    Soft X-ray properties of a spectroscopically selected sample of interacting and isolated Seyfert galaxies

    We present a catalogue of ROSAT detected sources in the sample of spectroscopically selected Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies of Rafanelli et al. (1995). The catalogue contains 102 Seyfert 1 and 36 Seyfert 2 galaxies. The identification is based on X-ray contour maps overlaid on optical images taken from the Digitized Sky Survey. We have derived the basic spectral and timing properties of the X-ray detected Seyfert galaxies. For Seyfert 1 galaxies a strong correlation between photon index and X-ray luminosity is detected. We confirm the presence of generally steeper X-ray continua in narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) compared to broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies. Seyfert 2 galaxies show photon indices similar to those of NLS1s. Whereas a tendency for an increasing X-ray luminosity with increasing interaction strength is found for Seyfert 1 galaxies, such a correlation is not found for Seyfert 2 galaxies. For Seyfert 1 galaxies we found also a strong correlation for increasing far-infrared luminosity with increasing interaction strength. Both NLS1s and Seyfert 2 galaxies show the highest values of far-infrared luminosity compared to Seyfert 1 galaxies, suggesting that NLS1s and Seyfert 2 galaxies host strong (cirumnuclear) starformation. For variable Seyfert galaxies we present the X-ray light curves obtained from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey and from ROSAT PSPC and HRI pointed observations. Besides the expected strong short- and long-term X-ray variability in Seyfert 1 galaxies, we find indications for X-ray flux variations in Seyfert 2 galaxies

Thus, job sets of hundreds > or even thousands of individual jobs are possible. For the job submitter or the resource providers such a scenario is a nightmare currently, as it is hard to keep track of such an amount of jobs or to identify failure reasons. We present a system that will support gLite users to track and monitor their jobs and their resource usage, to nd and identify failure reasons and even to steer running applications

    Zusammenfassung: Hintergrund: Haut- und Weichteilabszesse sind bei intravenös DrogenabhĂ€ngigen der hĂ€ufigste Hospitalisationsgrund. Zu den mit Spritzenabszessen assoziierten Komplikationen gehören septische Arthritiden, septische Thrombosen und Embolien, lokale SchĂ€digung von umliegenden Strukturen, periphere IschĂ€mie durch intraarterielle Injektion, Pseudoaneurysmata von Venen und Arterien und die nekrotisierende Fasziitis. Material und Methode: Wir fĂŒhrten eine retrospektive Studie von 108Hospitalisationen bei 85Patienten mit insgesamt 130Abszessen in Hinblick auf die aufgetretenen Komplikationen durch. Ergebnisse: FĂŒnfundfĂŒnfzig Prozent der Abszesse waren an der unteren ExtremitĂ€t lokalisiert. Die Komplikationsrate an dieser Lokalisation war mit 12/71 (16,9%) signifikant höher (p=0,0005) als an der oberen ExtremitĂ€t mit 0/55. Abszesse an der unteren ExtremitĂ€t fĂŒhrten zu einer signifikant lĂ€ngeren Hospitalisationsdauer als solche an der oberen ExtremitĂ€t (8,5 vs. 4,2Tage, p=0,005) und damit zu höheren Kosten. Schlussfolgerung: Bei der Behandlung von Spritzenabszessen der unteren ExtremitĂ€t muss an das erhöhte Risiko assoziierter Komplikationen gedacht werden. In den Beratungsstellen durchzufĂŒhrende prĂ€ventive Maßnahmen könnten durch Vermeiden von Injektionen an den unteren ExtremitĂ€ten zu einer Verminderung der durch den Drogenkonsum verursachten Kosten fĂŒhre

    Kynurenine pathway inhibition reduces central nervous system inflammation in a model of human African trypanosomiasis

