    School Days Fifty Years Ago

Not long ago I had a very interesting conversation with a friend of my grandfather. While discussing my graduation from high school and the coming year at Butler, r was\u27 amazed to discover that he had taught school in a rural district some fifty years ago. Naturally I wanted to know all about it because, although I\u27ve read much about the strict old schoolmasters who :\u27didn\u27t spare the rod, I had never seen or talked to one. As I listened to his tales, I felt almost as if I were reading the Hoosier Schoolmaster

Little Girls and the Players They Break: Classic Rock and Gender

While the more commercially successful rock music from the 1960’s to the 1980’s that can be hazily labeled ‘classic rock’ might seem like an older (and by proxy, less relevant) collection of music, it is still influential on many listeners today through popular classic rock radio stations and music tastes shared from one generation to the next. Unfortunately, listeners are often unknowingly absorbing things like harmful gender norms in their musical enjoyment. Through analyzing the content of classic rock music through the textual analysis of classic rock lyrics in attempting to find common themes related to gender roles within heterosexual relationships, I revealed these harmful norms that can now be questioned and changed. This textual analysis of lyrics found that the themes central to sexuality are who is passive versus active agents in the relationship based on gender, male sexuality as predatory and uncontrollable, and where control lies in a relationship in regard to its beginning and end. Ultimately, music is both an expression of culture and an influence on culture, with the classic rock composers instilling their thoughts and beliefs of relationships and gender that they experienced through socialization of their culture into their music that is then heard and internalized by listeners worldwide, influencing a continuation of those initial ideas and concepts (in this case, continuation of the themes found in the results that contribute to things like rape culture). Through the analysis of music, we can discern what cultural norms are being displayed to its members along with understanding the negative impacts that can be targeted for efforts to end things like rape culture and harmful gender norms

    The Essence Of Introspection

In my youth, I grew up watching cartoons and I mean a lot of them. Animation has always been very important to me as I am fascinated by how we give characters movement and how it gives them a personality. Some people might look at these characters and see more than what others see in the sense that a viewer could assume how these characters are supposed to act based on how they walk or how their arms move. The storytelling that we can do with these characters gives us almost unlimited possibilities with where we can go within this form of art. Animators like John Dilworth, Natasha Allergi, and Maxwell Atoms have been some major influences on where I can take this medium. I am fascinated with the storytelling and characterizations of Allergi’s Bee and Puppycat cartoon as well as the combination of comedy, horror, and deep storytelling within John Dilworth’s and Maxwell’s cartoons. The main inspirations within my body of work are the comedy and how these characters are given personalities. One of the main themes of this body of work besides showing off animations is standing out or trying to fit in by not being yourself. Within the looping animation, the viewer sees this wolf character and each time he comes back on to the TV screen, he is dressed up differently to try to capture our attention via a television. In the energy drink commercial, an alien drinks an energy drink causing the character to act crazy and to do funny things. The skateboard commercial showcases a skateboard hurting a monster in comedic fashion and then riding away in said skateboard. Overall, with this work, the viewer should take home the idea to have fun and to be themselves.https://digitalcommons.murraystate.edu/art499/1067/thumbnail.jp

In my work, I lean towards the idea that my art could make people think about others around them. I was mainly inspired to do this by a video I was shown in high school that basically encouraged people to try and put themselves in other peoples’ shoes. I tend to lean towards a cartoony art style because I would like to go into the animation industry and I also like to give my art a comedic tone to it. As a graphic designer, I like to utilize all the tools that I have learned throughout college. In terms of layout design, I tend to play with hierarchy by choosing a lot of sans serif typefaces in my work. By doing this, it makes the text of my work one of the main focus points and it draws the viewer’s attention. I tend to use a color palette of two or three colors because I feel as though it does not take any attention away from the main focus of my work. I tend to make art that heavily relies on text mixing in with an illustration of some sort. In terms of inspiration, I was mainly inspired by animator John Dilworth who created the Courage the Cowardly Dog cartoon. I like how John is able to give characters in his cartoons a lot of depth and meaning while also making the viewer think and care about the characters. In terms of graphic design, I am inspired by works by graphic designers Luba Lukova and Stefan Sagmeister. I love Luba’s choice in making silhouettes of figures along with often a bright or dark color to go with it. I find that her works get straight to the point and that is what I hope to accomplish in my work. I like how Sagmeister experiments with the typefaces in his work and often hand letters his text. I hope to accomplish a minimalistic approach while also experimenting with type in my work.https://digitalcommons.murraystate.edu/art399/1134/thumbnail.jp

From illegitimate disruption to failing state : how South African newspapers framed 'service delivery' protests in 2013

This study unpacks the key frames and sources used by the South African print media in their coverage of the ‘service delivery protests’ in 2013. It explores how the frames are linked to each other, how the sources link to each other, and how the frames and sources correlate. The study focuses on print media sources as catalogued in the SA Media database, identifies the most prevalent frames and sources used, and using a hierarchical cluster analysis identifies how frames are related to each other, how sources are related to each other, and how frames and sources correlate. The study found that the most prevalent frames on ‘service delivery protests’ used by the South African print media in 2013 were the war/spectacle frame and the failed democracy frame, followed by the law/crime frame, all of which serve to delegitimise service delivery protests. Local government and police sources were most prevalent. The study suggests that there is still contestation about the kinds of spaces citizens should use for political engagement, and contestation about how power operates at local government level. The media also implies that the South African state is failing, and suggests remedies for these failings
