    Relationship between Soviet snow and Korean rainfall

    In this study the statistical relationship between winter-spring Soviet snow depth and summer monsoon rainfall over South Korea has been investigated by lag correlation correlation coefficients and composite analysis. Data for the 1966-95 period are used. Results reveal that the winter/springtime snow depth over western Eurasia (over Kazakhstan) is negatively related, whereas the snow depth over eastern Eurasia (over Manchuria-eastern Siberia) is positively related with Korean monsoon rainfall. The dipole correlation pattern suggests that heavy snow over eastern Eurasia and light snow over western Eurasia is favourable, whereas the reverse situation is unfavourable for monsoon activity over South Korea. The NCEP-NCAR re-analyses data reveal that the dipole correlation configuration is indicative of a mid-latitude long-wave pattern with an anomalous ridge over north Asia during the winter prior to a weak Korean monsoon and an anomalous trough prior to a strong monsoon. The re-analyses data further suggest that the position, shape, and strength of the summertime North Pacific subtropical high and the low-level jet over the East Asian sector could be considerably influenced by the snow distribution over Eurasia

    AROS Is a Significant Biomarker for Tumor Aggressiveness in Non-cirrhotic Hepatocellular Carcinoma

    Despite a low risk of liver failure and preserved liver function, non-cirrhotic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has a poor prognosis. In the current study, we evaluated an active regulator of SIRT1 (AROS) as a prognostic biomarker in non-cirrhotic HCC. mRNA levels of AROS were measured in tumor and non-tumor tissues obtained from 283 non-cirrhotic HCC patients. AROS expression was exclusively up-regulated in recurrent tissues from the non-cirrhotic HCC patients (P = 0.015) and also in tumor tissues irrespective of tumor stage (P < 0.001) or BCLC stage (P < 0.001). High mRNA levels of AROS were statistically significantly associated with tumor stage (P < 0.001), BCLC stage (P = 0.007), alpha fetoprotein (AFP) level (P = 0.013), microvascular invasion (P = 0.001), tumor size (P = 0.036), and portal vein invasion (P = 0.005). Kaplan-Meir curve analysis demonstrated that HCC patients with higher AROS levels had shorter disease-free survival (DFS) in both the short-term (P < 0.001) and long-term (P = 0.005) compared to those with low AROS. Cox regression analysis demonstrated that AROS is a significant predictor for DFS along with large tumor size, tumor multiplicity, vascular invasion, and poor tumor differentiation, which are the known prognostic factors.     IL-12p40 Homodimer Ameliorates Experimental Autoimmune Arthritis

    IL-23 is the key cytokine that induces the expansion of Th17 cells. It is composed of p19 and p40 subunits of IL-12. The p40 subunit binds competitively to the receptor of IL-23 and blocks its activity. Our aim was to assess the preventive and therapeutic effect of the IL-12p40 homodimer (p40)(2) subunit in autoimmune arthritis animal models. In the current study, using IL-1R antagonist-knockout mice and a collagen-induced arthritis model, we investigated the suppressive effect of (p40)(2) on inflammatory arthritis. We demonstrated that the recombinant adenovirus-expressing mouse (p40)(2) model prevented the development of arthritis when given before the onset of arthritis. It also decreased the arthritis index and joint erosions in the mouse model if transferred after arthritis was established. (p40)(2) inhibited the production of inflammatory cytokines and Ag-specific T cell proliferation. It also induced CD4(+)CD25(+)Foxp3 regulatory T (Treg) cells in vitro and in vivo, whereas the generation of retinoic acid receptor-related organ receptor gamma t and Th17 cells was suppressed. The induction of Treg cells and the suppression of Th17 cells were mediated via activated STAT5 and suppressed STAT3. Our data suggest that (p40)(2) suppressed inflammatory arthritis successfully.     Solution-based synthesis of anisotropic metal chalcogenide nanocrystals and their applications

    This article reviews recent advances in solution phase synthesis to generate 1-D and 2-D anisotropic metal chalcogenide (MC) nanostructures with a focus on using different growth mechanisms to control the shapes of the MCs. Four different synthetic approaches have been reviewed: naturally favoured growth due to its intrinsically anisotropic crystal structure, modified anisotropic growth by changing surface energies or utilizing organic templates, oriented attachment of small nanocrystal building blocks to form nanowires or nanosheets, and chemical transformation from existing nanostructures into new species. We discuss current understanding of the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects associated with the mechanisms of forming these anisotropic MC nanostructures. We provide examples of representative applications of anisotropic chalcogenide nanomaterials that are expected to be practically meaningful in the near future. The applications include electrodes for lithium ion batteries, photodetectors, thermoelectric devices, and solar cells. A brief review of other potential applications (oxygen reduction reaction, localized surface plasmon resonance, topological insulator, superconductor) is provided as well. This review ends with discussions on the challenges to be investigated thoroughly in the solution-based synthesis of anisotropic nanomaterials, which includes surface energy control, correcting the nucleation Er growth mechanism, removal of the organic surfactant, kinetic study on the chemical transformation, scale-up of production, and eco-friendly synthesis.open113331sciescopu