    Human African trypanosomiasis, or sleeping sickness, is caused by the protozoan parasites <i>Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense</i> or <i>Trypanosoma brucei gambiense</i>, and is a major cause of systemic and neurological disability throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Following early-stage disease, the trypanosomes cross the blood-brain barrier to invade the central nervous system leading to the encephalitic, or late stage, infection. Treatment of human African trypanosomiasis currently relies on a limited number of highly toxic drugs, but untreated, is invariably fatal. Melarsoprol, a trivalent arsenical, is the only drug that can be used to cure both forms of the infection once the central nervous system has become involved, but unfortunately, this drug induces an extremely severe post-treatment reactive encephalopathy (PTRE) in up to 10% of treated patients, half of whom die from this complication. Since it is unlikely that any new and less toxic drug will be developed for treatment of human African trypanosomiasis in the near future, increasing attention is now being focussed on the potential use of existing compounds, either alone or in combination chemotherapy, for improved efficacy and safety. The kynurenine pathway is the major pathway in the metabolism of tryptophan. A number of the catabolites produced along this pathway show neurotoxic or neuroprotective activities, and their role in the generation of central nervous system inflammation is well documented. In the current study, Ro-61-8048, a high affinity kynurenine-3-monooxygenase inhibitor, was used to determine the effect of manipulating the kynurenine pathway in a highly reproducible mouse model of human African trypanosomiasis. It was found that Ro-61-8048 treatment had no significant effect (P = 0.4445) on the severity of the neuroinflammatory pathology in mice during the early central nervous system stage of the disease when only a low level of inflammation was present. However, a significant (P = 0.0284) reduction in the severity of the neuroinflammatory response was detected when the inhibitor was administered in animals exhibiting the more severe, late central nervous system stage, of the infection. <i>In vitro</i> assays showed that Ro-61-8048 had no direct effect on trypanosome proliferation suggesting that the anti-inflammatory action is due to a direct effect of the inhibitor on the host cells and not a secondary response to parasite destruction. These findings demonstrate that kynurenine pathway catabolites are involved in the generation of the more severe inflammatory reaction associated with the late central nervous system stages of the disease and suggest that Ro-61-8048 or a similar drug may prove to be beneficial in preventing or ameliorating the PTRE when administered as an adjunct to conventional trypanocidal chemotherap

    Extent of hypoattenuation on CT angiography source images in Basilar Artery occlusion: prognostic value in the Basilar Artery International Cooperation Study

    <p><b>Background and Purpose:</b> The posterior circulation Acute Stroke Prognosis Early CT Score (pc-ASPECTS) quantifies the extent of early ischemic changes in the posterior circulation with a 10-point grading system. We hypothesized that pc-ASPECTS applied to CT angiography source images predicts functional outcome of patients in the Basilar Artery International Cooperation Study (BASICS).</p> <p><b>Methods:</b> BASICS was a prospective, observational registry of consecutive patients with acute symptomatic basilar artery occlusion. Functional outcome was assessed at 1 month. We applied pc-ASPECTS to CT angiography source images of patients with CT angiography for confirmation of basilar artery occlusion. We calculated unadjusted and adjusted risk ratios (RRs) of pc-ASPECTS dichotomized at ≥8 versus <8. Primary outcome measure was favorable outcome (modified Rankin Scale scores 0–3). Secondary outcome measures were mortality and functional independence (modified Rankin Scale scores 0–2).</p> <p><b>Results:</b> Of 158 patients included, 78 patients had a CT angiography source images pc-ASPECTS ≄8. Patients with a pc-ASPECTS ≄8 more often had a favorable outcome than patients with a pc-ASPECTS <8 (crude RR, 1.7; 95% CI, 0.98–3.0). After adjustment for age, baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score, and thrombolysis, pc-ASPECTS ≥8 was not related to favorable outcome (RR, 1.3; 95% CI, 0.8–2.2), but it was related to reduced mortality (RR, 0.7; 95% CI, 0.5–0.98) and functional independence (RR, 2.0; 95% CI, 1.1–3.8). In post hoc analysis, pc-ASPECTS dichotomized at ≥6 versus <6 predicted a favorable outcome (adjusted RR, 3.1; 95% CI, 1.2–7.5).</p> <p><b>Conclusions:</b> pc-ASPECTS on CT angiography source images independently predicted death and functional independence at 1 month in the CT angiography subgroup of patients in the BASICS registry.</p&gt
