    Observation on Variance and Covariance Estimates for Carcass Traits in Bull and Steer Progeny

    Carcass measures from 970 cattle were collected at the Iowa State University Rhodes and McNay research farms over a 6-year period. Data were from bull and steer progeny of composite, Angus, and Simmental sires mated to three composite lines of dams. The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of sex differences on genetic parameter estimates for carcass traits. Estimation of genetic parameters using a threetrait mixed model showed differences between bulls and steers in h2 and genetic correlations. Heritability for carcass weight, percentage retail product, retail product weight, fat thickness, and longissimus muscle area from bull data were .43, .04, .46, .05, and .21, respectively. The corresponding values for steer data were in order of .32, .24, .40, .42, and .07, respectively. Furthermore, genetic correlations between some of the traits were different both in magnitude and direction when evaluated by sex. The results suggested possible differences in genetic parameter estimates between bulls and steer data. Hence, further study on effects of sex differences on genetic parameter estimation and a designing possible strategy to overcome the problem were emphasized

    A Project to Develop Genetic Specification for the Beef Industry

    A new beef breeding project will be conducted at the Rhodes and McNay farms of ISU. The project will use the field data of the American Angus Association along with the research resources (cattle) of the farms to study questions that will enhance the genetic investigations using the field data. It will build on the expertise developed at ISU with ultrasound to measure body composition in the live animal and in the carcass. Two selection lines, using registered Angus obtained as heifers and through ET, of 200 females each will be selected for increased intramuscular fat (Q line) and for increased retail product (R line). The estimation of the genetic correlation between quality and amount of product can best be accomplished through the study of one generation of selection using measures of body composition derived from ultrasound. A progeny test herd will be maintained to evaluate all sires used through progeny carcass testing and to further research with ultrasound. The project will study efficiency of body maintenance. Results will be shared through the Beef Improvement Federation to benefit all producers in the development of sound programs to profitably produce specified beef products

    Scaling dependence on the fluid viscosity ratio in the selective withdrawal transition

    In the selective withdrawal experiment fluid is withdrawn through a tube with its tip suspended a distance S above a two-fluid interface. At sufficiently low withdrawal rates, Q, the interface forms a steady state hump and only the upper fluid is withdrawn. When Q is increased (or S decreased), the interface undergoes a transition so that the lower fluid is entrained with the upper one, forming a thin steady-state spout. Near this transition the hump curvature becomes very large and displays power-law scaling behavior. This scaling allows for steady-state hump profiles at different flow rates and tube heights to be scaled onto a single similarity profile.     The economic impact of workplace wellness programmes in Canada

    Background The economic benefits of workplace wellness programmes (WWPs) are commonly cited as a reason for employers to implement such programmes; however, there is limited evidence outside of the US context exploring their economic impact. US evidence is less relevant in countries such as Canada with universal publicly funded health systems because of the lower potential employer savings from WWPs. Aims To conduct a systematic review of the Canadian literature investigating the economic impact of WWPs from an employer perspective. The quality of that evidence was also assessed. Methods We reviewed literature which included analyses of four economic outcomes: return on investment calculations; cost-effectiveness or cost-benefit analyses; valuations of productivity, turnover, absenteeism and/or presenteeism costs; and valuations of health care utilization costs. We applied the British Medical Journal (BMJ) Economic Evaluation Working Party Checklist to evaluate the quality of this evidence. Results Eight studies met the inclusion criteria. Although the studies showed that WWPs generated economic benefits from an employer perspective (largely from productivity changes), none of the reviewed studies were in the high-quality category (i.e. fulfilled at least 75% of the checklist criteria) and most had severe methodological issues. Conclusions Though the Canadian literature pertaining to the economic impact of WWPs spans over three decades, robust evidence on this topic remains sparse. Future research should include a comparable control group, a time horizon of over a year, both direct and indirect costs, and researchers should apply analytical techniques that account for potential selection bias

    Individual Entanglements in a Simulated Polymer Melt

    We examine entanglements using monomer contacts between pairs of chains in a Brownian-dynamics simulation of a polymer melt. A map of contact positions with respect to the contacting monomer numbers (i,j) shows clustering in small regions of (i,j) which persists in time, as expected for entanglements. Using the ``space''-time correlation function of the aforementioned contacts, we show that a pair of entangled chains exhibits a qualitatively different behavior than a pair of distant chains when brought together. Quantitatively, about 50% of the contacts between entangled chains are persistent contacts not present in independently moving chains.
