T. E. Harris and branching processes
T. E. Harris was a pioneer par excellence in many fields of probability
theory. In this paper, we give a brief survey of the many fundamental
contributions of Harris to the theory of branching processes, starting with his
doctoral work at Princeton in the late forties and culminating in his

Multimodal Supervised Exercise Training Is Effective in Improving Long Term Walking Performance in Patients with Symptomatic Lower Extremity Peripheral Artery Disease.
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a multimodal supervised exercise training (SET) program on walking performance for 12 months in patients with symptomatic lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD). Consecutive patients with Fontaine stage II PAD participating in the SET program of our hospital were retrospectively investigated. Walking performance, assessed using a treadmill with measures of the pain-free and maximal walking distance (PFWD, MWD, respectively), and 6 min walking distance (6MWD), were tested before and following SET, as well as at 6 and 12 months after SET completion. Ninety-three symptomatic patients with PAD (65.0 ± 1.1 y) were included in the study. Following SET, the walking performance significantly improved (PFWD: +145%, p ≤ 0.001; MWD: +97%, p ≤ 0.001; 6MWD: +15%, p ≤ 0.001). At 6 months, PFWD (+257%, p ≤ 0.001), MWD (+132%, p ≤ 0.001), and 6MWD (+11%, p ≤ 0.001) remained significantly improved compared with the pre-SET condition. At 12 months, PFWD (+272%, p ≤ 0.001), MWD (+130%, p ≤ 0.001), and 6MWD (+11%, p ≤ 0.001) remained significantly improved compared with the pre-training condition. The walking performance remained significantly improved in both women and men for up to 12 months (p ≤ 0.001). Multimodal SET is effective at improving walking performance in symptomatic patients with PAD, with improvements lasting up to 12 months
Large deviations for a damped telegraph process
In this paper we consider a slight generalization of the damped telegraph
process in Di Crescenzo and Martinucci (2010). We prove a large deviation
principle for this process and an asymptotic result for its level crossing
probabilities (as the level goes to infinity). Finally we compare our results
with the analogous well-known results for the standard telegraph process
Selenium-Binding Protein 1 Indicates Myocardial Stress and Risk for Adverse Outcome in Cardiac Surgery
Selenium-binding protein 1 (SELENBP1) is an intracellular protein that has been detected in the circulation in response to myocardial infarction. Hypoxia and cardiac surgery affect selenoprotein expression and selenium (Se) status. For this reason, we decided to analyze circulating SELENBP1 concentrations in patients (n = 75) necessitating cardioplegia and a cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) during the course of the cardiac surgery. Serum samples were collected at seven time-points spanning the full surgical process. SELENBP1 was quantified by a highly sensitive newly developed immunological assay. Serum concentrations of SELENBP1 increased markedly during the intervention and showed a positive association with the duration of ischemia (ρ = 0.6, p < 0.0001). Elevated serum SELENBP1 concentrations at 1 h after arrival at the intensive care unit (post-surgery) were predictive to identify patients at risk of adverse outcome (death, bradycardia or cerebral ischemia, "endpoint 1"; OR 29.9, CI 3.3-268.8, p = 0.00027). Circulating SELENBP1 during intervention (2 min after reperfusion or 15 min after weaning from the CPB) correlated positively with an established marker of myocardial infarction (CK-MB) measured after the intervention (each with ρ = 0.5, p < 0.0001). We concluded that serum concentrations of SELENBP1 were strongly associated with cardiac arrest and the duration of myocardial ischemia already early during surgery, thereby constituting a novel and promising quantitative marker for myocardial hypoxia, with a high potential to improve diagnostics and prediction in combination with the established clinical parameters
On chaos in mean field spin glasses
We study the correlations between two equilibrium states of SK spin glasses
at different temperatures or magnetic fields. The question, presiously
investigated by Kondor and Kondor and V\'egs\"o, is approached here
constraining two copies of the same system at different external parameters to
have a fixed overlap. We find that imposing an overlap different from the
minimal one implies an extensive cost in free energy. This confirms by a
different method the Kondor's finding that equilibrium states corresponding to
different values of the external parameters are completely uncorrelated. We
also consider the Generalized Random Energy Model of Derrida as an example of
system with strong correlations among states at different temperatures.Comment: 19 pages, Late
Temperature Chaos in Two-Dimensional Ising Spin Glasses with Binary Couplings: a Further Case for Universality
We study temperature chaos in a two-dimensional Ising spin glass with random
quenched bimodal couplings, by an exact computation of the partition functions
on large systems. We study two temperature correlators from the total free
energy and from the domain wall free energy: in the second case we detect a
chaotic behavior. We determine and discuss the chaos exponent and the fractal

Numerical Study of Spin and Chiral Order in a Two-Dimensional XY Spin Glass
The two dimensional XY spin glass is studied numerically by a finite size
scaling method at T=0 in the vortex representation which allows us to compute
the exact (in principle) spin and chiral domain wall energies. We confirm
earlier predictions that there is no glass phase at any finite T. Our results
strongly support the conjecture that both spin and chiral order have the same
correlation length exponent . We obtain preliminary results

Structure and peculiarities of the (8 x n)-type Si(001) surface prepared in a molecular-beam epitaxy chamber: a scanning tunneling microscopy study
A clean Si(001) surface thermally purified in an ultrahigh vacuum
molecular-beam epitaxy chamber has been investigated by means of scanning
tunneling microscopy. The morphological peculiarities of the Si(001) surface
have been explored in detail. The classification of the surface structure
elements has been carried out, the dimensions of the elements have been
measured, and the relative heights of the surface relief have been determined.
A reconstruction of the Si(001) surface prepared in the molecular-beam epitaxy
chamber has been found to be (8 x n). A model of the Si(001)-(8 x n) surface
