Nonlocal spectral properties of disordered alloys
A general method is proposed for calculating a fully k-dependent, continuous,
and causal spectral function A(k,E) within the recently introduced nonlocal
version of the coherent-potential approximation (NLCPA). The method involves
the combination of both periodic and anti-periodic solutions to the associated
cluster problem and also leads to correct bulk quantities for small cluster
sizes. We illustrate the method by investigating the Fermi surface of a
two-dimensional alloy. Dramatically, we find a smeared electronic topological

What do faculty and students really think about e-books?
Purpose - The purpose of this article is to report on a large-scale survey that was carried Out to assess academic users' awareness, perceptions and existing levels of use of e-books. The survey also seeks to find out about the purposes to which electronic books were put, and to obtain an understanding of the most effective library marketing and communication channels.Design/methodology/approach - An e-mail invitation to participate in the survey was distributed to all UCL staff and students (approximately 27,000) in November 2006, and 1,818 completions were received, an effective response rate of at least 6.7 per cent. Statistical analyses were carried out on the data using Software Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).Findings - The survey findings point to various ways in which user uptake and acceptance of e-books may be encouraged. Book discovery behaviour, a key issue for publishers and librarians in both print and electronic environments, emerges as a critical focus for service delivery and enhancement.Originality/value - The survey is part of an action research project, CIBER's SuperBook, that will further investigate the issues raised in this initial benchmarking survey using deep log analysis and qualitative methods. The paper partly fills the gap in the literature on e-books which has mainly focused on usage and not the users
Investigation of the nonlocal coherent-potential approximation
Recently the nonlocal coherent-potential approximation (NLCPA) has been
introduced by Jarrell and Krishnamurthy for describing the electronic structure
of substitutionally disordered systems. The NLCPA provides systematic
corrections to the widely used coherent-potential approximation (CPA) whilst
preserving the full symmetry of the underlying lattice. Here an analytical and
systematic numerical study of the NLCPA is presented for a one-dimensional
tight-binding model Hamiltonian, and comparisons with the embedded cluster
method (ECM) and molecular coherent potential approximation (MCPA) are made.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure
Phase mixing of a three dimensional magnetohydrodynamic pulse
Phase mixing of a three dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) pulse is studied in the compressive, three-dimensional (without an ignorable coordinate) regime. It is shown that the efficiency of decay of an Alfvénic part of a compressible MHD pulse is related linearly to the degree of localization of the pulse in the homogeneous transverse direction. In the developed stage of phase mixing (for large times), coupling to its compressive part does not alter the power-law decay of an Alfvénic part of a compressible MHD pulse. The same applies to the dependence upon the resistivity of the Alfvénic part of the pulse. All this implies that the dynamics of Alfvén waves can still be qualitatively understood in terms of the previous 2.5D models. Thus, the phase mixing remains a relevant paradigm for the coronal heating applications in the realistic 3D geometry and compressive plasma
Clinical experience with organ transplantation

SPLENIC HOMOTRANSPLANTATION.
During the past 12 months, five clinical whole-organ splenic homotransplantations have been carried out with the objective of providing active immunologic tissue for the recipient patients. In one case with hypogammaglobulinemia, it was hoped that the transplanted tissue would alleviate a state of immunologic deficiency. In the other four, all of whom had terminal malignancies, the purpose was to superimpose a state of altered immunologic reactivity upon the host in the hope of thereby suppressing the inexorable growth of the neoplasms. As will be described, these procedures can now be judged in each instance to have been without benefit. Nevertheless, full documentation of the cases seems justified not only because of the many implications of transplantation of immunologically competent tissue, but also because of the potentially important observations made during the care of these patients. In addition, a full account will be presented of the supporting canine studies of splenic homotransplantation, inasmuch as many of the principles of clinical therapy and investigation derived from prior observations in the dog. The fact that it is possible to obtain viable splenic homografts in the dog for as long as two-thirds of a year without the production of runt disease or other harmful effects may have application in future research on bone marrow, other lymphoid, or hepatic homografts
