EXAMINATION OF THE ORIGINAL AWAODORI GUIDANCE WITH THE LAPTOP COMPUTER
The purposes of this study were 1) to introduce the original AWAODORI guidance computer software with the laptop computer to beginner college students and 2) to examine its effect on their motivation. AWAODORI is one of the most famous regional dances in Japan. It is a humorous dance and remains a traditional event of Tokushima, Japan. The reason why we designed the software was to pass this dance from generation to generation using some of the advantages of the modern laptop computer. 16 healthy college students participated in this study and they were divided into two groups. One group using AWAODORI software, the other the AWAODORI guidance video and other supplementary materials. In this study, there was no statistical difference to be found between the two groups indicating that the software may be as equally effective as conventional methods of guidance
Lepton electric dipole moments in supersymmetric type II seesaw model
AbstractWe study the lepton electric dipole moments in the framework of the supersymmetric type II seesaw model where the exchange of heavy SU(2)W triplets generates small neutrino masses. We show that the CP violating phase of the bilinear soft supersymmetry breaking term associated with the SU(2)W triplets contributes to lepton electric dipole moments mainly through threshold corrections to the gaugino masses at the seesaw scale. As a consequence, the ratio of the electric dipole moments of the muon and the electron is the same as the ratio of their masses in a wide region of parameter space
The Suzaku Observations of SS Cygni in Quiescence and Outburst
We present results from the Suzaku observations of the dwarf nova SS Cyg in
quiescence and outburst in 2005 November. Owing to high sensitivity of the HXD
PIN detector and high spectral resolution of the XIS, we have determined
parameters of the plasma with unprecedented precision. The maximum temperature
of the plasma in quiescence 20.4 +4.0-2.6 (stat.) +/- 3.0 (sys.) keV is
significantly higher than that in outburst 6.0 +0.2-1.3 keV. The elemental
abundances are close to the solar ones for the medium-Z elements (Si, S, Ar)
whereas they decline both in lighter and heavier elements. Those of oxygen and
iron are 0.46 and 0.37 solar, respectively. That of carbon is exceptionally
high and 2 solar at least. The solid angle of the reflector subtending over the
optically thin thermal plasma is Omega/2\pi = 1.7+/-0.2 (stat.) +/-0.1 (sys.)
in quiescence. A 6.4 keV iron Ka line is resolved into a narrow and broad
components. These facts indicate that both the white dwarf and the accretion
disk contribute to the continuum reflection and the 6.4 keV iron Ka line. We
consider the standard optically thin boundary layer as the most plausible
picture for the plasma configuration in quiescence. The solid angle of the
reflector in outburst Omega/2\pi = 0.9 +0.5-0.4 and a broad 6.4 keV iron line
indicates that the reflection in outburst originates from the accretion disk
and an equatorial accretion belt. From the energy width of the 6.4 keV line, we
consider the optically thin thermal plasma in outburst as being distributed on
the accretion disk like solar coronae.Comment: 28 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ Suzaku 3rd

A Change in the Radius of Rotation of F1-ATPase Indicates a Tilting Motion of the Central Shaft
AbstractF1-ATPase is a water-soluble portion of FoF1-ATP synthase and rotary molecular motor that exhibits reversibility in chemical reactions. The rotational motion of the shaft subunit γ has been carefully scrutinized in previous studies, but a tilting motion of the shaft has never been explicitly postulated. Here we found a change in the radius of rotation of the probe attached to the shaft subunit γ between two different intermediate states in ATP hydrolysis: one waiting for ATP binding, and the other waiting for ATP hydrolysis and/or subsequent product release. Analysis of this radial difference indicates a ∼4° outward tilting of the γ-subunit induced by ATP binding. The tilt angle is a new parameter, to our knowledge, representing the motion of the γ-subunit and provides a new constraint condition of the ATP-waiting conformation of F1-ATPase, which has not been determined as an atomic structure from x-ray crystallography
Increased LDL susceptibility to oxidation accelerates future carotid artery atherosclerosis

Abstract

Background

We analyzed the causal relationship between LDL susceptibility to oxidation and the development of new carotid artery atherosclerosis over a period of 5 years. We previously described the determinants related to a risk of cardiovascular changes determined in a Japanese population participating in the Niigata Study, which is an ongoing epidemiological investigation of the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

Methods

We selected 394 individuals (169 males and 225 females) who underwent a second carotid artery ultrasonographic examination in 2001 - 2002 for the present study. The susceptibility of LDL to oxidation was determined as the photometric absorbance and electrophoretic mobility of samples that had been collected in 1996 - 1997. The measurements were compared with ultrasonographic findings obtained in 2001 - 2002.

