    For many, 2020 will be marked by COVID-19 and the considerable challenges that come with a global pandemic. For us, 2020 also will be marked by the great accomplishments and the inspiring collaborations that have taken place at the University of Maine, where we are proud of our university community for its dedication, teamwork, and resilience in the face of the pandemic. As Maine’s research university, it is the distinguishing part of our mission. Research impacts all areas — from student success and cutting-edge academic programs, to workforce development, innovation and economic advancement. In recent years, while advancing as a modern 21st Century research university, we have placed considerable emphasis on the growth and development of the research enterprise, and its resulting impact on Maine and beyond. We are pleased to report that significant advances have been made in the realization of the above-mentioned goals, and despite the daunting challenges caused by the pandemic, this has been an outstanding year for research and scholarly achievements at Maine’s land, sea, and space grant university. It has set a new record, by generating 125.2millioninexternalfundingduringfiscalyear2020,insupportofresearchanddevelopmentactivities.Thiscorrespondstoa120125.2 million in external funding during fiscal year 2020, in support of research and development activities. This corresponds to a 120% increase over the past four years, and an all-time high record realized by the university. During the same period of time, R&D expenditures have also reached a new all-time high record of 165.1 million, corresponding to a 66% increase over the past four years. Moreover, doctoral student enrollment for the first time in the university’s history has exceeded 500, by setting an all-time high record of 517, as compared to the previous record of 463 set in 2012

    The University of Maine is committed to the ethical principles stated in this preamble concerning the use of live vertebrate animals for research, teaching, or testing. These principles shall guide all persons associated with the University of Maine. Vertebrate animals may share in varying degree many sensory, emotional, and cognitive responses with humankind. It is essential that we assume responsibility for their welfare and that animal use for research or teaching purposes be conducted in a humane, compassionate manner. To justify the ethical costs of using live animals in research, teaching, or testing, there must be reasonable expectation that such usage will contribute to the advancement of knowledge which may eventually benefit humankind and/or animals

    The 2014-15 academic year marked the first year since AY 1998-99 that research and graduate studies were administratively organized into one office. The reorganization brings synergy and focus to these two vital and strongly linked components of the University of Maine’s land grant mission. During FY 2015 a total of 51,134,092werereceivedfromextramuralsponsorsandwerecomprisedof370awards.TheseresultscloselymirrorFY2014with363awardsand51,134,092 were received from extramural sponsors and were comprised of 370 awards. These results closely mirror FY 2014 with 363 awards and 51,169,551 received. Our average proposal success rate from FY 2005 – FY 2015 was approximately 68%. The FY 2015 proposal success rate was 76%, up from 63% in FY 2014. UMaine is consistently ranked among the top 125 public universities for research through the NSF Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) Survey. The most recent HERD survey reflects a steep increase in research expenditures at UMaine, from 77.6millioninFY13to77.6 million in FY13 to 101.2 million in FY 14. UMaine’s Carnegie Classification remains in the High Research Activity category. In addition, the Graduate School continued to increase its student recruitment activities, focusing on professional graduate programs, in which the majority of losses in student enrollment in the Graduate School have occurred

This Policy applies to all Research and scholarship conducted within the University community, irrespective of discipline or funding source, if any. Individuals accused of Research Misconduct are presumed innocent of any Allegations until the contrary has been established by a final decision reached under this Policy

    UMaine PFAS+ Initiative — Transformative Solutions for PFAS Pollution

    The University of Maine PFAS+ is a multi-disciplinary initiative that focuses on the emerging PFAS pollution crisis and its cascading environmental and societal impacts. The plus sign indicates the breadth of the impacts that PFAS has on society, other emerging environmental pollutants, as well as the transformative and novel approach that UMaine realizes. Vision To mitigate the PFAS crisis and its consequences safely and sustainably in Maine and beyond. Mission To address through research and development the multifaceted challenges posed by PFAS pollution. Purpose Strategic planning of PFAS mitigation efforts, coordination of high quality PFAS analysis and conducting cutting edge research that is driven by federal and state agencies, University of Maine researchers and impacted stakeholders. The long-term goals of the initiative are to unravel PFAS pollution pathways, and develop safe and sustainable mitigation approaches involving new materials, devices, technologies, processes for food, water and environmental safety. The initiative also aspires to create transparent PFAS communication framework to minimize public health hazards
