Social capital, local institutions, and cooperation between firms
There are many different reasons behind cooperation between firms and many possible interpretations are assumed to be based on an assessment of endogenous benefits of collective action directly generated by taking part in a joint project. This paper attempts at verifying the interpretative capacity of models analysing the cooperation between firms using not only technological or organisational factors and rivalry between firms, but also some proxy variables of social capital, of experience accumulation in collective action and of institutional capacity for initiative. The specific aim of our work is hence that of providing an interpretation of Italian inter-province differentials in the propensity of inter-firm cooperation.35
Comparing BDD and SAT based techniques for model checking Chaum's Dining Cryptographers Protocol
We analyse different versions of the Dining Cryptographers protocol by means of automatic verification via model checking. Specifically we model the protocol in terms of a network of communicating automata and verify that the protocol meets the anonymity requirements specified. Two different model checking techniques (ordered binary decision diagrams and SAT-based bounded model checking) are evaluated and compared to verify the protocols
Effect of Ferric Sodium EDTA administration, in combination with vitamin C, folic acid, copper gluconate, zinc gluconate and selenomethionine, on cardiovascular risk evaluation: exploration of the HRV frequency domain
diseases. Using the Heart Rate Variability (HRV) analysis is possible to provide an evaluation of the safety and the
effectiveness of intervention.
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Ferric Sodium EDTA in combination with vitamin C, folic acid, copper
gluconate, zinc gluconate and selenomethionine (Ferachel forteÂź) 2 tabs/day for 24 days in elderly patients with secondary
anaemia, by exploring the HRV frequency domain.
Methods: In 45 elderly patients with secondary anaemia and/or low-moderate kidney failure, laboratory values after
administration of Ferric Sodium EDTA, 2 tabs a day, in combination with vitamin C, folic acid, copper gluconate, zinc
gluconate and selenomethionine (Ferachel forteÂź) for 24 days (N=16 patients) or ferrous gluconate 63 mg/day added to
saline solution, administered using intravenous access during the hospitalization period of 15 ± 5 days (N=29 patients)
were evaluated. Also, ECG signals and bioelectrical impedance (BIA) were measured.
Results: Oral iron supplementation with Ferric Sodium EDTA, in combination with vitamin C, folic acid, copper gluconate,
zinc gluconate and selenomethionine (Ferachel forteÂź) confirmed to be effective and safe about the cardiovascular risk
in old patients. This study showed the real superiority of the oral administration about the cardiovascular risk in elderly
patients in comparison with intravenous administration of ferrous gluconate.
Conclusion: This study confirms that Ferric Sodium EDTA combination (Ferachel forteÂź) can be a valid alternative to ferrous
gluconate intravenous therapy (gold standard) in the treatment of secondary anaemia in elderly patients. In fact, during
the treatment, efficacy results have been maintained without statistically significant variations about cardiovascular risk,
evaluated by exploring the HRV frequency domain
Tuning Knobs for the NLC Final Focus
Compensation of optics errors at the Interaction Point (IP) is essential for
maintaining maximum luminosity at the NLC. Several correction systems (knobs)
using the Final Focus sextupoles have been designed to provide orthogonal
compensation of linear and the second order optics aberrations at IP. Tuning
effects of these knobs on the 250 GeV beam were verified using tracking
simulations.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Effect of insulin glargine on cardiovascular risk analysed by mean HRV
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is an insidious disease that is increasingly present in geriatric population [1]. The greatest difficulty is represented by glycaemic control in geriatric patients often not very compliant with diet therapy and drug therapy. A new insulin glargine 300 units/ml formulation seems im- prove patient compliance due to the lower volume of insulin to be injected and improved glycaemic control over 24 hours. The HRV signal, derived from digital electrocardiographic recording, is the simplest and most imme- diate analysis that consists in calculating some temporal parameters [2]. HRV is a simple statistics derived from beat-beat intervals of sinus origin expressed as units of time in milliseconds. Data in the literature indicate that a decrease in HRV, measured with time domain analysis, denotes a worse prognosis and/or an increased risk of mortality in patients with heart disease, especially in the elderly ones
Inverse Spin Hall Effect and Anomalous Hall Effect in a Two-Dimensional Electron Gas
We study the coupled dynamics of spin and charge currents in a
two-dimensional electron gas in the transport diffusive regime. For systems
with inversion symmetry there are established relations between the spin Hall
effect, the anomalous Hall effect and the inverse spin Hall effect. However, in
two-dimensional electron gases of semiconductors like GaAs, inversion symmetry
is broken so that the standard arguments do not apply. We demonstrate that in
the presence of a Rashba type of spin-orbit coupling (broken structural
inversion symmetry) the anomalous Hall effect, the spin Hall and inverse spin
Hall effect are substantially different effects. Furthermore we discuss the
inverse spin Hall effect for a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba and
Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling; our results agree with a recent experiment.Comment: 5 page
Strong RF Focusing for Luminosity Increase
A luminosity of a circular collider can be increased by squeezing the bunch
length at the interaction point (IP). A natural way to decrease the bunch
length is to decrease the momentum compaction factor and/or to increase the RF
voltage. However, in such a way we cannot obtain short bunches with high
currents since wakefields prevent this due to the potential well distortion and
the microwave instability. In present paper we propose to use a strong RF
focusing (with high RF voltage and high momentum compaction factor) to obtain
very short bunches at the IP with progressive bunch elongation towards the RF
cavity. This allows placing the most important impedance generating elements
near the RF cavity where the bunch is longest thus minimizing the effect of the
wakefields.Comment: 6 page
