Multidifferential study of identified charged hadron distributions in ZZ-tagged jets in proton-proton collisions at s=\sqrt{s}=13 TeV

Jet fragmentation functions are measured for the first time in proton-proton collisions for charged pions, kaons, and protons within jets recoiling against a ZZ boson. The charged-hadron distributions are studied longitudinally and transversely to the jet direction for jets with transverse momentum 20 <pT<100< p_{\textrm{T}} < 100 GeV and in the pseudorapidity range 2.5<η<42.5 < \eta < 4. The data sample was collected with the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.64 fb−1^{-1}. Triple differential distributions as a function of the hadron longitudinal momentum fraction, hadron transverse momentum, and jet transverse momentum are also measured for the first time. This helps constrain transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation functions. Differences in the shapes and magnitudes of the measured distributions for the different hadron species provide insights into the hadronization process for jets predominantly initiated by light quarks.Comment: All figures and tables, along with machine-readable versions and any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://cern.ch/lhcbproject/Publications/p/LHCb-PAPER-2022-013.html (LHCb public pages

    Study of the B−→Λc+Λˉc−K−B^{-} \to \Lambda_{c}^{+} \bar{\Lambda}_{c}^{-} K^{-} decay

The decay B−→Λc+Λˉc−K−B^{-} \to \Lambda_{c}^{+} \bar{\Lambda}_{c}^{-} K^{-} is studied in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb−1\mathrm{fb}^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. In the Λc+K−\Lambda_{c}^+ K^{-} system, the Ξc(2930)0\Xi_{c}(2930)^{0} state observed at the BaBar and Belle experiments is resolved into two narrower states, Ξc(2923)0\Xi_{c}(2923)^{0} and Ξc(2939)0\Xi_{c}(2939)^{0}, whose masses and widths are measured to be m(Ξc(2923)0)=2924.5±0.4±1.1 MeV,m(Ξc(2939)0)=2938.5±0.9±2.3 MeV,Γ(Ξc(2923)0)=0004.8±0.9±1.5 MeV,Γ(Ξc(2939)0)=0011.0±1.9±7.5 MeV, m(\Xi_{c}(2923)^{0}) = 2924.5 \pm 0.4 \pm 1.1 \,\mathrm{MeV}, \\ m(\Xi_{c}(2939)^{0}) = 2938.5 \pm 0.9 \pm 2.3 \,\mathrm{MeV}, \\ \Gamma(\Xi_{c}(2923)^{0}) = \phantom{000}4.8 \pm 0.9 \pm 1.5 \,\mathrm{MeV},\\ \Gamma(\Xi_{c}(2939)^{0}) = \phantom{00}11.0 \pm 1.9 \pm 7.5 \,\mathrm{MeV}, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The results are consistent with a previous LHCb measurement using a prompt Λc+K−\Lambda_{c}^{+} K^{-} sample. Evidence of a new Ξc(2880)0\Xi_{c}(2880)^{0} state is found with a local significance of 3.8 σ3.8\,\sigma, whose mass and width are measured to be 2881.8±3.1±8.5 MeV2881.8 \pm 3.1 \pm 8.5\,\mathrm{MeV} and 12.4±5.3±5.8 MeV12.4 \pm 5.3 \pm 5.8 \,\mathrm{MeV}, respectively. In addition, evidence of a new decay mode Ξc(2790)0→Λc+K−\Xi_{c}(2790)^{0} \to \Lambda_{c}^{+} K^{-} is found with a significance of 3.7 σ3.7\,\sigma. The relative branching fraction of B−→Λc+Λˉc−K−B^{-} \to \Lambda_{c}^{+} \bar{\Lambda}_{c}^{-} K^{-} with respect to the B−→D+D−K−B^{-} \to D^{+} D^{-} K^{-} decay is measured to be 2.36±0.11±0.22±0.252.36 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.25, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third originates from the branching fractions of charm hadron decays.Comment: All figures and tables, along with any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://cern.ch/lhcbproject/Publications/p/LHCb-PAPER-2022-028.html (LHCb public pages

The ratios of branching fractions R(D∗)≡B(Bˉ→D∗τ−Μˉτ)/B(Bˉ→D∗Ό−ΜˉΌ)\mathcal{R}(D^{*})\equiv\mathcal{B}(\bar{B}\to D^{*}\tau^{-}\bar{\nu}_{\tau})/\mathcal{B}(\bar{B}\to D^{*}\mu^{-}\bar{\nu}_{\mu}) and R(D0)≡B(B−→D0τ−Μˉτ)/B(B−→D0Ό−ΜˉΌ)\mathcal{R}(D^{0})\equiv\mathcal{B}(B^{-}\to D^{0}\tau^{-}\bar{\nu}_{\tau})/\mathcal{B}(B^{-}\to D^{0}\mu^{-}\bar{\nu}_{\mu}) are measured, assuming isospin symmetry, using a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to 3.0 fb−1{ }^{-1} of integrated luminosity recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. The tau lepton is identified in the decay mode τ−→Ό−ΜτΜˉΌ\tau^{-}\to\mu^{-}\nu_{\tau}\bar{\nu}_{\mu}. The measured values are R(D∗)=0.281±0.018±0.024\mathcal{R}(D^{*})=0.281\pm0.018\pm0.024 and R(D0)=0.441±0.060±0.066\mathcal{R}(D^{0})=0.441\pm0.060\pm0.066, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The correlation between these measurements is ρ=−0.43\rho=-0.43. Results are consistent with the current average of these quantities and are at a combined 1.9 standard deviations from the predictions based on lepton flavor universality in the Standard Model.Comment: All figures and tables, along with any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://cern.ch/lhcbproject/Publications/p/LHCb-PAPER-2022-039.html (LHCb public pages

