Oxford University Research Archive (ORA): Climate Research Collection

    Get PDF
Working with the departments within the University of Oxford, primarily with the Social Sciences Division, a 'Research Collection' focusing on the University of Oxford's research output regarding Environmental Sustainability and Climate Research, was created within ORA (Oxford University Research Archive) to showcase the research content. This item details some of the impact of this work

CORE and the Oxford University Research Archive (ORA)

    Get PDF
CORE harvests and aggregates information of research papers collected from institutional and subject repositories, and open access and hybrid journals, and makes the content available via an API (Application Programming Interface). The CORE API offers a wealth of metadata and full text content from its many data providers. For ORA (Oxford University Research Archive), the use of the CORE API offers an opportunity to enhance workflows and streamline the process of reviewing and curating articles for inclusion in the repository. The University of Oxford is subscribed to CORE as a Supporting Member makes details of ORA repository content available for inclusion in CORE as a data provider

Oxford University Research Archive (ORA): themed 'Collections’

    Get PDF
Many areas of research are undertaken at the University of Oxford. ORA Collections aim to bring content available in the repository, covering specific themes of research, together in to a single presentable and searchable space; showcasing all types of work (articles, conference papers, book sections, theses, data, etc.) together for engagement and reference. To avoid manual curation of content for an ORA Collection, SOLR queries have been used to present a work within a theme. This has involved development of SOLR join queries and targeted field indexing to refine search results to the relevance of a collection theme. Three collections have been launched so far, focusing on research themes of COVID-19, Climate, and Artificial Intelligence research. With the creation of each collection the mechanism for curating and presenting results have been developed and refined. The collections have been well received so far with the Climate Research Collection being shortlisted as a finalist in the Green Gown Awards in association with UKRI. We hope that the work done with ORA will provide inspiration to others in presenting themed research collections as well as being able to share the development with SOLR queries. ORA Collections: developing themed research portals within the institutional repository

    Get PDF
Sharing academic research in the digital world is an essential task for an institutional repository. The repository interface can be a powerful tool to increase engagement, help build relationships in common research area themes, and make research accessible to those producing policy and research practice. ORA Collections look to highlight areas of research undertaken at the University of Oxford and where the outputs from that research are made available via the repository. This is a short paper describing ORA collections, selecting content for a collection research theme, and presenting a collection as a portal within the ORA website

An open access payments service for the University of Oxford

    Get PDF
The Bodleian Libraries play a significant role in managing the block grant funding for various funding bodies, including UKRI, Wellcome Trust, CRUK, and BHF, that support payments facilitating open access, on behalf of the University of Oxford. The administration of these funds, as well as the reporting and tracking of article processing charges (APCs), has for some time been handled using manually maintained spreadsheets. Alternative solutions like Jisc Monitor have not met Oxford's complex requirements - Jisc Monitor is also now set to cease as a service. To address the challenges of managing open access payments, the Bodleian Libraries have developed an in-house solution to streamline the application and administration process for OA funds. A new interface has been created at https://apc.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/ that allows Oxford researchers to quickly and easily apply for funding, and for staff to manage the requests. The new system has also been enhanced to include book processing charges (BPCs) in response to the new funding requirements set by UKRI. This paper details some of the challenges faced in managing open access payments at Oxford and the developing solution

JTP: An Energy-conscious Transport Protocol for Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

Within a recently developed low-power ad hoc network system, we present a transport protocol (JTP) whose goal is to reduce power consumption without trading off delivery requirements of applications. JTP has the following features: it is lightweight whereby end-nodes control in-network actions by encoding delivery requirements in packet headers; JTP enables applications to specify a range of reliability requirements, thus allocating the right energy budget to packets; JTP minimizes feedback control traffic from the destination by varying its frequency based on delivery requirements and stability of the network; JTP minimizes energy consumption by implementing in-network caching and increasing the chances that data retransmission requests from destinations "hit" these caches, thus avoiding costly source retransmissions; and JTP fairly allocates bandwidth among flows by backing off the sending rate of a source to account for in-network retransmissions on its behalf. Analysis and extensive simulations demonstrate the energy gains of JTP over one-size-fits-all transport protocols.Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (AFRL FA8750-06-C-0199

Potentials of social media for tacit knowledge sharing amongst physicians : preliminary findings

    Get PDF
Tacit knowledge sharing amongst physicians, such as the sharing of clinical experiences, skills, or know-how, or know-whom, is known to have a significant impact on the quality of medical diagnosis and decisions. This paper posits that social media can provide new opportunities for tacit knowledge sharing amongst physicians, and demonstrates this by presenting findings from a review of relevant literature and a survey conducted with physicians. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten physicians from around the world who were active users of social media. Initial thematic analysis revealed eight themes as potential contributions of social web tools to facilitate tacit knowledge flow amongst physicians. The emergent themes are defined, linked to the literature, and supported by instances of interview transcripts. Findings presented here are preliminary, and final results will be reported after accomplishing all phases of data collection and analysis.<br /
