A novel approach for quality control system using sensor fusion of infrared and visual image processing for laser sealing of food containers
This paper presents a new mechatronic approach of using infrared thermography combined with image processing for the quality control of a laser sealing process for food containers. The suggested approach uses an on-line infrared system to assess the heat distribution within the container seal in order to guarantee the integrity of the process. Visual image processing is then used for quality assurance to guarantee optimum sealing. The results described in this paper show examples of the capability of the condition monitoring system to detect faults in the sealing process. The results found indicate that the suggested approach could form an effective quality control and assurance system
The mixed problem for the Laplacian in Lipschitz domains
We consider the mixed boundary value problem or Zaremba's problem for the
Laplacian in a bounded Lipschitz domain in R^n. We specify Dirichlet data on
part of the boundary and Neumann data on the remainder of the boundary. We
assume that the boundary between the sets where we specify Dirichlet and
Neumann data is a Lipschitz surface. We require that the Neumann data is in L^p
and the Dirichlet data is in the Sobolev space of functions having one
derivative in L^p for some p near 1. Under these conditions, there is a unique
solution to the mixed problem with the non-tangential maximal function of the
gradient of the solution in L^p of the boundary. We also obtain results with

The measurement of scintillation light from the lead tungstate crystals of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) poses a substantial technical challenge, particularly in the endcap regions, where the radiation levels are highest. The photodetectors must be fast, sensitive, radiationhard, and operate with significant internal gain in a magnetic field of 4 Tesla. Coping with metastatic melanoma: the last year of life.
BackgroundFew longitudinal studies have concurrently investigated cognitive appraisal, coping and psychological adjustment in patients with terminal cancer. This study aimed to (i) consider patterns of change in these variables during the last year of life and (ii) consider covariates associated with patients' psychological adjustment.Methods and patientsQuestionnaires were sent to a cohort of stage IV melanoma patients seen at the Sydney Melanoma Unit between 1991 and 1996, approximately every 3 months, for up to 2 years. A sub-sample of 110 patients completed at least one questionnaire in the last year of life. Repeated measures linear regression was used to model cognitive appraisal, coping and psychological adjustment.ResultsIn the last year of life, patients' cognitive appraisal of their disease remained relatively stable, whereas their use of active coping strategies increased (p=0. 04). There was some deterioration in psychological adjustment, particularly in patients' ability to minimize the impact of cancer on daily life (p=0.03), but this effect did not remain significant when patients' level of tiredness was included in the model. Cognitive appraisal, coping style and quality of life indicators were all associated with psychological adjustment.ConclusionThese findings suggest that while patients work hard to actively cope with their disease, they experience increasing levels of tiredness, and deterioration in their mood and ability to function in their daily lives
Genetic Algorithm with Optimal Recombination for the Asymmetric Travelling Salesman Problem
We propose a new genetic algorithm with optimal recombination for the
asymmetric instances of travelling salesman problem. The algorithm incorporates
several new features that contribute to its effectiveness: (i) Optimal
recombination problem is solved within crossover operator. (ii) A new mutation
operator performs a random jump within 3-opt or 4-opt neighborhood. (iii)
Greedy constructive heuristic of W.Zhang and 3-opt local search heuristic are
used to generate the initial population. A computational experiment on TSPLIB
instances shows that the proposed algorithm yields competitive results to other

NF1 is a tumor predisposition syndrome that primarily affect the peripheral and central nervous systems via the impact of haploinsufficiency upon neural crest lineage cells including Schwann cells, melanocytes, fibroblasts, etc. NF1 can further lead to pathology of the skin, bones, visual system, and cardiovascular system, all of which can drastically reduce a patientâs quality of life (QOL). This review provides a comprehensive examination of the many specialties required for the care of patients with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1). We delve into the pathogenesis and clinical presentation of NF1, highlighting its diverse manifestations and the challenges they pose in management. The review underscores the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to NF1, emphasizing how such an approach can significantly improve patient outcomes and overall QOL. Central to this approach is the role of the NF expert, who guides a multidisciplinary team (MDT) comprising healthcare professionals from many areas of expertise. The MDT collaboratively addresses the multifaceted needs of NF1 patients, ensuring comprehensive and personalized care. Documentation of a fully integrated epidemiological-demographic-macroeconomic model of Malaria: The case of Ghana
We develop a novel and fully integrated epidemiological-demographic-macroeconomic EDM-malaria simulation model framework for modelling of P. falciparum malaria transmission in Ghana. Our model framework represents a milestone, as the first fully integrated EDM model framework for any type of infectious disease. The complex specification and integration of regional epidemiological-demographic models within a malaria-focussed macroeconomic Computable General Equilibrium model is fully described and documented, and ideas are outlined for future applications to investigate the interplay between macroeconomic and health disease burdens, to measure the health and economic impacts of economic growth and malaria interventions, and to study the importance (or lack thereof) of the general omission of proper epidemiological underpinnings and integration of economic incentive feedback effects in the existing literature on macroeconomic assessment of infectious disease
Quantification of mesoscale variability and geometrical reconstruction of a textile
Automated image analysis of textile surfaces allowed determination and quantification of intrinsic yarn path variabilities in a 2/2 twill weave during the lay-up process. The yarn paths were described in terms of waves and it was found that the frequencies are similar in warp and weft directions and hardly affected by introduced yarn path deformations. The most significant source of fabric variability was introduced during handling before cutting. These resulting systematic deformations will need to be considered when designing or analysing a composite component. An automated method for three dimensional reconstruction of the analysed lay-up was implemented in TexGen which will allow virtual testing of components in the future

www.map.ox.ac.uk/Historic levels of funding have reduced the global burden of malaria in recent years. Questions remain,
however, as to whether scaling up interventions, in parallel with economic growth, has made malaria elimination more
likely today than previously. The consequences of âtrying but failingâ to eliminate malaria are also uncertain. Reduced
malaria exposure decreases the acquisition of semi-immunity during childhood, a necessary phase of the immunological
transition that occurs on the pathway to malaria elimination. During this transitional period, the risk of malaria resurgence
increases as proportionately more individuals across all age-groups are less able to manage infections by immune
response alone. We developed a robust model that integrates the effects of malaria transmission, demography, and
macroeconomics in the context of Plasmodium falciparum malaria within a hyperendemic environment. We analyzed the
potential for existing interventions, alongside economic development, to achieve malaria elimination. Simulation results
indicate that a 2% increase in future economic growth will increase the US7.2 billion, although increasing regional insecticide-treated net coverage rates by 25% will lower
malaria reproduction numbers by just 9%, reduce population-wide morbidity by â0.1%, and reduce prevalence from 54%
to 46% by 2034. As scaling up current malaria control tools, combined with economic growth, will be insufficient to
interrupt malaria transmission in Ghana, high levels of malaria control should be maintained and investment in research
and development should be increased to maintain the gains of the past decade and to minimize the risk of resurgence, as
