Helicity amplitudes and electromagnetic decays of strange baryon resonances
We present results for the helicity amplitudes of the lowest-lying hyperon
resonances Y*, computed within the framework of the Bonn constituent-quark
model, which is based on the Bethe-Salpeter approach. The seven parameters
entering the model are fitted against the best known baryon masses.
Accordingly, the results for the helicity amplitudes are genuine predictions.
Some hyperon resonances are seen to couple more strongly to a virtual photon
with finite Q^2 than to a real photon. Other Y*'s, such as the S_{01}(1670)
Lambda resonance or the S_{11}(1620) Sigma resonance, have large
electromagnetic decay widths and couple very strongly to real photons. The
negatively-charged and neutral members of a Sigma* triplet may couple only
moderately to the Sigma(1193), while the positively-charged member of the same
Sigma* triplet displays a relatively large coupling to the Sigma^+(1193) state.
This illustrates the necessity of investigating all isospin channels in order

Upper Limits on the Extragalactic Background Light from the Gamma-Ray Spectra of Blazars
The direct measurement of the extragalactic background light (EBL) is
difficult at optical to infrared wavelengths because of the strong foreground
radiation originating in the Solar System. Very high energy (VHE, E100 GeV)
gamma rays interact with EBL photons of these wavelengths through pair
production. In this work, the available VHE spectra from six blazars are used
to place upper limits on the EBL. These blazars have been detected over a range
of redshifts and a steepening of the spectral index is observed with increasing
source distance. This can be interpreted as absorption by the EBL. In general,
knowledge of the intrinsic source spectrum is necessary to determine the
density of the intervening EBL. Motivated by the observed spectral steepening
with redshift, upper limits on the EBL are derived by assuming that the
intrinsic spectra of the six blazars are . Upper limits are
then placed on the EBL flux at discrete energies without assuming a specific
spectral shape for the EBL. This is an advantage over other methods since the

Pairing in 4-component fermion systems: the bulk limit of SU(4)-symmetric Hamiltonians
Fermion systems with more than two components can exhibit pairing condensates
of much more complex structure than the well-known single BCS condensate of
spin-up and spin-down fermions. In the framework of the exactly solvable SO(8)
Richardson-Gaudin model with SU(4)-symmetric Hamiltonians, we show that the BCS
approximation remains valid in the thermodynamic limit of large systems for
describing the ground state energy and the canonical and quasiparticle
excitation gaps. Correlations beyond BCS pairing give rise to a spectrum of
collective excitations, but these do not affect the bulk energy and

A Study of Lyman-Alpha Quasar Absorbers in the Nearby Universe
Spectroscopy of ten quasars obtained with the Goddard High Resolution
Spectrograph (GHRS) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is presented. A
clustering analysis reveals an excess of nearest neighbor line pairs on
velocity scales of 250-750 km/s at a 95-98% confidence level. The hypothesis
that the absorbers are randomly distributed in velocity space can be ruled out
at the 99.8% confidence level. No two-point correlation power is detected (xi <
1 with 95% confidence). Lyman-alpha absorbers have correlation amplitudes on
scales of 250-500 km/s at least 4-5 times smaller than the correlation
amplitude of bright galaxies. A detailed comparison between absorbers in nearby
galaxies is carried out on a limited subset of 11 Lyman- alpha absorbers where
the galaxy sample in a large contiguous volume is complete to M_B = -16.
Absorbers lie preferentially in regions of intermediate galaxy density but it
is often not possible to uniquely assign a galaxy counterpart to an absorber.
This sample provides no explicit support for the hypothesis that absorbers are
preferentially associated with the halos of luminous galaxies. We have made a
preliminary comparison of the absorption line properties and environments with
the results of hydrodynamic simulations. The results suggest that the
Lyman-alpha absorbers represent diffuse or shocked gas in the IGM that traces

2017 update of the European Federation for Colposcopy (EFC) performance standards for the practice of colposcopy
A refinement of quality indicators (Qls) is described whereby the quality of care can be measured across colposcopy services in different countries and healthcare settings. A five-round Delphi process was conducted at successive satellite meetings from 2011 to 2015 of leading European colposcopists to refine the most high-scoring Qls relevant to colposcopic practice. A review and refinement of the wording of the standards and their criteria was undertaken by national society representatives. Six quality indicators were identified and refined. "Documentation of whether the squamocolumnar junction (SCJ) has been visible or not" was changed into "for cervical colposcopy transformation zone (TZ) type (1, 2 or 3) should be documented". The standard "percentage of cases having a colposcopic examination prior to treatment for abnormal cytology" was changed to "percentage of cases having a colposcopic examination prior to treatment for abnormal cervical screening test". The standard "percentage of all excisional treatments/conizations containing CIN2+ (cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia grade two or worse)" was changed into "percentage of excisional treatments/conizations having a definitive histology of CIN2+. Definitive histology is highest grade from any diagnostic or therapeutic biopsies". The standard "percentage of excised lesions/conizations with clear margins" was unchanged. The remaining two Qls define the minimum caseloads required for colposcopists. However, "cytology" was replaced by "screening results"to acknowledge the introduction of human papillomavirus testing to European screening programmes. On the instantaneous Bethe-Salpeter equation
We present a systematic algebraic and numerical investigation of the
instantaneous Bethe-Salpeter equation. Emphasis is placed on confining
interaction kernels of the Lorentz scalar, time component vector, and full
vector types. We explore stability of the solutions and Regge behavior for each
of these interactions, and conclude that only time component vector confinement

Bound states in a constituent quark model
We consider the existence of bound systems consisting of two quarks and two
antiquarks () within the framework of a constituent quark model.
The underlying quark dynamics is described by a linear confinement potential
and an effective interaction which has its origin in instanton
effects of QCD. We calculate the spectra and examine the internal structure of
