We report magnetic properties and relative paleointensity (RPI) proxies from a suite of 10 conventional piston cores and Kasten cores from the SW Iberian Margin collected during cruise JC089 of the RSS James Cook in August 2013. Mean sedimentation rates are in the 10-20 cm/kyr range. Age models were acquired by correlation of Ca/Ti and Zr/Sr XRF core-scanning data to L* reflectance from the Cariaco Basin that is, in turn, tied to the Greenland ice-core chronology. The natural remanent magnetization (NRM) is represented by a single magnetization component carried by a low-coercivity mineral (magnetite), although reflectance and bulk magnetic properties indicate the presence of a high-coercivity (hematitic) magnetic phase, possibly from eolian dust. The presence of fine-grained hematite means that the sediments are not ideal for RPI studies, however the detrital hematite does not appear to contribute to the NRM or anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM). In order to test the usefulness of the RPI data, we construct a stack of 12 RPI records from the SW Iberian Margin for the 0-45 ka interval and compare it with a stack of 12 globally distributed marine and lake records, chosen on the basis of mean sedimentation rates (>15 cm/kyr) and superior age models. The two stacks are similar, but different from published RPI stacks, particularly for the 10-30 ka interval, and imply a virtual axial dipole moment (VADM) high at ~15-18 ka followed by a drop in field strength from ~15 to 13 ka. A revised VADM estimate calculated from Greenland 10Be ice-core flux using a contemporary age model is remarkably consistent with the new overall RPI stack, based on Iberian Margin and global RPI records. The elevated atmospheric 14C levels of the last ice age cannot, however, be fully explained by this RPI stack although relative changes such as the long-term drop in atmospheric 14C from 30 to 15 ka are reproduced, supporting the hypothesis of a combined influence of production rate and ocean ventilation on 14C during the last ice age

Forward Symplectic Integrators and the Long Time Phase Error in Periodic Motions

We show that when time-reversible symplectic algorithms are used to solve periodic motions, the energy error after one period is generally two orders higher than that of the algorithm. By use of correctable algorithms, we show that the phase error can also be eliminated two orders higher than that of the integrator. The use of fourth order forward time step integrators can result in sixth order accuracy for the phase error and eighth accuracy in the periodic energy. We study the 1-D harmonic oscillator and the 2-D Kepler problem in great details, and compare the effectiveness of some recent fourth order algorithms.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. E, 29 Page

Competitive abilities of native grasses and non-native (Bothriochloa spp.) grasses

Old World Bluestems (OWB), introduced from Europe and Asia in the 1920s, recently have begun to raise concerns in the Great Plains. Despite suggestion in the late 1950s that OWB were weedy and negatively impacted biological diversity, they were widely introduced throughout the Great Plains for agricultural purposes. Anecdotal evidence suggests that OWB exhibit invasive characteristics that promote competitive exclusion of native species. The objective of our study was to quantify the competitive abilities of two OWB species (Caucasian bluestem; Bothriochloa bladhii (Retz.) S. T. Blake (= Bothriochloa caucasica (Trin.) C. E. Hubb.) and yellow bluestem; Bothriochloa ischaemum (L.) Keng) with three native grass species (big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman), little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium (Michx.) Nash), and sideoats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula (Michx.) Torr.)). A greenhouse target-neighbor study was conducted to assess both interspecific and intraspecific competition. A total of 480 pots (4.4 1) filled with native soil was used with all pair-wise combinations of species and four density treatments (six replications). Vegetative tiller height, above-and belowground biomass were measured at the end of 16 weeks. Both of the OWB significantly inhibited at least one growth parameter of the three native grass species, while most of the native species did not inhibit growth of either OWB species. Growth of B. ischaemum was enhanced when grown in association with 5. scoparium. Based upon the results of our study of OWB competitive superiority and previous research, many of the characteristics possessed by OWB are found to be in common with known invasive species. Hence, we propose that two OWB are competitively superior to three common native prairie species providing them with the ability to invade and threaten the native grasslands of the Central and Southern Great Plains

Magnetic record of deglaciation using FORC-PCA, sortable-silt grain size, and magnetic excursion at 26 ka, from the Rockall Trough (NE Atlantic)