Results

The multivariate-adjusted model showed that age (odds ratio (OR), 1.034; 95% confidence interval (95%CI), 1.010 - 1.059), HbA1c (OR, 1.477; 95%CI, 0.980 - 2.225), and photometric O/N (OR, 2.012; 95%CI, 1.000 - 4.051) were significant variables that could independently predict the risk of new carotid artery atherosclerosis.

Conclusion

The susceptibility of LDL to oxidation was a significant parameter that could predict new carotid artery atherosclerosis over a 5-year period, and higher susceptibility was associated with a higher incidence of new carotid artery atherosclerosis.</p
BIOMECHANICAL CONSIDERATIONS OF TAKEUMA-WALKING IN WATER
"TAKEUMA" is one of Japanese classic style of playing. Usually it is played on land, but in water, one can easier ambulate with TAKEUMA in water, for buoyancy and resistance force. The purposes of this study were to clarify biomechanical features of TAKEUMA-walking in water and to compare the motion characteristics of skilled TAKEUMA players with those of unskilled. The TAKEUMA-walking motions were recorded both in a water tank and on land. It was revealed that the body inclination to the forward direction would be a key feature of the well-trained TAKEUMA-walking, and even in unskilled subjects the relatively greater forward-inclined posture was preserved in water. It is important to handle and hold a TAKEUMA by using upper limbs, especially forearms, when walking with TAKEUMA in water
Comparison between normal and loose fragment chondrocytes in proliferation and redifferentiation potential
Loose fragments in osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the knee require internal fixation. On the other hand, loose fragments derived from spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee (SONK) are usually removed. However, the difference in healing potential between OCD- and SONK-related loose fragments has not been elucidated. In this study, we investigated proliferative activity and redifferentiation potential of normal cartilage-derived and loose fragment-derived chondrocytes.
Cells were prepared from normal articular cartilages and loose fragment cartilages derived from knee OCD and SONK. Cellular proliferation was compared. Redifferentiation ability of pellet-cultured chondrocytes was assessed by real-time PCR analyses. Mesenchymal differentiation potential was investigated by histological analyses. Positive ratio of a stem cell marker CD166 was evaluated in each cartilaginous tissue.
Normal and OCD chondrocytes showed a higher proliferative activity than SONK chondrocytes. Chondrogenic pellets derived from normal and OCD chondrocytes produced a larger amount of safranin O-stained proteoglycans compared with SONK-derived pellets. Expression of chondrogenic marker genes was inferior in SONK pellets. The CD166-positive ratio was higher in normal cartilages and OCD loose fragments than in SONK loose fragments.
The OCD chondrocytes maintained higher proliferative activity and redifferentiation potential compared with SONK chondrocytes. Our results suggest that chondrogenic properties of loose fragment-derived cells and the amount of CD166-positive cells may affect the repair process of osteochondral defects
Relationship between Salivary Oxytocin Levels and Generosity in Preschoolers
This study examined the association between salivary oxytocin (sOT) levels and generosity in preschoolers. Fifty preschoolers played two dictator games (DG) by deciding how to allocate 10 chocolates between themselves and another child, who was either from the same class as the participant (ingroup member), or an unknown child from another class (outgroup member). sOT levels were assessed in saliva collected from the children immediately prior to the DG tasks. While sOT levels were negatively associated with allocations made to both ingroup and outgroup members by boys, among girl sOT levels were positively related to allocations made to ingroup members, and unrelated to allocations made to outgroup members. These results suggest sex differences in the association between salivary oxytocin and generosity
