijuana smoking can relieve some symptoms of MS including spasm and pain. The controlled studies did not validate the effect of oral cannabinoids on spasm in MS. The aim is to give a brief overview of dietary supplements and the effects of certain vitamins, minerals and oil in people with multiple sclerosis

Inclusive production of charged pions in p+C collisions at 158 GeV/c beam momentum

The production of charged pions in minimum bias p+C interactions is studied using a sample of 377000 inelastic events obtained with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS at 158 GeV/c beam momentum. The data cover a phase space area ranging from 0 to 1.8 GeV/c in transverse momentum and from -0.1 to 0.5 in Feynman x. Inclusive invariant cross sections are given on a grid of 270 bins per charge thus offering for the first time a dense coverage of the projectile hemisphere and of the cross-over region into the target fragmentation zone.Comment: 31 pages, 30 figures, submitted to European Journal of Physic

Baryon Stopping and Charged Particle Distributions in Central Pb+Pb Collisions at 158 GeV per Nucleon

Net proton and negative hadron spectra for central \PbPb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon at the CERN SPS were measured and compared to spectra from lighter systems. Net baryon distributions were derived from those of net protons, utilizing model calculations of isospin contributions as well as data and model calculations of strange baryon distributions. Stopping (rapidity shift with respect to the beam) and mean transverse momentum \meanpt of net baryons increase with system size. The rapidity density of negative hadrons scales with the number of participant nucleons for nuclear collisions, whereas their \meanpt is independent of system size. The \meanpt dependence upon particle mass and system size is consistent with larger transverse flow velocity at midrapidity for \PbPb compared to \SS central collisions.Comment: This version accepted for publication in PRL. 4 pages, 3 figures. Event-by-event fluctuations of the kaon to pion ratio in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV per Nucleon

We present the first measurement of fluctuations from event to event in the production of strange particles in collisions of heavy nuclei. The ratio of charged kaons to charged pions is determined for individual central Pb+Pb collisions. After accounting for the fluctuations due to detector resolution and finite number statistics we derive an upper limit on genuine non-statistical fluctuations, perhaps related to a first or second order QCD phase transition. Such fluctuations are shown to be very small.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
