    Après une présentation de la situation et de la géologie des massifs de péridotite et des conditions de gisement et d'exploitation ancienne ou récente des garniérite, un premier essai de classification des différentes morphologies est tenté à partir de l'imagerie Spot. Les grandes perturbations tropicales (cyclones ou sécheresses pluriannuelles), qui conditionnent le régime hydrologique des rivières de Nouvelle-Calédonie, et les différentes phases de l'activité minière sont mises en correspondance avec les variations des exportations de matières, mesurées sur les bassins de la Pouembout et de la Ouenghi. L'analyse des imageries satellitaires et aériennes permet par ailleurs de montrer l'évolution des morphologies fluviales et littorales (méandres de la Thio, évolution des deltas de la Thio et de la Ouenghi). De ces bilans et analyses et de l'examen de quelques situations, il ressort que les engravements de certaines rivières ne peuvent que se poursuivre même si les conditions d'exploitation ont profondément changé et ne sont pas à l'origine de toutes les pollutions.     Confronté, dès 1732, à l’interdiction de mettre en scène ses oratorios bibliques, Haendel va développer des stratégies musicales afin d’animer une scène désormais figée. Par un jeu d’échos, de reprises et de citations, il va puiser, dans certains ouvrages de ses contemporains, mais aussi dans ses propres œuvres, tout un matériau musical, souvent très politiquement marqué, et donner ainsi à ses ‘sacred dramas’ l’épaisseur, à la fois dramatique et idéologique, qui en fait des ouvrages véritablement nationaux.Being forbidden in 1732 to actually stage his biblical dramas, Handel had to think in terms of musical stategy so as to animate these otherwise oddly still dramatic perfomances. Relying on echoes and quotations, he ‘recycled’ some of his contemporaries’ works, and also some of his own, and thus used an often highly political musical material in order to provide his biblical oratorios with both a dramatic and ideological density which truly turned them into a nation’s music

    Membrane protein degradation is intrinsic to vacuole fusion

    In eukaryotic cells, integral membrane protein (IMP) turnover is an important contributor to cell physiology. Whereas the only known mechanism for IMP degradation is the multivesicular body (MVB) pathway, there are examples of IMPs that eschew this pathway and travel directly to the vacuole surface, suggesting that a second mechanism acts at the vacuole. Previously, it was shown that homotypic vacuole fusion yields an intralumenal membrane fragment within the fusion product, providing the cell with a unique opportunity to internalize (and thus, degrade) a portion of vacuolar membrane and its protein cargoes. Based on this result, we hypothesized that vacuole IMPs are sorted for internalization during the sub-reactions that lead to vacuole fusion. Using epifluorescence microscopy, I confirmed that Fth1-GFP and Ybt1-GFP localize exclusively to the vacuole membrane, and are sorted into, or out of, respectively, the membrane domain that is internalized upon homotypic vacuole fusion. Additionally, I demonstrated that Mup1, a surface methionine transporter, colonizes the vacuole limiting membrane upon disruption of the MVB pathway, and also becomes internalized during homotypic vacuole fusion. This study provides the first evidence of a novel selective IMP degradation mechanism, which works independently or complementarily to the MVB pathway. Further studies are required to confirm whether vacuole IMPs are sorted based on their ubiquitylation status (as in the MVB pathway), or whether the vacuole fusion protein machinery has a role within this process

    The hypothesis that the energy-momentum tensor of ordinary matter is not conserved separately, leads to a non-adiabatic expansion and, in many cases, to an Universe older than usual. This may provide a solution for the entropy and age problems of the Standard Cosmological Model. We consider two different theories of this type, and we perform a perturbative analysis, leading to analytical expressions for the evolution of gravitational waves, rotational modes and density perturbations.     Metabolic modelling in a dynamic evolutionary framework predicts adaptive diversification of bacteria in a long-term evolution experiment

    Background: Predicting adaptive trajectories is a major goal of evolutionary biology and useful for practical applications. Systems biology has enabled the development of genome-scale metabolic models. However, analysing these models via flux balance analysis (FBA) cannot predict many evolutionary outcomes including adaptive diversification, whereby an ancestral lineage diverges to fill multiple niches. Here we combine in silico evolution with FBA and apply this modelling framework, evoFBA, to a long-term evolution experiment with Escherichia coli. Results: Simulations predicted the adaptive diversification that occurred in one experimental population and generated hypotheses about the mechanisms that promoted coexistence of the diverged lineages. We experimentally tested and, on balance, verified these mechanisms, showing that diversification involved niche construction and character displacement through differential nutrient uptake and altered metabolic regulation. Conclusion: The evoFBA framework represents a promising new way to model biochemical evolution, one that can generate testable predictions about evolutionary and ecosystem-level outcomes