6-IODOACETAMIDOFLUORESCEIN LABELLING TO ASSESS THE STATE OF SULPHYDRYL GROUPS AFTER THERMAL STABILIZATION OF ISOLATED NUCLEI

    No full text
Isolated nuclei and nuclear matrices, prepared from mouse erythroleukaemia cells, were reacted with the sulphhydryl-specific dye 6-iodoacetamidofluorescein. To determine whether in vitro formation of disulphide bonds might play a role in the nuclear matrix stabilization triggered by exposure of isolated nuclei to the physiological temperature of 37 degrees C, a variety of techniques were employed to assess the state of cysteinyl residues after such an incubation. Both flow cytometry and confocal microscopy quantitative analysis did not reveal major differences in the fluorescence intensity of nuclei incubated at 37 degrees C in comparison with those maintained at 0 degrees C. Confocal scanning laser microscopy revealed that 6-iodoacetamidofluorescein labelled a fibrogranular network in isolated nuclei. The fluorescent pattern of the network was not affected by a 37 degrees C exposure of nuclei. However, such a network was not detectable in isolated nuclear matrices, thus suggesting a possible protein re-arrangement during matrix preparation. Sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of fluorescent-labelled nuclear proteins showed no difference between heat-exposed and control samples. We conclude that oxidation of cysteinyl residues is not a major factor leading to the stabilization of nuclei incubated at 37 degrees C

Application of LCA methodology in the assessment of a pyrolysis process for tyres recycling

    No full text
According to recent estimations, the total yearly amount of end-of-life tyres (ELTs) arising in Europe exceeds 3 million tons; more than 95% are managed through mechanical and thermal treatments because ELTs represent a useful resource both of materials and energy. For this purpose, the goal of the present work is the assessment of the environmental impacts of a novel pyrolysis process and the comparison with alternative ELTs valorisation or disposal scenarios. Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) methodology has been applied to determine the most critical stages of the process under study, assessing the environmental benefits arising from the recovery of material and energy and the impacts, compared to the technologies already on the market, taking into account treatment processes, materials recovery and disposal of wastewater/residues. The chosen functional unit (FU) is 1 ton of ELTs treated by the plant. The different scenarios investigated have been analyzed through ReCiPe impact assessment method. Considering the pre-treatment, the pyrolysis process results in a lower environmental impact compared to the others, with the 1/3, 1/10 and 1/20 of energy consumption compared to the alternatives considered. The analysis of pyrolysis process showed that the avoided impact due to the recovery of carbon black, steel, oil and syngas exceeds the impact generated by the process, related to the energy consumption and to the emissions into the atmosphere. Compared to other energy-recovery scenarios, a greater advantage results from the pyrolysis process, mostly due to the recovery of valuable materials. Then, comparing it to other material recovery scenarios, a variable influence is given by the different options of recovery, considering which materials could actually be replaced and the commercial value of the materials that is replaced

THE IMPAIRMENT OF NATURAL KILLER FUNCTION IN THE HEALTHY AGED IS DUE TO A POST-BINDING DEFICIENT MECHANISM

    No full text
In order to study the fine mechanisms that underlie the impairment of non-MHC-restricted cytolytic activity which occurs during human aging, we examined by multiparametric flow cytometry the binding and lytic activities of human natural killer cells. The flow analysis revealed a striking increase of the CD16+8- subset, together with a significant decrease of CD8bright cells and total T cells (CD3+). Aging had no influence on the CD8dim subset. The total lytic activity expressed by PBL as well as their binding efficiency to K562 targets were moderately but not significantly increased in the elderly. In contrast, the cytotoxicity of the single target-bound natural killer cell (i.e., lytic efficiency) was deeply impaired in aged subjects, suggesting that the NK functional impairment observed in aging is located at postbinding level

[Peritoneal dialysis in the Lazio region: results from 2017 regional audit]

    No full text
In 2011, a first peritoneal dialysis audit was held in the Lazio region to analyze the problems hindering the spread of this method and to improve the quality of care through the sharing of best practices across Centers. A scientific board was therefore set up, representing all the Centers offering PD, in order to assess clinical effectiveness using KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) and to quantify the objectives to be achieved. The analysis made it possible to identify the main problems and take action, all the while monitoring progress through KPIs. A second audit was carried out in 2017 and the collected data was analyzed and compared with the findings of the previous study. Overall, data showed an increase in prevalence, although the incidence showed a slight decrease. Indicators on the change of dialysis treatment, the dropout from domiciliary treatment and the incidence of late referral appeared stable over time. A slight improvement was observed in clinical data on peritonitis and on the length of hospitalization. All participants in the audit declared that sharing and discussing clinical practices had been really useful. In addition, through the drafting of practical documents (guides for patients, guidance on informed consent, protocols of clinical follow-up), a number of tools have been provided to ensure a uniformly high level of care across the different regional Centers
