Pressure Drop Across Woven Screens Under Uniform and Nonuniform Flow Conditions

    Get PDF
Tests were conducted to determine the experimental pressure drop and velocity data for water flowing through woven screens. The types of materials used are dutch twill and square weave fabrics. Pressure drop measures were made at four locations in a rectangular channel. The data are presented as change in pressure compared with the average entry velocity and the numerical relationship is determined by dividing the volumetric flow rate by the screen area open to flow. The equations of continuity and momentum are presented. A computer program listing an extension of a theoretical model and data from that computer program are included

Calculation of eddy viscosity in a compressible turbulent boundary layer with mass injection and chemical reaction, volume 2

    Get PDF
As described in Vol. 1, the eddy viscosity is calculated through the turbulent kinetic energy, in order to include the history of the flow and the effect of chemical reaction on boundary layer characteristics. Calculations can be performed for two different cooling concepts; that is, transpiration and regeneratively cooled wall cases. For the regenerative cooling option, coolant and gas side wall temperature and coolant bulk temperature in a rocket engine can be computed along the nozzle axis. Thus, this computer program is useful in designing coolant flow rate and cooling tube geometry, including the tube wall thickness as well as in predicting the effects of boundary layers along the gas side wall on thrust performances

Process for the production of metal nitride sintered bodies and resultant silicon nitride and aluminum nitride sintered bodies

    Get PDF
A process for the manufacture of metal nitride sintered bodies, in particular, a process in which a mixture of metal nitrite powders is shaped and heated together with a binding agent is described. Of the metal nitrides Si3N4 and AIN were used especially frequently because of their excellent properties at high temperatures. The goal is to produce a process for metal nitride sintered bodies with high strength, high corrosion resistance, thermal shock resistance, thermal shock resistance, and avoidance of previously known faults

Scale-invariant statistics of period in directed earthquake network

A new law regarding structure of the earthquake networks is found. The seismic data taken in California is mapped to a growing directed network. Then, statistics of period in the network, which implies that after how many earthquakes an earthquake returns to the initial location, is studied. It is found that the period distribution obeys a power law, showing the fundamental difficulty of statistical estimate of period.Comment: 11 pages including 3 figure

Dynamical evolution of clustering in complex network of earthquakes

The network approach plays a distinguished role in contemporary science of complex systems/phenomena. Such an approach has been introduced into seismology in a recent work [S. Abe and N. Suzuki, Europhys. Lett. 65, 581 (2004)]. Here, we discuss the dynamical property of the earthquake network constructed in California and report the discovery that the values of the clustering coefficient remain stationary before main shocks, suddenly jump up at the main shocks, and then slowly decay following a power law to become stationary again. Thus, the network approach is found to characterize main shocks in a peculiar manner.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl

Photon generation by laser-Compton scattering at the KEK-ATF

We performed a photon generation experiment by laser-Compton scattering at the KEK-ATF, aiming to develop a Compton based polarized positron source for linear colliders. In the experiment, laser pulses with a 357 MHz repetition rate were accumulated and their power was enhanced by up to 250 times in the Fabry-Perot optical resonant cavity. We succeeded in synchronizing the laser pulses and colliding them with the 1.3 GeV electron beam in the ATF ring while maintaining the laser pulse accumulation in the cavity. As a result, we observed 26.0 +/- 0.1 photons per electron-laser pulse crossing, which corresponds to a yield of 10^8 photons in a second.Comment: 3 pages, 5 figures, Preprint submitted to TIPP09 Proceedings in NIM

A New Symmetric Expression of Weyl Ordering

For the creation operator \adag and the annihilation operator aa of a harmonic oscillator, we consider Weyl ordering expression of (\adag a)^n and obtain a new symmetric expression of Weyl ordering w.r.t. \adag a \equiv N and a\adag =N+1 where NN is the number operator. Moreover, we interpret intertwining formulas of various orderings in view of the difference theory. Then we find that the noncommutative parameter corresponds to the increment of the difference operator w.r.t. variable NN. Therefore, quantum (noncommutative) calculations of harmonic oscillators are done by classical (commutative) ones of the number operator by using the difference theory. As a by-product, nontrivial relations including the Stirling number of the first kind are also obtained.Comment: 15 pages, Latex2e, the title before replacement is "Orderings of Operators in Quantum Physics", new proofs by using a difference operator added, some references added, to appear in Modern Physics Letters

Subalgebras with Converging Star Products in Deformation Quantization: An Algebraic Construction for \complex \mbox{\LARGE P}^n

Based on a closed formula for a star product of Wick type on \CP^n, which has been discovered in an earlier article of the authors, we explicitly construct a subalgebra of the formal star-algebra (with coefficients contained in the uniformly dense subspace of representative functions with respect to the canonical action of the unitary group) that consists of {\em converging} power series in the formal parameter, thereby giving an elementary algebraic proof of a convergence result already obtained by Cahen, Gutt, and Rawnsley. In this subalgebra the formal parameter can be substituted by a real number α\alpha: the resulting associative algebras are infinite-dimensional except for the case α=1/K\alpha=1/K, KK a positive integer, where they turn out to be isomorphic to the finite-dimensional algebra of linear operators in the KKth energy eigenspace of an isotropic harmonic oscillator with n+1n+1 degrees of freedom. Other examples like the 2n2n-torus and the Poincar\'e disk are discussed.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX with AMS Font

Self-organized critical earthquake model with moving boundary

A globally driven self-organized critical model of earthquakes with conservative dynamics has been studied. An open but moving boundary condition has been used so that the origin (epicenter) of every avalanche (earthquake) is at the center of the boundary. As a result, all avalanches grow in equivalent conditions and the avalanche size distribution obeys finite size scaling excellent. Though the recurrence time distribution of the time series of avalanche sizes obeys well both the scaling forms recently observed in analysis of the real data of earthquakes, it is found that the scaling function decays only exponentially in contrast to a generalized gamma distribution observed in the real data analysis. The non-conservative version of the model shows periodicity even with open boundary.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted version in EPJ
