Spin current swapping and Hanle spin Hall effect in the two dimensional electron gas
We analyze the effect known as "spin current swapping" (SCS) due to
electron-impurity scattering in a uniform spin-polarized two-dimensional
electron gas. In this effect a primary spin current (lower index for
spatial direction, upper index for spin direction) generates a secondary spin
current if , or , with , if . Contrary
to naive expectation, the homogeneous spin current associated with the uniform
drift of the spin polarization in the electron gas does not generate a swapped
spin current by the SCS mechanism. Nevertheless, a swapped spin current will be
generated, if a magnetic field is present, by a completely different mechanism,
namely, the precession of the spin Hall spin current in the magnetic field. We
refer to this second mechanism as Hanle spin Hall effect, and we notice that it
can be observed in an experiment in which a homogeneous drift current is passed
through a uniformly magnetized electron gas. In contrast to this, we show that
an unambiguous observation of SCS requires inhomogeneous spin currents, such as
those that are associated with spin diffusion in a metal, and no magnetic
field. An experimental setup for the observation of the SCS is therefore
proposed.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Liver Transplantation for Budd-Chiari Syndrome
Orthotopic liver transplantation was accomplished in a 22-year-old woman dying of the Budd-Chiari syndrome. She is well and has normal liver function 16 months postoperatively. In view of the good early result, it will be appropriate to consider liver replacement for this disease in further well-selected cases. © 1976, American Medical Association. All rights reserved
Life course longitudinal growth and risk of knee osteoarthritis at age 53 years: evidence from the 1946 British birth cohort study
Objective:
To examine the relationship between height gain across childhood and adolescence with knee osteoarthritis in the MRC National Survey of Health and Development (NSHD). /
Materials and methods:
Data are from 3035 male and female participants of the NSHD. Height was measured at ages 2, 4, 6, 7, 11 and 15 years, and self-reported at ages 20 years. Associations between (1) height at each age (2) height gain during specific life periods (3) Super-Imposition by Translation And Rotation (SITAR) growth curve variables of height size, tempo and velocity, and knee osteoarthritis at 53 years were tested. /
Results:
In sex-adjusted models, estimated associations between taller height and decreased odds of knee osteoarthritis at age 53 years were small at all ages - the largest associations were an OR of knee osteoarthritis of 0.9 per 5 cm increase in height at age 4, (95% CI 0.7–1.1) and an OR of 0.9 per 5 cm increase in height, (95% CI 0.8–1.0) at age 6. No associations were found between height gain during specific life periods or the SITAR growth curve variables and odds of knee osteoarthritis. /
Conclusions:
There was limited evidence to suggest that taller height in childhood is associated with decreased odds of knee osteoarthritis at age 53 years in this cohort. This work enhances our understanding of osteoarthritis predisposition and the contribution of life course height to this
The quality of life after liver transplantation
The quality of life after liver transplantation ranges from poor to superior. The social and vocational outcome is dependent on the quality of homograft function and on the steroid doses necessary to maintain function. A good long-term prognosis is usually evident by 1 year postoperatively. The complete rehabilitation of so many patients has encouraged us to continue our efforts in this difficult field
Canine liver transplantation under nva cyclosporine versus cyclosporine
The immunosuppressive qualities and other features of a new cyclosporine (CsA) analogue, Nva 2-cyclosporine (Nva 2-CsA) were examined using canine orthotopic liver allografts. The mean survival time was 11.8±9.6 (SD) days in dogs without treatment, 60.8±34.4 days with Nva 2-CsA and 65.1±33.0 days with CsA. Functional abnormalities indicating toxic side effects were not noted either with Nva 2-CsA or with CsA. Using the same oral dose, the rate of blood level rise and the amount of the rise were greater with Nva2-CsA. Histopathologically, Nva2-CsA the treatment was associated with the same degree of hydropic vocuolation in the pars recta of the proximal tubules as CsA treatment. Thus, in the dog, Nva2-CsA had identical immunosuppressive properties as CsA, with no functionally detectable toxicity affecting the liver and kidney. © 1986 by The Williams & Wilkins Co
