WOS: 000412085400040In this work, the evaluation of AC loss of the pancake coils wound by HTS-coated conductors, by employing the finite element method in 2D, is presented. The transport current loss of the superconducting tape and the eddy current loss of the copper stabilizer as a function of the amplitude for four frequencies of the applied current are examined numerically by utilizing a newly developed calculation method based on the A - V formulation embedded in COMSOL Multiphysics software with an AC/DC module. The number of the coil turn is 10, and the radius is about 60 mm. The superconducting layer width and height in the simulations are 12 and 1 mm, respectively. The width and height of the copper layers are 12 and 80 mm, respectively. The critical current density of tapes is taken as 300 A.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK)Turkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arastirma Kurumu (TUBITAK) [114F424]This study is supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) under the grant number 114F424

WOS: 000376104100001In a two-layer superconducting cable, we numerically investigated the effect of magnetic properties and alignment of the substrates of the tapes on the stress distribution induced by a very high transported electric current. The calculations are carried out for two tapes, with one being on top of the other. Sharp peaks of induced stress very close to the edges of the tapes are observed. When nonmagnetic substrates are used, the stress distributions on the tapes are almost identical, as well as being much lower than those in the cases involving ferromagnetic (FM) substrates. When the tapes are arranged face to face with FM substrates on the outer sides, the stress distribution arisen in the outer tape is considerably higher than that in the inner tape. In contrast, flipping both layers, so that the tapes are back to back, gives rise to a much lower stress over the outer tape than that over the inner tape.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK)Turkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arastirma Kurumu (TUBITAK) [110T876]This work was supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) under Grant 110T876. Protein kinase C Inhibitors selectively modulate dynamics of cell adhesion molecules and cell death in human colon cancer cells

During development of colon cancer, Protein Kinase Cs (PKCs) are involved in regulation of many genes controlling several cellular mechanisms. Here, we examined the changes in cell adhesion molecules and PKCs for colorectal cancer progression. We identified that PKCs affected expression of EpCAM, claudins, tetraspanins. Treatment with low concentrations of PKC inhibitors resulted in decreased cell viability. In addition, immunoblotting and qRT-PCR analysis showed that apoptosis was inhibited while autophagy was induced by PKC inhibition in colon cancer cells. Furthermore, we observed decreased levels of intracellular Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), lipid peroxidation and protein carbonyl, confirming the ROS-induced apoptosis. Taken together, our results reveal that PKC signalling modulates not only cell adhesion dynamics but also cell death-related mechanisms.Abbreviations: PKC: Protein Kinase C; EpCAM: Epithelial cell adhesion molecule; FBS: fetal bovine serum; MTT: 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide); CAM: cell adhesion molecule; ROS: reactive oxygen specie

WOS: 000242658400003PubMed ID: 16969640We have previously demonstrated that, ACE D allele may be related with a better performance in short duration aerobic endurance in a homogeneous cohort with similar training backgrounds. We aimed to study the variation in the short-duration aerobic performance development amongst ACE genotypes in response to identical training programs in homogeneous populations. The study group consisted of 186 male Caucasian non-elite Turkish army recruits. All subjects had undergone an identical training program with double training session per day and 6 days a week for 6 months. Performances for middle distance runs (2,400 m) were evaluated on an athletics track before and after the training period. ACE gene polymorphisms were studied by PCR analysis. The distribution of genotypes in the whole group was 16.7% II, n = 31; 46.2% ID, n = 86; 37.1% DD, n = 69. Subjects with ACE DD genotype had significantly higher enhancement than the ID (P ACE ID > ACE II (P value for Pearson chi(2) = 0.461 and P value for linear by linear association = 0.001). ACE DD genotype seems to have an advantage in development in short-duration aerobic performance. This data in unison with the data that we have obtained from homogenous cohorts previously is considered as an existence of threshold for initiation of ACE I allele effectiveness in endurance performance. This threshold may be anywhere between 10 and 30 min with lasting maximal exercises

WOS: 000463183800004Background and Design: We aimed to evaluate whether alopecia areata (AA) patients had hearing loss with pure-tone audiometry. Materials and Methods: In the study, 48 patients with AA and 39 healthy volunteers were induded. All the patients were examined by the otorhinolaryngologist and audiometric examinations were performed using a pure-tone audiometer. Pure-tone thresholds for both ears were evaluated at frequencies of 250-8000 Hz for air conduction. Results: Sensorineural hypoacusis was found in 18.8% of AA patients and 10.3% of control subjects. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups (p=0.422). The pure-tone average for the right ear and the left ear in AA patients was 10.89 +/- 5.45 and 10.50 +/- 5.98, respectively. In control subjects, it was 10.25 +/- 3.43 for the right ear and 10.23 +/- 5.46 for the left ear. Pure-tone averages for both ears in AA patients were higher than controls; but the differences were not statistically significant (p=0.829 and p=0.526, respectively). When we compared hearing thresholds for both ear for frequencies, there were not any significant differences between AA patients and controls (p>0.05). Conclusion: There was no difference in terms of hearing loss between AA patients and healthy controls

The Effect of Silicone Tube and Silicone Tube plus Hyaluronic Acid Application on Adhesion Formation in Experimental Peri- and Epi-neurorrhaphy in A Rat Model

Following neurorrhaphy in Wistar albino rats with experimental sciatic nerve cut, the effectiveness of solely silicone tube (ST) and ST plus hyaluronic acid application on preventing fibrosis was clinically and histopathologically examined. After a total nerve cut is created in sciatic nerve, interfascicular and epineural anastomosis was used. While only anastomosis was applied for the first group (Control Group), for the second group (ST Group) anastomosis + silicone tube and for the third group (ST + HA Group) anastomosis + silicone tube + hyaluronic acid (HA) were applied. Animals in each group were divided into 2 sub-groups and macroscopic and histopathological examinations were conducted on the 30th and 60th postoperative day. On day 30 of the study all the animals had problematic walks. On the 60th day while animals in groups ST and ST + HA were walking normally, the problem was still going on for the control group. In the postmortem macroscopic examinations performed in the control group on the 30th and 60th days an irregular morphology and adhesion to surrounding in nerve tissue were seen. Whereas in group ST, in the anastomosis line within the tube, scar tissue which was clearer on the 60th day was observed, in group ST + HA it was seen that nerve anastomosis line was smooth on the 30th and 60th days. As a consequence, the reduction in myelin thickness and the increase in degenerated myelin for groups ST and ST + HA in 30 day show that HA does not create a positive effect on axon regeneration in the short run, on the other hand, the reduction in myelin degenerated along with the increase of axon myelin thickness and axon cross section areas in groups ST and ST + HA in day 60 has shown that silicone tube and HA application creates a positive impact on myelination in the long run
