    Effect of hybridization on the magnetic properties of correlated two-band metals

    The magnetic properties of transition-like metals are discussed within the single site approximation, which is a picture to take into account electron correlations. The metal is described by two hybridized bands one of which includes Coulomb correlation. The presented results indicate that ferromagnetism arises for adequate values of hybridization (V), correlation (U) and occupation number(nσn_{\sigma}).     Results are presented of a wind tunnel test on the directional stability of space shuttle booster configurations. The test was conducted at the 14-inch trisonic tunnel starting 6 December 1971 and continued through 11 December 1971 for a total of 66 occupancy hours. Configurations tested included a cylindrical body with two axisymmetrical noses, one with and without canopy, one delta wing, located in two positions, five vertical tails (including a V tail), two having split rudders, ventral fins, two sets of chines, three airbreathing engine pods, and rocket engine shrouds.     Where is the fuzz? Undetected Lyman alpha nebulae around QSOs at z~2.3

    We observed a small sample of 5 radio-quiet QSOs with integral field spectroscopy to search for possible extended emission in the Lyα\alpha line. We subtracted the QSO point sources using a simple PSF self-calibration technique that takes advantage of the simultaneous availability of spatial and spectral information. In 4 of the 5 objects we find no significant traces of extended Lyα\alpha emission beyond the contribution of the QSO nuclei itself, while in UM 247 there is evidence for a weak and spatially quite compact excess in the Lyα\alpha line at several kpc outside the nucleus. For all objects in our sample we estimated detection limits for extended, smoothly distributed Lyα\alpha emission by adding fake nebulosities into the datacubes and trying to recover them after PSF subtraction. Our observations are consistent with other studies showing that giant Lyα\alpha nebulae such as those found recently around some quasars are very rare. Lyα\alpha fuzz around typical radio-quiet QSOs is fainter, less extended and is therefore much harder to detect. The faintness of these structures is consistent with the idea that radio-quiet QSOs typically reside in dark matter haloes of modest masses.Comment: 12 Pages, Accepted for publication in A&

    Manipulation Strategies for the Rank Maximal Matching Problem

    We consider manipulation strategies for the rank-maximal matching problem. In the rank-maximal matching problem we are given a bipartite graph G=(AP,E)G = (A \cup P, E) such that AA denotes a set of applicants and PP a set of posts. Each applicant aAa \in A has a preference list over the set of his neighbours in GG, possibly involving ties. Preference lists are represented by ranks on the edges - an edge (a,p)(a,p) has rank ii, denoted as rank(a,p)=irank(a,p)=i, if post pp belongs to one of aa's ii-th choices. A rank-maximal matching is one in which the maximum number of applicants is matched to their rank one posts and subject to this condition, the maximum number of applicants is matched to their rank two posts, and so on. A rank-maximal matching can be computed in O(min(cn,n)m)O(\min(c \sqrt{n},n) m) time, where nn denotes the number of applicants, mm the number of edges and cc the maximum rank of an edge in an optimal solution. A central authority matches applicants to posts. It does so using one of the rank-maximal matchings. Since there may be more than one rank- maximal matching of GG, we assume that the central authority chooses any one of them randomly. Let a1a_1 be a manipulative applicant, who knows the preference lists of all the other applicants and wants to falsify his preference list so that he has a chance of getting better posts than if he were truthful. In the first problem addressed in this paper the manipulative applicant a1a_1 wants to ensure that he is never matched to any post worse than the most preferred among those of rank greater than one and obtainable when he is truthful. In the second problem the manipulator wants to construct such a preference list that the worst post he can become matched to by the central authority is best possible or in other words, a1a_1 wants to minimize the maximal rank of a post he can become matched to

    Polymeric forms of carbon in dense lithium carbide

    The immense interest in carbon nanomaterials continues to stimulate intense research activities aimed to realize carbon nanowires, since linear chains of carbon atoms are expected to display novel and technologically relevant optical, electrical and mechanical properties. Although various allotropes of carbon (e.g., diamond, nanotubes, graphene, etc.) are among the best known materials, it remains challenging to stabilize carbon in the one-dimensional form because of the difficulty to suitably saturate the dangling bonds of carbon. Here, we show through first-principles calculations that ordered polymeric carbon chains can be stabilized in solid Li2_2C2_2 under moderate pressure. This pressure-induced phase (above 5 GPa) consists of parallel arrays of twofold zigzag carbon chains embedded in lithium cages, which display a metallic character due to the formation of partially occupied carbon lone-pair states in \emph{sp}2^2-like hybrids. It is found that this phase remains the most favorable one in a wide range of pressure. At extreme pressure (larger the 215 GPa) a structural and electronic phase transition towards an insulating single-bonded threefold-coordinated carbon network is predicted.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure

