    Overweight, obesity and arterial hypertension in young and middle-aged military servants

    Aim. То study the prevalence of normal weight, overweight (OW) and obesity (O) in patients with arterial hypertension (AH) — contract military servants. To assess the impact of body weight variants into AH pathogenesis, risk factors (RFs) and associated clinical conditions (ACC) in this group of patients.Material and methods. In 349 AH patients, young and middle-aged males working as contract military servants (mean age 40,2±0,32 years), height (m) and weight (kg) were measured, with body mass index (BMI) calculation. Total cholesterol (TCH) level retinopathy and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) by Sokolov-Lyon index were also assessed. The control group included 665 contract military servants without AH.Results. In the main group of AH patients, OW and О were registered in 82,8%, significantly more often than in the controls. О was associated with significantly higher levels of systolic and diastolic blood pressure and TCH, comparing to those levels in AH patients with normal body weight.Conclusion. Among young and middle-aged men with AH and O, the majority of the patients were at high cardiovascular risk

    Vascular tone auto-regulation in young men with arterial hypertension: antihypertensive therapy effects

    Aim. To assess vaso-regulating endothelial function and vascular tone auto-regulation status, in regard to arterial hypertension (AH) duration and stage, as well as to investigate the respective effects of antihypertensive therapy (AHT), in young men with AH. Material and methods. The study included 49 men with Stage I-II AH (mean age 39,3±0,8 years), not treated before or treated irregularly. The controls were 22 men with normal blood pressure (BP) levels (mean age 37,5±1,7 years). The examination included 24-hour BP monitoring (BPM) and assessment of endothelium-dependent vasodilatation (EDVD) and time-adjusted mean arterial velocity (TAMX) in functional tests. Results. In young men with Stage I-II AH, in contrast to normotensive men, EDVD and reactivity indices (RIs) were decreased in functional TAMX assessment tests. These changes in EDVD and RIs were observed even in patients with relatively short AH duration or Stage I AH. Effective AHT resulted not only in target BP level achievement, but also in normalisation of EDVD and vascular tone auto-regulation. Conclusion. ACE inhibitors (lisinopril and enalapril) normalised EDVD and vascular tone auto-regulation parameters in young men with AH

    Pre-hypertension and cardiovascular risk in young men from the Far East Military Region

    Aim. To study the prevalence of arterial pre-hypertension (pre-AH), its risk factors (RFs) and associated clinical states (ACS) in young and middle-aged male officers — contract workers in the Far East Military Region (FEMR).Material and methods. In total, 1250 men — contract workers in the FEMR were examined (mean age 33,0±0,22 years), with 95,7% response rate (n=1197). The examination included questionnaire survey, blood pres­sure (BP) measurement, anthropometry and medical history analysis, with the following completion of the “BP monitoring participant chart”.Results. Among young men, most participants had optimal or normal BP. High normal BP was registered in every 10 th person. It total, 612 individuals were diagnosed with pre-AH (74,73%). Overweight (OW), obesity, and hyper­cholesterolemia were significantly more prevalent in pre-AH patients. Mean body mass index and total cholesterol levels were also higher in pre-AH individuals. Among pre-AH patients, 381 (62,25%) had low cardiovascular risk, and 13 (2,12%) — moderate cardiovascular risk.Conclusion. Pre-AH is widely prevalent in young male officers from the FEMR. Considering the professional specifics and high RF prevalence, these people need active monitoring by the military medical service
