Cosmogenic gamma-rays and neutrinos constrain UHECR source models

We use CRPropa 3 to show how the expected cosmogenic neutrino and gamma-ray spectra depend on the maximum energy of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) at their sources, on the spectral index at injection and on the chemical composition of UHECRs. The isotropic diffuse gamma-ray background measured by Fermi/LAT is already close to touching upon a model with co-moving source evolution and with the chemical composition, spectral index and maximum acceleration energy optimized to provide the best fit to the UHECR spectrum and composition measured by the Pierre Auger Collaboration. Additionally, the detectable fraction of protons present at the highest energies in UHECRs, for experiments with sensitivities to the single-flavor neutrino flux at 1\sim1 EeV in the range of 108\sim 10^{-8} - 101010^{-10} GeV cm2^{-2} s1^{-1} sr1^{-1}, is shown as a function of the evolution of UHECR sources. Experiments that reach this sensitivity will be able to significantly constrain the proton fraction for realistic source evolution models.Comment: Proc. 35th ICRC, Busan, South Korea, PoS(ICRC2017)56

An analysis of the sensitivity of gaussian and mexican hat wavelet family filters to the detection of point sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays was performed. A source embedded in a background was simulated and the number of events and amplitude of this source was varied aiming to check the sensitivity of the method to detect faint sources with low statistic of events.Comment: Proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Strong Electromagnetic Fields and Neutron Stars (Havana, Cuba, 2011). 6 pages, 4 figure

Finding the origin of domestication of cupuaçu requires more than genomics

    Get PDF
Colli-Silva et al.1 recently proposed that cupuaçu (Theobroma grandiflorum) was domesticated in northwestern Amazonia as a selection from its sister species, cupuí (T. subincanum). This proposal ignores long-term research in taxonomy, botany, biogeography, and genetics about Theobroma, including cupuaçu. Our review of the research that was ignored and of Colli-Silva et al.’s results demonstrates that cupuaçu is a valid species, as they now agree2, but cupuí may be paraphyletic, the distribution of wild cupuaçu was not included in their samples so the origin of domestication continues unknown, precolonial archaeology lacks remains that can be attributed to either species, historical linguistics indicates that the term cupuaçu references the species’ wild distribution and is a recent introduction in northwestern Amazonia, history suggests that cupuaçu started to be domesticated during the last 100-200 years, and the genomics results are not about the domestication of cupuaçu because it is a valid species and its wild distribution was not sampled

A biorefinery approach to the biomass of the seaweed Undaria pinnatifida (Harvey Suringar, 1873): obtaining phlorotannins-enriched extracts for wound healing

Brown seaweeds are recognized sources of compounds with a wide range of properties and applications. Within these compounds, phlorotannins are known to possess several bioactivities (e.g., antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial) with potential to improve wound healing. To obtain phlorotannins enriched extracts from Undaria pinnatifida, a biorefinery was set using lowcost industry-friendly methodologies, such as sequential solid–liquid extraction and liquid–liquid extraction. The obtained extracts were screened for their antioxidant and antimicrobial activity against five common wound pathogens and for their anti-inflammatory potential. The ethanolic wash fraction (wE100) had the highest antioxidant activity (114.61 +- 10.04 mmol mg-1 extract by Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 6.56 +-1.13mMeq. Fe II mg-1 extract by and Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP)), acting efficiently against Gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria, and showing a nitric oxide production inhibition over 47% when used at 0.01 ug mL-1. NMR and FTIR chemical characterization suggested that phlorotannins are present. Obtained fraction wE100 proved to be a promising candidate for further inclusion as wound healing agents, while the remaining fractions analyzed are potential sources for other biotechnological applications, giving emphasis to a biorefinery and circular economy framework to add value to this seaweed and the industry.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Quantitative chemical mapping of InGaN quantum wells from calibrated high-angle annular dark field micrographs

