Elevated atmospheric sulfur levels off the Peruvian coast
Elevated levels of non‐sea‐salt sulfate and SO2 in samples collected off the west coast of South America indicate that there is a major source of atmospheric sulfur in the region of southern Peru and northern Chile. During a 1983 cruise, observed concentrations of non‐sea‐salt sulfur, SO2, selenium, arsenic, and antimony were comparable to levels reported for moderately polluted urban air. In contrast, methanesulfonic acid levels were typical of coastal marine air. Clearly, the elevated atmospheric sulfur levels in this region cannot be ascribed to oceanic organosulfur emissions. The major inputs are tentatively attributed to the smelting of sulfide ores which is a major industry in this region. The transport of smelter derived aerosols to this region may have a number of consequences for the atmospheric and oceanic chemistry of the Peruvian upwelling area
Acute stress impairs sensorimotor gating via the neurosteroid allopregnanolone in the prefrontal cortex
Ample evidence indicates that environmental stress impairs information processing, yet the underlying mechanisms remain partially elusive. We showed that, in several rodent models of psychopathology, the neurosteroid allopregnanolone (AP) reduces the prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the startle, a well-validated index of sensorimotor gating. Since this GABAA receptor activator is synthesized in response to acute stress, we hypothesized its participation in stress-induced PPI deficits. Systemic AP administration reduced PPI in C57BL/6J mice and Long-Evans, but not Sprague-Dawley rats. These effects were reversed by isoallopregnanolone (isoAP), an endogenous AP antagonist, and the GABAA receptor antagonist bicuculline and mimicked by AP infusions in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Building on these findings, we tested AP's implication in the PPI deficits produced by several complementary regimens of acute and short-term stress (footshock, restraint, predator exposure, and sleep deprivation). PPI was reduced by acute footshock, sleep deprivation as well as the combination of restraint and predator exposure in a time- and intensity-dependent fashion. Acute stress increased AP concentrations in the mPFC, and its detrimental effects on PPI were countered by systemic and intra-mPFC administration of isoAP. These results collectively indicate that acute stress impairs PPI by increasing AP content in the mPFC. The confirmation of these mechanisms across distinct animal models and several acute stressors strongly supports the translational value of these findings and warrants future research on the role of AP in information processing
Diet and exercise intervention adherence and health-related outcomes among older long-term breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer survivors
BACKGROUND:
Diet and exercise interventions for cancer survivors result in health benefits; however, few studies have examined health outcomes in relation to adherence.
PURPOSE:
We examined associations between adherence to components of a diet-exercise intervention and survivors' physical and mental health.
METHODS:
A randomized controlled trial tested a telephone and mailed print intervention among 641 older, overweight, long-term survivors of breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer. Dietary and exercise behaviors were assessed at 14 time points throughout the year-long intervention; health outcomes were examined postintervention.
RESULTS:
Telephone session attendance had significant indirect relationships with health outcomes through intervention-period exercise and dietary behavior. Attendance showed positive indirect relationships with physical function (β = 0.11, p < 0.05), basic and advanced lower extremity function (β = 0.10, p < 0.05/β = 0.09, p < 0.05), and mental health (β = 0.05, p < 0.05), and a negative indirect relationship with body mass index (β = -0.06, p < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONS:
Session attendance is vital in facilitating improvement in health behaviors and attendant outcomes (Clinicaltrials.gov number NCT00303875)
Knowledge Transfer and Teaching Public Administration: the Academy Model
Since the beginnings of Public Administration in the US and its accompanying education in other parts of the world, government and policy have become more complex. The education in Public Administration created a professional pathway to public service. The addition of education to Public Administration came out of the Progressive Movement in the United States to make knowledge in Public Administration more important in the face of corruption brought on by patronage appointments. When nonprofits became part the US public sector as elsewhere along with nonprofit healthcare, the complexity expanded enormously, requiring professionals to know more in what has become a multidisciplinary field of study. Given the diversity and complexity of the public sector and the need for Public Administration to embrace more knowledge from many disciplines, it stands to reason that an earlier start on the education portion of Public Administration or a pathway would be beneficial. A model of early Public Administration knowledge transfer is described and illustrated below. The Academy described is based on the US career pathways and high school academies as part of the school to work educational movement. The success of the combination of these two areas will also be pointed out in the academy described. Translation of lessons learned from the Acdemy to Europe and Asia are also considered
