Constraining the provenance of the Stonehenge 'Altar Stone': Evidence from automated mineralogy and U–Pb zircon age dating

The Altar Stone at Stonehenge is a greenish sandstone thought to be of Late Silurian-Devonian (‘Old Red Sandstone’) age. It is classed as one of the bluestone lithologies which are considered to be exotic to the Salisbury Plain environ, most of which are derived from the Mynydd Preseli, in west Wales. However, no Old Red Sandstone rocks crop out in the Preseli; instead a source in the Lower Old Red Sandstone Cosheston Subgroup at Mill Bay to the south of the Preseli, has been proposed. More recently, on the basis of detailed petrography, a source for the Altar Stone much further to the east, towards the Wales-England border, has been suggested. Quantitative analyses presented here compare mineralogical data from proposed Stonehenge Altar Stone debris with samples from Milford Haven at Mill Bay, as well as with a second sandstone type found at Stonehenge which is Lower Palaeozoic in age. The Altar Stone samples have contrasting modal mineralogies to the other two sandstone types, especially in relation to the percentages of its calcite, kaolinite and barite cements. Further differences between the Altar Stone sandstone and the Cosheston Subgroup sandstone are seen when their contained zircons are compared, showing differing morphologies and U-Pb age dates having contrasting populations. These data confirm that Mill Bay is not the source of the Altar Stone with the abundance of kaolinite in the Altar Stone sample suggesting a source further east, towards the Wales-England border. The disassociation of the Altar Stone and Milford Haven undermines the hypothesis that the bluestones, including the Altar Stone, were transported from west Wales by sea up the Bristol Channel and adds further credence to a totally land-based route, possibly along a natural routeway leading from west Wales to the Severn estuary and beyond. This route may well have been significant in prehistory, raising the possibility that the Altar Stone was added en route to the assemblage of Preseli bluestones taken to Stonehenge around or shortly before 3000 BC. Recent strontium isotope analysis of human and animal bones from Stonehenge, dating to the beginning of its first construction stage around 3000 BC, are consistent with the suggestion of connectivity between this western region of Britain and Salisbury Plain. This study appears to be the first application of quantitative automated mineralogy in the provenancing of archaeological lithic material and highlights the potential value of automated mineralogy in archaeological provenancing investigations, especially when combined with complementary techniques, in the present case zircon age dating

The novel object recognition memory: neurobiology, test procedure, and its modifications

    Get PDF
Animal models of memory have been considered as the subject of many scientific publications at least since the beginning of the twentieth century. In humans, memory is often accessed through spoken or written language, while in animals, cognitive functions must be accessed through different kind of behaviors in many specific, experimental models of memory and learning. Among them, the novel object recognition test can be evaluated by the differences in the exploration time of novel and familiar objects. Its application is not limited to a field of research and enables that various issues can be studied, such as the memory and learning, the preference for novelty, the influence of different brain regions in the process of recognition, and even the study of different drugs and their effects. This paper describes the novel object recognition paradigms in animals, as a valuable measure of cognition. The purpose of this work was to review the neurobiology and methodological modifications of the test commonly used in behavioral pharmacology

Novel Sulfated Polysaccharides Disrupt Cathelicidins, Inhibit RAGE and Reduce Cutaneous Inflammation in a Mouse Model of Rosacea

Rosacea is a common disfiguring skin disease of primarily Caucasians characterized by central erythema of the face, with telangiectatic blood vessels, papules and pustules, and can produce skin thickening, especially on the nose of men, creating rhinophyma. Rosacea can also produce dry, itchy eyes with irritation of the lids, keratitis and corneal scarring. The cause of rosacea has been proposed as over-production of the cationic cathelicidin peptide LL-37.We tested a new class of non-anticoagulant sulfated anionic polysaccharides, semi-synthetic glycosaminoglycan ethers (SAGEs) on key elements of the pathogenic pathway leading to rosacea. SAGEs were anti-inflammatory at ng/ml, including inhibition of polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) proteases, P-selectin, and interaction of the receptor for advanced glycation end-products (RAGE) with four representative ligands. SAGEs bound LL-37 and inhibited interleukin-8 production induced by LL-37 in cultured human keratinocytes. When mixed with LL-37 before injection, SAGEs prevented the erythema and PMN infiltration produced by direct intradermal injection of LL-37 into mouse skin. Topical application of a 1% (w/w) SAGE emollient to overlying injected skin also reduced erythema and PMN infiltration from intradermal LL-37.Anionic polysaccharides, exemplified by SAGEs, offer potential as novel mechanism-based therapies for rosacea and by extension other LL-37-mediated and RAGE-ligand driven skin diseases

A transmission electron microscope study of white mica crystallite size distribution in a mudstone to slate transitional sequence, North Wales, UK

High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) measurements of the thickness of white mica crystallites were made on three pelite samples that represented a prograde transition from diagenetic mudstone though anchizonal slate to epizonal slate. Crystallite thickness, measured normal to (001), increases as grade increases, whereas the XRD measured 10 Å peak-profile, the Kubler index, decreases. The mode of the TEM-measured size population can be correlated with the effective crystallite size N (001) determined by XRD. The results indicate that the Kubler index of white mica crystallinity measures changes in the crystallite size population that result from prograde increases in the size of coherent X-ray scattering domains. These changes conform to the Scherrer relationship between XRD peak broadening and small crystallite size. Lattice ‘strain’ broadening is relatively unimportant, and is confined to white mica populations in the diagenetic mudstone. Rapid increases in crystallite size occur in the anchizone, coincident with cleavage development. Changes in the distribution of crystallite thickness with advancing grade and cleavage development are characteristic of grain-growth by Ostwald ripening. The Kubler index rapidly loses sensitivity as an indicator of metapelitic grade within the epizone.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/47293/1/410_2004_Article_BF00306406.pd

    The Brecon Beacons

    Get PDF
The Brecon Beacons of central and southern Wales offer the opportunity to explore a range of geomorphological processes, particularly those relating to the rapid climate changes associated with the period subsequent to the Last Glacial Maximum. The mountains present some of the best preserved evidence in the British Isles of the interplay between glacial, periglacial and paraglacial processes, associated with conditions of marginal glaciation, and provide the most southerly evidence of Younger Dryas/Loch Lomond Stadial glaciation of Britain. The absence of evidence for landscape evolution in the region prior to the Last Glacial Maximum has recently begun to be addressed through insights derived from the subterranean geomorphology of limestone found in the south of the region. As one of the key sites of the early Industrial Revolution, the Brecon Beacons also preserve a unique landscape of anthropogenic (or even anthropocenic) geomorphology associated with large scale coal and iron extraction
