Observation of Cochlear Sensory Hairs in the Neonatal Hamster

    Get PDF
The authors performed the observation of the cochlear sensory hairs in the neonatal hamster by the scanning electron microscope from the first day to the sixteenth day after birth, by surface preparation technique under the magnifying glass. The results were as follows : The cochlear sensory hairs that were observed as the microvilli in the initial stage grew up to the stereocilia of adult hamster, showing the regular pattern of the development of the cochlear sensory hairs. The time of the completion of those development was judged to be eleven, thirteen and sixteen days after birth, in each basal, middle and apical turn of the basilar membrane

Mechanism of sound susceptibility in organ of Corti - inference of contrary recruitment phenomenon (hypothesis) and the application to diagnosis -.

    Get PDF
In order to make the mechanism concerned with the sound-susceptibility in the organ of Corti clear, we observed the organ of Corti with the phase-contrast microscope, after the microdissection of the cochleae in human, dogs, guinea pigs and hamsters by Engstroöm's surface preparation technique. As a result, we have formulated a hypothesis for the mechanism of the sound-susceptibility in the organ of Corti. Further, we have inferred the contrary recruitment phenomenon (hypothesis), by explaining theoretically such a clinical fact as the recruitment phenomenon or the cochlear hearing loss by applying our first formula of hypothesis. Finally, we described the application of the contrary recruitment phenomenon (hypothesis) to the early discovery or diagnosis of the false normal ear or cochlea, in other words, latent hearing loss.</p

Severe Superior Epistaxis Controlled by Clipping the Anterior Ethmoidal Artery : Report of a Case

    Get PDF
The case of a 40-year-old woman in whom severe superior epistaxis was controlled by clipping the left anterior ethmoidal artery is reported. The patient suddenly developed an uncontrolled epistaxis, and was brought to our hospital by ambulance. Though a Bellocq\u27s tampon was left in place for seven days, severe superior epistaxis recurred. Therefore the left anterior ethmoidal artery was clipped with self-locking hemostatic clips using an external ethmoid incision under local anesthesia, after which the symptom became inactive. Based on this experience, hemostasis of epistaxis in our division with special reference to clipping of the anterior ethmoidal artery is discussed

Inhibitory Effects of Heavy Metal Ions on Endolymphatic DC Potential and Cochlear Microphonics in the Guinea Pig

    Get PDF
Endocochlear DC potential (EP) and cochlear microphonics (CM) were investigated in the guinea pig under the influence of the following heavy metal ions; manganese, nickel, cobalt, cadmium and lanthanum. The scala tympani and scala vestibuli were perfused with control and test solutions. CM decreased gradually to 50-80%, but EP showed no change after perfusion with a solution containing 1 mM of metal ions. At a concentration of 10 mM, EP decreased from +80 mV to +11-+48 mV and CM decreased to 15-55%. These decreases in EP and CM were irreversible, and perfusion of the area with the standard solution for 20 min had no effect

The authors reported clinical and statistical studies on the forty-two cases with laryngeal carcinoma that were admitted to Kawasaki Medical School Hospital between June 1975 and September 1981, that is, these cases were reported from viewpoints of age, rate of existence, chief complaints, smoking, drinking, treatments, prognoses, double carcinoma, cause of death, primary parts, total laryngectomy etc

A Case of Lipoma in the Deep Part of Neck

It is comparatively rare that lipoma is found in the deep part of neck, though lipoma is often found in parts of back, neck, breast, etc. And so the authors reported a case of lipoma in 71-year-old woman that was made the diagnosis of lipoma in the deep part of neck, from the clinical symptoms and CT examination, and was confirmed histologically after the enucleation under general anesthesia
