Surat 2006 Floods: A Citizens’ Report
Surat is situated at the mouth of the river Tapi where it meets the Arabian Sea and has for centuries been a flood-affected area. The most recent floods however, were different because of the magnitude of their effect. Nearly 90 per cent of the households were affected; six of the seven wards of the city had water standing for days. It crippled the economy and affected people's coping abilities. In the wake of the floods the Department of Human Resource Development of the Veer Narmad South Gujarat University and the Centre for Social Studies conducted a study looking at how people coped with the disaster and the impact of the flood on their lives and the economy. It offers some pointers about how the impact can be mitigated in similar situations in the future

An optical Ising spin glass simulator with tuneable short range couplings
Non-deterministic polynomial-time (NP) problems are ubiquitous in almost
every field of study. Recently, all-optical approaches have been explored for
solving classic NP problems based on the spin-glass Ising Hamiltonian. However,
obtaining programmable spin-couplings in large-scale optical Ising simulators,
on the other hand, remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate control of the
interaction length between user-defined parts of a fully-connected Ising
system. This is achieved by exploiting the knowledge of the transmission matrix
of a random medium and by using diffusers of various thickness. Finally, we
exploit our spin-coupling control to observe replica-to-replica fluctuations
and its analogy to standard replica symmetry breaking.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2111.0789
Interrogating the Light-Induced Charging Mechanism in Li-Ion Batteries Using Operando Optical Microscopy
Photobatteries, batteries with a light-sensitive electrode, have recently been proposed as a way of simultaneously capturing and storing solar energy in a single device. Despite reports of photocharging with multiple different electrode materials, the overall mechanism of operation remains poorly understood. Here, we use operando optical reflection microscopy to investigate light-induced charging in LixV2O5 electrodes. We image the electrode, at the single-particle level, under three conditions: (a) with a closed circuit and light but no electronic power source (photocharging), (b) during galvanostatic cycling with light (photoenhanced), and (c) with heat but no light (thermal). We demonstrate that light can indeed drive lithiation changes in LixV2O5 while maintaining charge neutrality, possibly via a combination of faradaic and nonfaradaic effects taking place in individual particles. Our results provide an addition to the photobattery mechanistic model highlighting that both intercalation-based charging and lithium concentration polarization effects contribute to the increased photocharging capacity
