The texture of the Es Codolar gravel beach, South of Ibiza, was analyzed from samples in four sections of the beach. In each section two samples have been taken: one from the upper berm and another from the lower one. A total of 400 pebbles and cobbles were measured. The distribution of shingles, their grain size and sorting have been analyzed. Shingle shape has been parameterized trough the Zingg diagram, the Wadell roundness index, the maximum projection of sphericity and the Oblate-Prolate Index. The results show a clear gradient both in grain size, roundness and the shingles sphericity from Southeast to Northwest. This clearly indicates that the source of sediment supply are located at Cap Falcó detachments, Transport is produced by long shore drift towards the Northwest and he result is the formation of a shingle barrier that closes a wetland that nowadays currently occupy by the Salinas of Ibiza

Aims: This report describes the baseline characteristics of patients in the Reduction of Events with Darbepoetin alfa in Heart Failure trial (RED-HF) which is testing the hypothesis that anaemia correction with darbepoetin alfa will reduce the composite endpoint of death from any cause or hospital admission for worsening heart failure, and improve other outcomes.

Methods and results: Key demographic, clinical, and laboratory findings, along with baseline treatment, are reported and compared with those of patients in other recent clinical trials in heart failure. Compared with other recent trials, RED-HF enrolled more elderly [mean age 70 (SD 11.4) years], female (41%), and black (9%) patients. RED-HF patients more often had diabetes (46%) and renal impairment (72% had an estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min/1.73 m2). Patients in RED-HF had heart failure of longer duration [5.3 (5.4) years], worse NYHA class (35% II, 63% III, and 2% IV), and more signs of congestion. Mean EF was 30% (6.8%). RED-HF patients were well treated at randomization, and pharmacological therapy at baseline was broadly similar to that of other recent trials, taking account of study-specific inclusion/exclusion criteria. Median (interquartile range) haemoglobin at baseline was 112 (106–117) g/L.

Conclusion: The anaemic patients enrolled in RED-HF were older, moderately to markedly symptomatic, and had extensive co-morbidity.</p&gt

Monitoring biological wastewater treatment processes: Recent advances in spectroscopy applications

    Get PDF
Biological processes based on aerobic and anaerobic technologies have been continuously developed to wastewater treatment and are currently routinely employed to reduce the contaminants discharge levels in the environment. However, most methodologies commonly applied for monitoring key parameters are labor intensive, time-consuming and just provide a snapshot of the process. Thus, spectroscopy applications in biological processes are, nowadays, considered a rapid and effective alternative technology for real-time monitoring though still lacking implementation in full-scale plants. In this review, the application of spectroscopic techniques to aerobic and anaerobic systems is addressed focusing on UV--Vis, infrared, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Furthermore, chemometric techniques, valuable tools to extract the relevant data, are also referred. To that effect, a detailed analysis is performed for aerobic and anaerobic systems to summarize the findings that have been obtained since 2000. Future prospects for the application of spectroscopic techniques in biological wastewater treatment processes are further discussed. The authors thank the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the scope of the strategic funding of UID/BIO/04469/2013 unit, COMPETE 2020 (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-006684) and the project RECI/BBB-EBI/0179/2012 (FCOMP-01-0124-FEDER-027462) and BioTecNorte operation (NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000004) funded by the European Regional Development Fund under the scope of Norte2020 - Programa Operacional Regional do Norte. Minimal free resolution for points on surfaces

    Get PDF
A long-standing problem in Algebraic Geometry and Commutative Algebra is to determine the minimal graded free resolution of a 0- dimensional scheme Z in Pn or in an arbitrary projective variety X. In [18], M. Musta ¸ta (1998) predicted the graded Betti numbers of ˘ the minimal free resolution of a general set of distinct points Z in X. In this paper, we state a refined version of Musta ¸ta’s con- ˘ jecture (MRC) and we predict the existence of a non-empty open subset U ⊂ Hilbs (X) such that any [Z] ∈ U has a minimal graded free resolution without ghost terms (WMRC). In this paper, we are going to prove: (1) for any s d+3 3 − 1 there exists a d+2 2 - dimensional family of irreducible generically smooth surfaces of degree d in P3 satisfying the WMRC for s; and (2) any smooth cubic surface satisfies the MRC for any s 1

Reducibility of Punctual Hilbert Schemes of Cone Varieties

    No full text
In this short note we show that for any pair of positive integers (d, n) with n > 2 and d > 1 or n = 2 and d > 4, there always exist projective varieties X ⊆ ℙN of dimension n and degree d and an integer s0 such that Hilbs(X) is reducible for all s ≥ s0. X will be a projective cone in ℙN over an arbitrary projective variety Y ⊆ ℙN-1. In particular, we show that, opposite to the case of smooth surfaces, there exist projective surfaces with a single isolated singularity which have reducible Hilbert scheme of points. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC

n-Dimensional Fano varieties of wild representation type

    No full text
The aim of this work is to contribute to the classification of projective varieties according to their representation type, providing examples of n-dimensional varieties of wild representation type, for arbitrary n 2. More precisely, we prove that all Fano blow-ups of Pn at a finite number of points are of wild representation type exhibiting families of dimension of order r2 of simple (hence, indecomposable) ACM rank r vector bundles for any r n. In the two dimensional case, the vector bundles that we construct are moreover Ulrich bundles and μ-stable with respect to certain ample divisor