Inverse Modeling for MEG/EEG data
We provide an overview of the state-of-the-art for mathematical methods that
are used to reconstruct brain activity from neurophysiological data. After a
brief introduction on the mathematics of the forward problem, we discuss
standard and recently proposed regularization methods, as well as Monte Carlo
techniques for Bayesian inference. We classify the inverse methods based on the
underlying source model, and discuss advantages and disadvantages. Finally we
describe an application to the pre-surgical evaluation of epileptic patients.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figur
On the Whitehead spectrum of the circle
The seminal work of Waldhausen, Farrell and Jones, Igusa, and Weiss and
Williams shows that the homotopy groups in low degrees of the space of
homeomorphisms of a closed Riemannian manifold of negative sectional curvature
can be expressed as a functor of the fundamental group of the manifold. To
determine this functor, however, it remains to determine the homotopy groups of
the topological Whitehead spectrum of the circle. The cyclotomic trace of B
okstedt, Hsiang, and Madsen and a theorem of Dundas, in turn, lead to an
expression for these homotopy groups in terms of the equivariant homotopy
groups of the homotopy fiber of the map from the topological Hochschild
T-spectrum of the sphere spectrum to that of the ring of integers induced by
the Hurewicz map. We evaluate the latter homotopy groups, and hence, the
homotopy groups of the topological Whitehead spectrum of the circle in low
degrees. The result extends earlier work by Anderson and Hsiang and by Igusa
and complements recent work by Grunewald, Klein, and Macko.Comment: 52 page
Coping Skills Practice and Symptom Change: A Secondary Analysis of a Pilot Telephone Symptom Management Intervention for Lung Cancer Patients and their Family Caregivers
Context
Little research has explored coping skills practice in relation to symptom outcomes in psychosocial interventions for cancer patients and their family caregivers.
Objectives
To examine associations of coping skills practice to symptom change in a telephone symptom management (TSM) intervention delivered concurrently to lung cancer patients and their caregivers.
Methods
This study was a secondary analysis of a randomized pilot trial. Data were examined from patient-caregiver dyads (n=51 dyads) that were randomized to the TSM intervention. Guided by social cognitive theory, TSM involved four weekly sessions where dyads were taught coping skills including: a mindfulness exercise, guided imagery, pursed lips breathing, cognitive restructuring, problem solving, emotion-focused coping, and assertive communication. Symptoms were assessed, including patient and caregiver psychological distress and patient pain interference, fatigue interference, and distress related to breathlessness. Multiple regression analyses examined associations of coping skills practice during the intervention to symptoms at 6 weeks post-intervention.
Results
For patients, greater practice of assertive communication was associated with less pain interference (β=-0.45, p=0.02) and psychological distress (β=-0.36, p=0.047); for caregivers, greater practice of guided imagery was associated with less psychological distress (β=-0.30, p=0.01). Unexpectedly, for patients, greater practice of a mindfulness exercise was associated with higher pain (β=0.47, p=0.07) and fatigue interference (β=0.49, p=0.04); greater practice of problem solving was associated with higher distress related to breathlessness (β=0.56, p=0.01) and psychological distress (β=0.36, p=0.08).
Conclusion
Findings suggest the effectiveness of TSM may have been reduced by competing effects of certain coping skills. Future interventions should consider focusing on assertive communication training for patients and guided imagery for caregivers
Multi-Channel SQUID System for MEG and Ultra-Low-Field MRI
A seven-channel system capable of performing both magnetoencephalography
(MEG) and ultra-low-field magnetic resonance imaging (ULF MRI) is described.
The system consists of seven second-order SQUID gradiometers with 37 mm
diameter and 60 mm baseline, having magnetic field resolution of 1.2-2.8
fT/rtHz. It also includes four sets of coils for 2-D Fourier imaging with
pre-polarization. The system's MEG performance was demonstrated by measurements
of auditory evoked response. The system was also used to obtain a multi-channel
2-D image of a whole human hand at the measurement field of 46 microtesla with