    Nonlocal edge state transport in the quantum spin Hall state

    We present direct experimental evidence for nonlocal transport in HgTe quantum wells in the quantum spin Hall regime, in the absence of any external magnetic field. The data conclusively show that the non-dissipative quantum transport occurs through edge channels, while the contacts lead to equilibration between the counter-propagating spin states at the edge. We show that the experimental data agree quantitatively with the theory of the quantum spin Hall effect.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

    The Offline Software Framework of the Pierre Auger Observatory

    The Pierre Auger Observatory is designed to unveil the nature and the origins of the highest energy cosmic rays. The large and geographically dispersed collaboration of physicists and the wide-ranging collection of simulation and reconstruction tasks pose some special challenges for the offline analysis software. We have designed and implemented a general purpose framework which allows collaborators to contribute algorithms and sequencing instructions to build up the variety of applications they require. The framework includes machinery to manage these user codes, to organize the abundance of user-contributed configuration files, to facilitate multi-format file handling, and to provide access to event and time-dependent detector information which can reside in various data sources. A number of utilities are also provided, including a novel geometry package which allows manipulation of abstract geometrical objects independent of coordinate system choice. The framework is implemented in C++, and takes advantage of object oriented design and common open source tools, while keeping the user side simple enough for C++ novices to learn in a reasonable time.     Zener Tunneling Between Landau Orbits in a High-Mobility Two-Dimensional Electron Gas

    Magnetotransport in a laterally confined two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) can exhibit modified scattering channels owing to a tilted Hall potential. Transitions of electrons between Landau levels with shifted guiding centers can be accomplished through a Zener tunneling mechanism, and make a significant contribution to the magnetoresistance. A remarkable oscillation effect in weak field magnetoresistance has been observed in high-mobility 2DEGs in GaAs-AlGa0.3_{0.3}As0.7_{0.7} heterostructures, and can be well explained by the Zener mechanism.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures.     High participation rate among 25 721 patients with broad age range in a hospital-based research project involving whole-genome sequencing - the Lausanne Institutional Biobank.

    We aimed to evaluate the interest of adult inpatients and selected outpatients in engaging in a large, real-life, hospital-based, genomic medicine research project and in receiving clinically actionable incidental findings. Within the framework of the cross-sectional Institutional Biobank of Lausanne, Switzerland, a total of 25721 patients of the CHUV University Hospital were systematically invited to grant researchers access to their biomedical data and to donate blood for future analyses, including whole-genome sequencing. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify personal factors, including age, gender, religion, ethnicity, citizenship, education level and mode of admission, associated with willingness to participate in this genomic research project and with interest in receiving clinically actionable incidental findings. The overall participation rate was 79% (20343/25721). Participation rate declined progressively with age, averaging 83%, 75%, 67% and 62% in patients aged <64 years (n = 13108), ≥64 years (n = 12613), ≥80 years (n = 4557) and ≥90 years (n = 1050), respectively. Factors associated with participation substantially differed between age strata. Patients less likely to participate included women (odds ratio 0.86, [95% confidence interval 0.79-0.95] and 0.78 [0.71-0.85] before and after age 64, respectively), non-Swiss (0.81 [0.74-0.90] and 0.58 [0.52-0.65]) and those admitted through the emergency ward (0.88 [0.79-0.98] and 0.66 [0.60-0.73]). Religion and marital status were associated with participation among patients aged <64 years. A total of 19 018 (93%) participants were willing to be re-contacted for incidental findings. A high education level was associated with higher participation rate, but not with higher willingness to receive incidental findings within the population who had agreed to participate. A large proportion of adult patients, even among the elderly, are willing to actively participate and receive incidental findings in this systematic hospital-based precision and genomic medicine research program with broad consent
