Review of the effects of anesthetic agents used as premedication for patients undergoing electroconvulsive therapy with diagnoses of bipolar disorder or major depression on convulsion, recovery period, and hemodynamic parameters

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of anesthetic agents used as premedication in patients undergoing electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for diagnoses of bipolar disorder or major depression in terms of convulsion, recovery period, and hemodynamic parameters. Materials and Method: This retrospective study was carried out by screening the anesthesia forms of patients in a psychiatry clinic in Turkey. Results: Researchers reviewed 104 patient files, of which 39 fit the inclusion criteria. 26 patients were given premedication; 13 patients were not given premedication. The study found a significant difference between the group to which dexmedetomidine was given and the non-premedication group in terms of mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate. A significant difference was also found between the group to which midazolam was given and the non-premedication group in terms of peripheral oxygen saturation. Conclusion: Premedication before ECT may be used to reduce the side effects after ECT without affecting convulsions and the recovery period

The Effect of Migration on Urbanization of Turkey, Case of Diyarbakir

The study will be deal with migration, which is a very important phenomenon in urbanization process and mostly has negative effects and brings lots of problems to urban life. Migration could be describe as a movement that contains demand for a better life, i.e. demand for housing, demand for job, demand for school, etc… This demand, however, puts out of order urban life and disintegrates the urban system. In Turkey, especially after 1950ies, there is migration and sometimes this migration has been containing very big numbers in terms of population. Besides, after 1990ies, Southeastern Anatolia Region of Turkey has given out migration, especially via the city of Diyarbakir. The migration, from the city and the region to west side of Turkey, like Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir, used Diyarbakir as a stopover. In addition of being a stopover point, Diyarbakir not only gives out migration but also get in migration. Thus makes Diyarbakir a city that has no history in social life and in urban culture. Shortly, The study will try to question migration and its effects to Turkey’s urbanization process in Diyarbakir case.

A General Framework for Cooperation under Uncertainty

In this paper, we introduce a general framework for situations with decision making under uncertainty and cooperation possibilities. This framework is based upon a two stage stochastic programming approach. We show that under relatively mild assumptions the cooperative games associated with these situations are totally balanced and, hence, have non-empty cores. In this paper we analyze the potential impact of the EU sugar reform on the Turkish sugar industry. Turkey’s candidacy to the EU and its strong economic links to the region imply that EU sugar policy will likely to be binding for Turkey as well in which case this will lead to a decrease in prices of Turkish sugar by no less than 55%. Turkish sugar industry will be seriously affected by the reduction in beet and sugar prices which will not be offset by possible increases in world sugar prices. Growers on contract will decline substantially. Since the reduction in growers contracted is more extensive than declines in sales, we can predict that the sugar industry will be transformed as a result of the synchronization with EU policies. Translating Khan on Singer: Global Solvent Versus Local Interpretation

This work focuses on Peter Singer’s book, One World: The Ethics of Globalisation, and a reading of it recently presented by M. Ali Khan. Khan’s response to Singer is acutely critical, but ultimately fails to situate Singer’s offering in its proper historical context. In this sense, Khan’s response is not sufficient. We demonstrate that Singer’s offering is permeated by a universalising discourse marked by asymmetric power relations clearly described by Edward Said in Orientalism and, more surprisingly, by Fyodor Dostoyevsky in The Possessed.
