'Surprising kinetics' or the major role of trace quantities in radical chain mechanisms
Although hydrogen abstraction from 1,1,1,2-tetrachloroethane should produce only one kind of radical, CCl3CHCl, the presence of small amounts of trichloroethene, as impurity as well as product of reaction, induces the formation of the a priori unexpected CHCl2CCl2 radicals. The importance of this radical in the reaction pathways of the chlorination and the chlorine induced dehydrochlorination of CCl3CH2Cl, under different experimental conditions, is computed and discussed. For example, at 380 K, and for small partial pressures of chlorine (2 torr), the CHCl2CCl2 radicals account for more than 70% of the formation of the reaction products after only 2% reaction. The major role of trace quantities in long chain radical reactions is emphasized.SCOPUS: ar.jFLWNAinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
The chlorine-atom-sensitized oxidation of chloroform
The chlorine-photosensitized oxidation of chloroform {A figure is presented} was studied at 303, 346, 400 and 426 K. At the two higher temperatures the simultaneous oxygen-inhibited photochlorination {A figure is presented} was observed. The mechanism and kinetics of these reactions are discussed in detail and several complex rate constants are given concerning chain termination reactions and chain propagation reactions involving Cl. CCl3. and CCl3O2. radicals. The behaviour of this system is very similar to that of the chlorinated ethanes and ethylenes. Evidence for a chain termination reaction {A figure is presented} is given. © 1980.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
Addition of chlorine atom on vinyl chloride
The competitive photochlorination of vinyl chloride and ethane has been studied at 322°K and permits one to measure k2 = 1010 mole −1 1 sec −1 for the rate constant of the addition of a Cl atom on vinyl chloride. This value is compared with those obtained for other chlorinated ethylenes and is discussed with respect to recent theoretical calculations. Copyright © 1974 Wiley‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