    Get PDF
Core MD04-2822 from the Rockall Trough has apparent sedimentation rates of ~1 m/kyr during the last deglaciation (Termination I). Component magnetization directions indicate a magnetic excursion at 16.3 m depth in the core, corresponding to an age of 26.5 ka, implying an excursion duration of ~350 years. Across Termination I, the mean grain size of sortable silt implies reduced bottom-current velocity in the Younger Dryas and Heinrich Stadial (HS)-21A, and increased velocities during the Bølling-Allerød warm period. Standard bulk magnetic parameters imply fining of magnetic grain size from the mid-Younger Dryas (~12 ka) until ~8 ka. First-order reversal curves (FORCs) were analyzed using ridge extraction to differentiate single domain (SD) from background (detrital) components. Principal component analysis (FORC-PCA) was then used to discriminate three end members corresponding to SD, pseudo-single domain (PSD), and multidomain (MD) magnetite. The fining of bulk magnetic grain size from 12 to 8 ka is due to reduction in concentration of detrital (PSD 1 MD) magnetite, superimposed on a relatively uniform concentration of SD magnetite pro- duced by magnetotactic bacteria. The decrease in PSD1MD magnetite concentration from 12 to 8 ka is synchronized with increase in benthic d13C, and with major (~70 m) regional sea-level rise, and may therefore be related to detrital sources on the shelf that had reduced influence as sea level rose, and to bottom-water reorganization as Northern Source Water (NSW) replaced Southern Source Water (SSW)

Unequal relationships in high and low power distance societies: a comparative study of tutor - student role relations in Britain and China

    Get PDF
This study investigated people's conceptions of an unequal role relationship in two different types of society: a high power distance society and a low power distance society. The study focuses on the role relationship of tutor and student. British and Chinese tutors and postgraduate students completed a questionnaire that probed their conceptions of degrees of power differential and social distance/closeness in this role relationship. ANOVA results yielded a significant nationality effect for both aspects. Chinese respondents judged the relationship to be closer and to have a greater power differential than did British respondents. Written comments on the questionnaire and interviews with 9 Chinese academics who had experienced both British and Chinese academic environments supported the statistical findings and indicated that there are fundamental ideological differences associated with the differing conceptions. The results are discussed in relation to Western and Asian concepts of leadership and differing perspectives on the compatibility/incompatibility of power and distance/closeness

Southern Greenland glaciation and Western Boundary Undercurrent evolution recorded on Eirik Drift during the late Pliocene intensification of Northern Hemisphere glaciation

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record. We present new sedimentological and environmental magnetic records spanning ~3.2–2.2 Ma, during the intensification of Northern Hemisphere glaciation, from North Atlantic Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Site U1307 on Eirik Drift. Our new datasets and their high-fidelity age control demonstrate that while inland glaciers – and potentially also at times restricted marine-terminating ice-caps – have likely existed on southern Greenland since at least ~3.2 Ma, persistent and extensive marine-terminating glacial margins were only established in this region at 2.72 Ma, ~300 kyr later than in northeastern and eastern Greenland. Despite a dramatic increase in Greenland-sourced ice-rafted debris deposition on Eirik Drift at this time, contemporaneous changes in the bulk magnetic properties of Site U1307 sediments, and a reduction in sediment accumulation rates, suggest a decrease in the delivery of Greenland-sourced glaciofluvial silt, which we attribute to a shift in depositional regime from bottom-current-dominated to glacial-IRD- dominated between ~2.9–2.7 Ma in response to a change in the depth of the flow path of the Western Boundary Undercurrent relative to our study site

Explicit Lie-Poisson integration and the Euler equations

We give a wide class of Lie-Poisson systems for which explicit, Lie-Poisson integrators, preserving all Casimirs, can be constructed. The integrators are extremely simple. Examples are the rigid body, a moment truncation, and a new, fast algorithm for the sine-bracket truncation of the 2D Euler equations.Comment: 7 pages, compile with AMSTEX; 2 figures available from autho

Energy transitions and uncertainty: creating low carbon investment opportunities in the UK electricity sector

    Get PDF
This paper examines how actors in the UK electricity sector are attempting to deliver investment in low carbon generation. Low carbon technologies, because of their relative immaturity, capital intensity and low operational costs, do not readily fit with existing electricity markets and investment templates which were designed for fossil fuel based energy. We analyse key electricity market and infrastructure policies in the UK and highlight how these are aimed at making low carbon technologies ‘investable’ by reducing uncertainty, managing investment risks and repositioning actors within the electricity socio-technical ‘regime’. We argue that our study can inform contemporary debates on the politics and governance of sustainability transitions by empirically investigating the agency of incumbent regime actors in the face of uncertainty and by offering critical insights on the role of markets and finance in shaping socio-technical change
