In October 1994, the KTB borehole reached its final depth of 9101 m. With this the Continental Deep Drilling Programme (KTB) of the Federal Republic of Germany entered its final stage. In this phase, the results of the drilling operating will be evaluated and interpreted against the background of bedrock analyses in consideration of the scientific goals of the project. This report contains 18 contributions on the geology and petrology of the KTB borehole and its vicinity. KTB Hauptbohrung. Results of geoscientific investigation in the KTB field laboratory: 0-9101 m Final report

    No full text
After finishing the drilling activities in the KTB Oberpfalz HB at a final depth of 9101 m, the scope of this report is to give an overview of the results of scientific investigations performed at the drilling site of the KTB Oberpfalz HB. It summarizes the research activities in the so called field laboratory and includes chemical, mineralogical, geophysical and geological investigations. Although some scientific results of the field laboratory have already been published to a depth of 7220 m in KTB Report 92-2 and KTB Report 93-2, this report will describe the complete section of the KTB-HB. Each chapter gives a short compilation of data from the surface to a depth of 7220 m with references for further and deeper information and in a second part a detailed description of the depth interval 7220-9101 m (FS). Also enclosed is a geological profile that will provide the reader with important geological, mineralogical, geophysical as well as geochemical data plotted versus depth at a scale of 1:2000 and is a complement to the already published logging-report. The 6th annual colloquium of the Priority Program 'Kontinentales Tiefbohrprogramm der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (KTB)', established by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), was held in Giessen. Currently, over 350 scientists from more than 50 institutes are working on KTB samples and logging data within the framework of this program. At present, the DFG funds some 73 KTB-related research projects. In addition, almost 50 scientific groups in 12 different countries are involved in the KTB project. This report provides an overview of all recent research activities. Part A summarizes the results obtained in the KTB field laboratory, at the drillsite in Windischeschenbach, Bavaria. Part B deals with the complete spectrum of scientific studies carried out by the different working groups. Part C introduces aspects of drilling technology, the drilling mud system, borehole measurements, data acquisition and the KTB information system. An outlook on planned future investigations, after completion of drilling operations, is also given.
