Mortifying exchanges An ethnological investigation has been carried out in the Sevrin district at Amiens, a former industrial, working-class stronghold of the town. This district, which has been the scene of a rehabilitation operation, with very contradictory stages, has seen one part of its inhabitants disperse or quite simply die under the joint effects of what is presented as an endogenous logic of global "condemnation". Among them what is known as alcoholism appears to be a central one. Here, we want to think over some of the aspects which link the imaginary invention of identity and the position of actors in society to "drinking" or rather to "drinking too much".Une investigation ethnologique a été menée dans le quartier Sevrin à Amiens, ancien bastion ouvrier et industriel de la ville. Ce quartier, qui a été le lieu d'une opération de réhabilitation aux étapes très contradictoires, a vu une partie de ses habitants se disperser ou plus simplement mourir sous les effets conjoints de ce qui se présente comme une logique endogène de "condamnation" globale. Parmi ceux-ci, ce qu'on désigne extérieurement comme l"alcoolisme" apparaît central. On se propose ici de porter la réflexion sur quelques-uns des aspects qui lient la construction imaginaire de l'identité et de la position des acteurs dans la société, au fait de "boire", ou plutôt de "boire beaucoup".Sélim Monique. Monique Selim, The Status of the Other An ethnological investigation poses specific methodological problems linked to the direct social communication between the researcher and the subjects of the research. The interpersonal relations which are produced during the course of the research constitute the conditions upon which the gathering of information depends, and the interpretation of these relations is decisive in the elaboration of the analysis. The subjects of the research confer a particular status upon the ethnologist in relation to the microstructures within which he or she functions and to the social perspectives forged by the actors on the basis of their own identity and their place in the society. In this context, the "status of the other" attributed to the ethnologist seems to be an essential mental tool. This article identifies variations of this "status of the other" in three very different urban contexts, two of them in French, popular milieux, and the third on the Indian subcontinent.Une investigation ethnologique pose des problèmes méthodologiques spécifiques liés à la communication sociale directe entre le chercheur et les acteurs. Les relations interpersonnelles qui se nouent dans l'enquête constituent les conditions de recueil des matériaux et leur interprétation en tant que telle est décisive dans l'élaboration de l'analyse : l'ethnologue se voit conférer par les sujets une position toujours particulière qui renvoie à la fois aux microstructures dans lesquelles il s'est inséré et aux visions sociales que forgent les acteurs de leur propre identité et de leur place dans la société. Le « statut d'autre » auquel l'ethnologue est assigné apparaît dans ce contexte un outil essentiel de connaissance. Cet article appréhende les variations déterminantes de ce « statut d'autre » à travers trois terrains urbains très différents, deux dans les milieux populaires français, le troisième dans une usine du continent Indien.Sélim Monique.
