Preroughening transitions in a model for Si and Ge (001) type crystal surfaces
The uniaxial structure of Si and Ge (001) facets leads to nontrivial
topological properties of steps and hence to interesting equilibrium phase
transitions. The disordered flat phase and the preroughening transition can be
stabilized without the need for step-step interactions. A model describing this
is studied numerically by transfer matrix type finite-size-scaling of interface
free energies. Its phase diagram contains a flat, rough, and disordered flat
phase, separated by roughening and preroughening transition lines. Our estimate
for the location of the multicritical point where the preroughening line merges
with the roughening line, predicts that Si and Ge (001) undergo preroughening

Chronic fatigue syndrome; an approach combining self-management with graded exercise to avoid exacerbations.
Controversy regarding the aetiology and treatment of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) continues to affect the medical professions. The Cochrane collaboration advises practitioners to implement graded exercise therapy for CFS sufferers using cognitive behavioural principles. In contrast there is evidence that exercise can induce symptom exacerbations in CFS where too vigorous exercise/activity promotes immune dysfunction, which in turn increases symptoms in patients with CFS. When designing and implementing an exercise programme it is important to be aware of both these seemingly opposing view points in order to deliver a programme without any detrimental effects on CFS pathophysiology. Using evidence from both the biological and clinical sciences, the present manuscript explains that graded exercise therapy for people with CFS can be safely undertaken without detrimental effects to the immune system. Exercise programs should be designed to cater for individual physical capabilities and should also account for the fluctuating nature of symptoms commonly reported by people with CFS. In line with cognitive behaviourally and graded exercise-based strategies, self-management for people with CFS involves encouraging the patients to pace their activities and respect their physical and mental limitations with the ultimate aim of improving their everyday function
On deflection fields, weak-focusing and strong-focusing storage rings for polar molecules
In this paper, we analyze electric deflection fields for polar molecules in
terms of a multipole expansion and derive a simple but rather insightful
expression for the force on the molecules. Ideally, a deflection field exerts a
strong, constant force in one direction, while the force in the other
directions is zero. We show how, by a proper choice of the expansion
coefficients, this ideal can be best approximated. We present a design for a
practical electrode geometry based on this analysis. By bending such a
deflection field into a circle, a simple storage ring can be created; the
direct analog of a weak-focusing cyclotron for charged particles. We show that
for realistic parameters a weak-focusing ring is only stable for molecules with
a very low velocity. A strong-focusing (alternating-gradient) storage ring can
be created by arranging many straight deflection fields in a circle and by
alternating the sign of the hexapole term between adjacent deflection fields.
The acceptance of this ring is numerically calculated for realistic parameters.
Such a storage might prove useful in experiments looking for an EDM of

