    Antiviral activities of Boletus edulis, Pleurotus ostreatus and Lentinus edodes extracts and polysaccharide fractions against Herpes simplex virus type 1

    Deposited with permissionAntiviral properties of water and methanol extracts from Lentinus edodes, Boletus edulis and Pleurotus ostreatus were evaluated against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). Pre-treatment of Vero cells with 75 mg·ml-1 water extracts before virus addition, inhibited 60% of the virus infection and its addition during the virus adsorption period inhibited it up to 80%. Moreover, the mushrooms water extracts were able to significantly inhibit the in vitro virus replication, showing the concentration of a substance required to reduce plaque number in Vero cells by 50% (IC50) values from 26.69 mg·ml-1 to 35.12 mg·ml-1. Methanol extracts exhibited a lower antiviral activity in all cases. In order to identify the type of compounds responsible for the antiviral activity, the low molecular weight (LMW) and high molecular weight (HMW) fractions were evaluated. The activity was found to correlate with the β-glucans present in the polysaccharide fractions, which showed higher antiviral activity than the complete water extracts except for B. edulis where other compounds (probably chitin-binding lectins) might have contributed to the observed activity.This work was also supported by the ALIBIRD-CM S2009/AGR-1469 regional program from the Comunidad de Madrid (Spain

    Enhancing anti-oxidant activities of liver pâté by Boletus edulis supplementation

    The anti-oxidant properties of liver pâtés might be enhanced by adding specific bioactive ingredients such as Boletus edulis mushrooms. Water- and methanol-soluble fractions of supplemented pâtés showed higher 2,2′-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl scavenging activities than control samples. B. edulis supplementation resulted in lower EC50 but only up to 5% (w/w). The high anti-oxidant activity observed in supplemented pâtés was stable during 30 storage days and decreased after 60 days but still it was higher than control pâtés and did not influence lipid oxidation. Addition of dried water or methanol preparations extracted from the mushroom did not improve the anti-oxidant activity observed when the complete fruiting body was utilized. Ergosterol-related compounds and ergotioneine were involved, but they were not exclusively responsible of the high anti-oxidant activity observed, phenolic compounds might be involved too.University of Guadalajara (Jalisco, México) is acknowledged for the financial support granting to A.C.     The Impact of Aqueous Extracts of Verbesina sphaerocephala and Verbesina fastigiata on Germination and Growth in Solanum lycopersicum and Cucumis sativus Seedlings

    The use of extracts derived from different plants has gained popularity as an alternative option to manage weeds and support phenological development in plants. One of the main problems facing agricultural production is the intensive application of chemical fertilizers that harm the environment. This study investigated the biostimulant effects of the aqueous extracts of Verbesinasphaerocephala and Verbesinafastigiata on the germination and growth of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and American cucumber (Cucumis sativus) seedlings. The aqueous extracts of both species of Verbesina were tested at concentrations of 0.5 and 1%. Seed germination and seedling development under nursery conditions were evaluated. The seed germination percentage was reduced in all treatments with the extracts of both Verbesina species when compared to that of the control treatment, which was considered an allelopathic effect. However, seedling growth in pots showed different behavior, with the extracts beneficially affecting certain agronomic variables, such as root and leaf length. The results suggest potential uses for V. sphaerocephala and V. fastigiata extracts, although a greater range of action may be experienced through the effects of certain molecules on weed growth. Additional studies with chemical approaches are necessary to better direct the uses and applications of Verbesina biomolecules, as they also functioned as growth promoters

    Qualitative Identification of Secondary Metabolites and Determination of the Toxicity of Extracts Obtained from the Flower of Kalanchoe Pinnata

    Kalanchoe pinnata, also known as air leaf or life leaf, is a plant used in traditional medicine in different world regions. In Mexico, it is included in the Atlas de la Medicina Tradicional Mexicana with a wide variety of applications, such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antihistamine, among others. However, neither a secondary metabolite profile of the flower has been reported nor information on its possible toxicity. The latter is the purpose of this work. A phytochemical profile of extracts with solvents of different polarity (aqueous, methanol, ethanol, and ether) was carried out. In this profile, the structural compounds could be qualitatively determined by chemical reactions, and some changes in coloring or precipitation were observed. The acute toxicity test of the extracts was performed with an aquatic organism, Artemia sp, and a terrestrial organism Eisenia foetida, as well as the evaluation of the antioxidant capacity of the extracts in the organism of Eisenia foetida. The ABTS radical method and TROLOX were applied as synthetic antioxidants for the evaluation of the inhibition percentage. Most important secondary metabolites were qualitatively identified in the extracts of K. pinnata flowers. Mainly in the alcoholic extracts (methanol and ethanol) tannins, alkaloids, and flavonols were found. As mentioned above, they are reported to have toxicological effects. The toxicity and antioxidant activity tests confirm the preliminary results obtained in the identification of secondary metabolites. It is therefore concluded that the flower of Kalanchoe pinnata contains secondary metabolites that may be of great therapeutic interest
