In particular, the present study focuses on a lesson for Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) collaboratively developed by social studies and English teachers in order to carry out cross-curricular lesson planning at the elementary school level.
First, a social studies teacher and an English teacher individually planned a lesson based on the activities by Floyd Wilfred Schmoe as a common case and later studied a book about his work as a common ground for collaborative materials development. Here they read the book about Schmoeâs Houses for Hiroshima Projects and learned the process and structure of how to turn professional researchersâ learning to learnersâ learning. Then the authors developed a CLIL lesson together and showed its design process. This materials development study shows the process of CLIL lesson planning and by doing so, it showed a teachersâ learning process in cross-curricular lesson planning ranging from reading articles/books, materials study, and lesson planning.
There are three findings from this study:
(1) Understanding the structure of researchersâ learning process can be utilized in the process of materials study and lesson planning in cross-curricular lesson planning in the elementary school.
(2) Although it is possible to apply and use the structure of researchersâ learning found in their articles/books, findings should be adapted to the childrenâs developmental stages and learning environment. It is important to make sure that the developed cross-curricular lesson should provide effective materials to both subjects.
(3) Important things in reading articles/books as materials study are:
1) to identify the structure of the target articles/books
2) to identify the key concepts of the resource materials and see if those concepts can be used as a core in lesson planning
3) to consider if the developed materials/lessons are appropriate for children in elementary schoolâ»å

In the making of models, despite the technical problems, we found the definite types to make models: the floor or the roof structure, and the making process itself. In particular, we revealed that childrenâs sense of security sensibility coexisted with an adventurous spirit. Theme setting and the choice of materials for making the models require further study

In analysis of questionnaire before and after the workshop, what children desired for living space changed, when the method was changed from âtyingâ to âwooden jointingâ. It is the important result that childrenâs conscious for secure was affected by external factor; the model making method. Theme relation of childrenâs living environment and analysis of structure of floor require further study

As a result, to focus on global environmental studies, it is possible to develop elementary school classes of social studies to approach the contemporary environmental problem. In addition, we suggest a perspective from which to develop classes: (1) Focusing learning material on the environmental problem. (2) Creating learning material on globalization and relationship. (3) Pursuing a case study consisting of relationship and case study about relationship of familiar place in learning contents. (4) Positioning to take up relationship between the global environmental problem and man and nature. Henceforth, we will verify the effectiveness of lessons while taking further the development and practice of classes and start creating curriculums of global social learning based on the theory that we have developed for three years

ããçºæ³ãä¿ãå¹æããã£ããšèãããããThis study explains the evaluation and capability of "safe environment" education. During the study year, we conducted a questionnaire survey about "security and risk" in living environments (home, school route, and school) for fourth grade students (39 persons). We held a pre-workshop to propose "secure environment" education with the "five senses icons." We also conducted fieldwork around the school to train instructors in the descriptive capability for the social environment. For the workshop, we introduced the three "thanks icons" to enable students to learn about security. The analysis produced two findings. First, security evaluations and suggestions for each environment varied widely. Second, such diversity was observed in the use of the "thanks icons," whereas the use of the "five senses icons" exhibited preference for the icons of "view" and "touch." This result suggests that the lesson using "thanks icons" promoted the idea of security beyond common sense alone

This year, we have conducted a questionnaire survey about security and risks in the living environments (at home, on the school route, and at school), with fifth-grade students as participants (n = 38). In addition, we undertook fieldwork around the studentsâ school to test the efficacy of the proposal within the appropriate environment. During our workshops, we introduced the âthanks iconâ to make students learn more effectively about the safe environment. From our research, we established the following: first, the âthanks iconsâ were more effective with inexperienced students. In other words, the students who lacked knowledge about the safe environment developed their understanding through the activity that involved this tool. Second, all the students proposed for âsafe environmentâ in a uniform way

This involved three areas. First, we recognized the problem of the globalization of culture, which we approached from the perspective of how global culture spreads and how it relates to the existing cultures. Second, to discover more regarding the preservation of existing cultures in a global society, analysis was undertaken to compare the characteristics of globalized culture with those of the existing cultures. Third, we showed types of global social learning where there were class development and class practice. We showed four types of learning: âINPUT: traditional culture type,â âINPUT: contemporary culture type,â âOUTPUT: traditional culture type,â âOUTPUT: contemporary culture type.

Regarding the society's structural globalization, this study reveals social problems affected by the process of transformation of societal structure due to globalization primarily in the economy, culture, and environment through a literature review and results of an analysis of social problems arising from globalization and their causes. On the basis of the results of lessons dealing with the effects of expanding markets, national globalization reveals the importance of increasing standardization corresponding to capitalist economies based on American neo-liberalism and the need to pursue innovation, such as corporate product development to achieve that standardization, I discuss the results' implications for developing lessons dealing with issues of culture and environment, to review the structure of a globalizing society, and to explore the effects of globalization in each field