Reconstructed Rough Growing Interfaces; Ridgeline Trapping of Domain Walls
We investigate whether surface reconstruction order exists in stationary
growing states, at all length scales or only below a crossover length, . The later would be similar to surface roughness in growing crystal
surfaces; below the equilibrium roughening temperature they evolve in a
layer-by-layer mode within a crossover length scale , but are always
rough at large length scales. We investigate this issue in the context of KPZ
type dynamics and a checker board type reconstruction, using the restricted
solid-on-solid model with negative mono-atomic step energies. This is a
topology where surface reconstruction order is compatible with surface
roughness and where a so-called reconstructed rough phase exists in
equilibrium. We find that during growth, reconstruction order is absent in the
thermodynamic limit, but exists below a crossover length , and that this local order fluctuates critically. Domain walls become
trapped at the ridge lines of the rough surface, and thus the reconstruction
order fluctuations are slaved to the KPZ dynamics
Sensitivity of rotational transitions in CH and CD to a possible variation of fundamental constants
The sensitivity of rotational transitions in CH and CD to a possible
variation of fundamental constants has been investigated. Largely enhanced
sensitivity coefficients are found for specific transitions which are due to
accidental degeneracies between the different fine-structure manifolds. These
degeneracies occur when the spin-orbit coupling constant is close to four times
the rotational constant. CH and particularly CD match this condition closely.
Unfortunately, an analysis of the transition strengths shows that the same
condition that leads to an enhanced sensitivity suppresses the transition
strength, making these transitions too weak to be of relevance for testing the
variation of fundamental constants over cosmological time scales. We propose a
test in CH based on the comparison between the rotational transitions between
the e and f components of the Omega'=1/2,J=1/2 and Omega'=3/2,J=3/2 levels at
532 and 536 GHz and other rotational or Lambda-doublet transitions in CH
involving the same absorbing ground levels. Such a test, to be performed by
radioastronomy of highly redshifted objects, is robust against systematic
effects
Ramsey-type microwave spectroscopy on CO ()
Using a Ramsey-type setup, the lambda-doublet transition in the level of the state of CO was measured to be 394 064 870(10)
Hz. In our molecular beam apparatus, a beam of metastable CO is prepared in a
single quantum level by expanding CO into vacuum and exciting the molecules
using a narrow-band UV laser system. After passing two microwave zones that are
separated by 50 cm, the molecules are state-selectively deflected and detected
1 meter downstream on a position sensitive detector. In order to keep the
molecules in a single level, a magnetic bias field is applied. We find
the field-free transition frequency by taking the average of the and transitions,
which have an almost equal but opposite Zeeman shift. The accuracy of this
proof-of-principle experiment is a factor of 100 more accurate than the
previous best value obtained for this transition
Competitive reactions and the cross-sales effects of advertising and promotion.
Abstract: How do competitors react to each other's price-promotion and advertising actions? How do these reactions influence the net sales impact we observe? We answer these questions by performing a large-scale empirical study of the short-run and long-run reactions to promotion and advertising shocks in over 400 consumer product categories, over a four-year time span.Competitive reaction can be passive, accommodating or retaliatory. We first develop a series of expectations on the type and intensity of reaction behavior, and on the moderators of this behavior. These expectations are assessed in two ways. First, vector-autoregressive models quantify the short-run and long-run effect of a promotion or advertising action on competitive sales and on competitive reactions. By cataloging the numerical results, we are able to formulate empirical generalizations of reaction behavior ('how do they react?'). Second, we estimate structural models of reaction intensity, in function of various market and competitive characteristics ('what are the drivers of reaction?'). Finally, by comparing our findings on reaction behavior with those on promotion and advertising effectiveness, we are able to evaluate competitive reaction behavior ('are they reacting as they should?').A major finding is that competitive reaction is predominantly passive. When it is present, it is usually retaliatory in the same instrument, but accommodating or retaliatory in a different instrument. There are very few long-run consequences of any type of reaction behavior. We also report on several moderating effects that are in line with expectations, and that support the presence of a certain amount of rationality in competitive reaction behavior.The net impact of the over-time effects of advertising and price-promotion attacks, competitive reactions and the sales effectiveness of each, is that competitors' sales are generally not affected, and especially not in the long run. We weigh the evidence that this sales neutrality is 'natural' (i.e., due to the nature of consumer response) versus 'managed' (i.e., due to the vigilance and effectiveness of competitors), and conclude in favor of the former.

Can exercise limits prevent post-exertional malaise in chronic fatigue syndrome? An uncontrolled clinical trial.
<b>Objective</b>: It was hypothesized that the use of exercise limits prevents symptom increases and worsening of their health status following a walking exercise in people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).
<b>Design</b>: An uncontrolled clinical trial (semi-experimental design).
<b>Setting</b>: Outpatient clinic of a university department.
<b>Subjects</b>: 24 patients with CFS.
<b>Interventions</b>: Subjects undertook a walking test with the two concurrent exercise limits. Each subject walked at an <i>intensity</i> where the maximum heart rate was determined by heart rate corresponding to the respiratory exchange ratio =1.0 derived from a previous sub-maximal exercise test and for a duration calculated from how long each patient felt they were able to walk.
<b>Main outcome measures</b>: The Short Form 36 Health Survey or SF-36, the CFS Symptom List, and the CFS-Activities and Participation Questionnaire were filled in prior to, immediately and 24 hours post-exercise.
<b>Results</b>: The fatigue increase observed immediately post-exercise (p=0.006) returned to pre-exercise levels 24 hours post-exercise. The increase in pain observed immediately post-exercise was retained at 24 hours post-exercise (p=0.03). Fourteen of 24 subjects experienced a clinically meaningful change in bodily pain (change of SF-36 bodily pain score ³10). Six of 24 participants indicated that the exercise bout had slightly worsened their health status, and 2 of 24 had a clinically meaningful decrease in vitality (change of SF-36 vitality score ³20). There was no change in activity limitations/participation restrictions.
<b>Conclusion</b>: It was shown that the use of exercise limits (limiting both the intensity and duration of exercise) prevents important health status changes following a walking exercise in people with CFS, but was unable to prevent short-term symptom increases
Measuring Short- and Long-run Promotional Effectiveness on Scanner Data Using Persistence Modeling
The use of price promotions to stimulate brand and firm performance is increasing. We discuss how (i) the availability of longer scanner data time series, and (ii) persistence modeling, have lead to greater insights into the dynamic effects of price promotions, as one can now quantify their immediate, short-run, and long-run effectiveness. We review recent methodological developments, and illustrate how the analysis of numerous brands and product categories has resulted in various empirical generalizations.