We present a simple and robust method to acquire quantitative maps of compositional fluctuations in nanostructures from low magnification high-angle annular dark field (HAADF) micrographs calibrated by energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) mode. We show that a nonuniform background in HAADF-STEM micrographs can be eliminated, to a first approximation, by use of a suitable analytic function. The uncertainty in probe position when collecting an EDX spectrum renders the calibration of HAADF-STEM micrographs indirect, and a statistical approach has been developed to determine the position with confidence. Our analysis procedure, presented in a flowchart to facilitate the successful implementation of the method by users, was applied to discontinuous InGaN/GaN quantum wells in order to obtain quantitative determinations of compositional fluctuations on the nanoscale

Simulation of the Perfusion of Contrast Agent Used in Cardiac Magnetic Resonance: A Step Toward Non-invasive Cardiac Perfusion Quantification

This work presents a new mathematical model to describe cardiac perfusion in the myocardium as acquired by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) perfusion exams. The combination of first pass (or contrast-enhanced CMR) and late enhancement CMR is a widely used non-invasive exam that can identify abnormal perfused regions of the heart via the use of a contrast agent (CA). The exam provides important information to the diagnosis, management, and prognosis of ischemia and infarct: perfusion on different regions, the status of microvascular structures, the presence of fibrosis, and the relative volume of extracellular space. This information is obtained by inferring the spatiotemporal dynamics of the contrast in the myocardial tissue from the acquired images. The evaluation of these physiological parameters plays an important role in the assessment of myocardial viability. However, the nature of cardiac physiology poses great challenges in the estimation of these parameters. Briefly, these are currently estimated qualitatively via visual inspection of images and comparison of relative brightness between different regions of the heart. Therefore, there is a great urge for techniques that can help to quantify cardiac perfusion. In this work, we propose a new mathematical model based on multidomain flow in porous media. The model is based on a system of partial differential equations. Darcy's law is used to obtain the pressure and velocity distribution. CA dynamics is described by reaction-diffusion-advection equations in the intravascular space and in the interstitial space. The interaction of fibrosis and the CA is also considered. The new model treats the domains as anisotropic media and imposes a closed loop of intravascular flow, which is necessary to reproduce the recirculation of the CA. The model parameters were adjusted to reproduce clinical data. In addition, the model was used to simulate different scenarios: normal perfusion; endocardial ischemia due to stenosis in a coronary artery in the epicardium; and myocardial infarct. Therefore, the computational model was able to correlate anatomical features, stenosis and the presence of fibrosis, with functional ones, cardiac perfusion. Altogether, the results suggest that the model can support the process of non-invasive cardiac perfusion quantification

Resting spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity and cardiac autonomic control in anabolic androgenic steroid users

OBJECTIVES: Misuse of anabolic androgenic steroids in athletes is a strategy used to enhance strength and skeletal muscle hypertrophy. However, its abuse leads to an imbalance in muscle sympathetic nerve activity, increased vascular resistance, and increased blood pressure. However, the mechanisms underlying these alterations are still unknown. Therefore, we tested whether anabolic androgenic steroids could impair resting baroreflex sensitivity and cardiac sympathovagal control. In addition, we evaluate pulse wave velocity to ascertain the arterial stiffness of large vessels. METHODS: Fourteen male anabolic androgenic steroid users and 12 nonusers were studied. Heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate were recorded. Baroreflex sensitivity was estimated by the sequence method, and cardiac autonomic control by analysis of the R-R interval. Pulse wave velocity was measured using a noninvasive automatic device. RESULTS: Mean spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity, baroreflex sensitivity to activation of the baroreceptors, and baroreflex sensitivity to deactivation of the baroreceptors were significantly lower in users than in nonusers. In the spectral analysis of heart rate variability, high frequency activity was lower, while low frequency activity was higher in users than in nonusers. Moreover, the sympathovagal balance was higher in users. Users showed higher pulse wave velocity than nonusers showing arterial stiffness of large vessels. Single linear regression analysis showed significant correlations between mean blood pressure and baroreflex sensitivity and pulse wave velocity. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide evidence for lower baroreflex sensitivity and sympathovagal imbalance in anabolic androgenic steroid users. Moreover, anabolic androgenic steroid users showed arterial stiffness. Together, these alterations might be the mechanisms triggering the increased blood pressure in this population
