In the second stage of this R and D-theme, the project team worked out different icebreaking tanker designs in the range of 50.000 tdw and examined the technical requirements and the possibilities and economics of different transport concepts in specific Arctic regions. Scope of research acitivities: Development and optimisation of the ship lines for 3 different primary operational modes. Model tests in open water, head seas, level ice and ice floes incl. manoeuvrability trials. Proving the possibilities of icebreaker assistance. Transport analysis considering different transport concepts, economic conclusions. Comparisons of the demands of the different Classification Societies. Special requirements of equipment and accommodation, necessary efforts to assure safety for ship and crew under inhuman Arctic environmental conditions. Technical and economical comparison of propulsion and power plant systems. Analysis of ship structure and ship strength incl. definition of the ice belt, examination of different framing systems and consequences of different damage and beaching cases. Corrosion protection.
